Rating: Summary: A fabulous Grisham novel and one that gets you to thinking Review: The plot is moving and the reader does a great job of imitating voices and bringing emotion into the book.
Rating: Summary: ... GOOD ONE Review: This was my first John Grisham book... i read it like 2 yrs ago and just read it again... more than worth the read... dont have time to type more but i would if i could.
Rating: Summary: Not one of his best pieces Review: I think that this is not in John Grisham's set of finest pieces of art (such as Time to Kill or The runaway Jury) The story goes about a rich and wealthy lawyer from DC that suddenly changes his way of seeing things and leaves the warm office for helping out homeless... He could have done better....
Rating: Summary: Love the Street Lawyer Review: People go back and forth on this book the main argument is: John Grisham wrote a parable about a man who does good for the poor. If you want to read an inspirational, heart warming, a little preachy legal thriller, read this. If you don't want to, don't read this.
Rating: Summary: Probably Grisham's best Review: To me there's always something missing in a Grisham novel. He's not a particularly gifted writer, but he knows his genre. However, it was good to read a novel about a lawyer who grows a conscience.I think for anyone who has dealt directly with the homeless, this book will strike a chord. For those who ignore or deny the existence of social problems, it will merely be another thorn in the side.
Rating: Summary: ~!!Awesome, only one word to describe it, Awesome!!~ Review: This is not just another one of Grisham's novels, this is packed with stay up all night suspense and mystery that'll have you biting your fingernails. This is one of Grisham's best!
Rating: Summary: Good Writing, please save the politics. Review: If you are a big John Grisham fan, as I am, get ready to be disappointed. This book never really gets exciting. People who may like this book: Strong liberals who enjoy a famous writer using his book as a platform for more spending on social welfare programs; and second, People who live in DC may enjoy his details of the various areas of the city. If you're a Conservative Republican...STAY AWAY! You will be thoroughly annoyed by this book. Unfortunately I fall into this category and I give it a THUMBS DOWN! Read "Time to Kill" again.
Rating: Summary: must read Review: my thought of The Street Lawyer is that it is about how life is being a lawyer and what they do to solve things. it is also about how they solve cases and how they use the information. over all it was a great book to read!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: The Street Lawyer Review: Michael Brock is a successful attorney at Drake and Sweeny who has virtually assured himself a good retirement. At home his marriage to doctor is falling apart that divorce is imminent. One day a psychotic homeless man brandishing a gun takes hostage Michael and his associates in one of the firm's corporate offices. When the standoff ends the mans blood is splattered all over Michael and he is badly shaken up. He suddenly gains a conscience and bolts from his comfortable job to become an advocate for the homeless, a "Street Lawyer". However a secret file that he has uncovered and taken with him is costing people their lives and Michael is determined to uncover the truth no matter what the cost. All of the trademark elements that make Grisham a master storyteller are here: Shady lawyers corporate greed and a hero who must rise above it all. Grisham writes about the law so well he could do it in his sleep and this time it half feels like he did. The premise is good, but the end result isn't as satisfying as this critic would have liked. A so so offering from John Grisham.
Rating: Summary: The Life That Could Have Been Review: In The Street Lawyer by John Grisham, Michael Brock is living a life that should not have been lived. Grisham uses a foil to make the story better. He uses this foil to show how hard it is for Michael Brock to do what he is doing. Also Grisham cleverly mixes in a dramatic life changing event to show why Brock wants to live the way he is. John Grisham really strengthens his story by including these things in the book. Michael Brock comes across a very life touching moment in his daily duties at the Drake and Sweeny law firm. A homeless man smuggles himself into the office with revenge on his mind. He wants to avenge the death of some of his friends who died because of a Drake and Sweeny eviction case. The problem is the death really should not of happened because the eviction was wrongful and Brock knew that it was. This event drives Brock to see all the problems that take place in the bad parts of cities. Brock understands that working for a big firm is not going to help any of the people that really need it because they do not have the money to provide for the big firm lawyers. This situation is very important to this story because it provides a side story of Michael Brock's midlife struggles. This gives the story depth and gives the reader something else to think about while reading. John Grisham uses the foil between two lives that Brock can live to show the struggles he has in making his decisions. The first life, which Brock leaves, is that of status and prosperity. He is a big firm lawyer on the East Coast, about to be a partner and can go no where but up. But really this life has no fulfillment because he can not see his efforts making a difference. The other life that Brock can live has no prosperity or status. He can barely survive on the money he is making. But the one big difference is that he is making a difference in society. He works for free to help those who need a lawyer and can not afford one. This foil really improves the story because a reader can see that not everyone wants money and also that even if people are always one minded they can change to just the opposite in an instant. It can be seen that John Grisham's book is greatly strengthened by these literary devices. If these were not used the story would lack depth and really would not be an entertaining story. Also people can relate to these problems. Many times a person living a very steady life can expereience something one day and completely change his or her life.
