Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The Cay Review: The Cay By Theodore Taylor Random House (juv) The Cay is a wonderful book about survival with a blind kid and his black friend. The kid's name is Philip and he became blind by hitting his head on the floor in a torpedo blast. The torpedo came from a World War 2 German U-boat. The ship Philip was on sunk. He and the black man were cast away to The Cay. The Cay is a tropical island with many types of fruit a reef that is good for fishing and trees for shelter. They survive hunger, heat and tropical storms. It is set around World War 2 and it is a danger to travel by sea. The Cay is in the Caribbean in the mouth of a cove protected by whirlpools and sandbars, which is extremely hard to get into by boat. Will they ever get out? Philip is about 11 years old with blond hair. He is 5 foot and is mostly nice but sometimes gets mad when discussing about his disability. Philip was sailing to his home in America with his mother when the ship was torpedoed. The black man was a sailor and knew about survival. He is shabby with a beard and is about 60 years old but is very nice. This book changed my life in many ways. To think that the Germans would torpedo a commercial ship. Theodore Taylor's The Cay is a classic on my book shelf and I would recommend this book to all people who want a story about adventure, survival and true friends.

I just finished reading it to my two oldest children (10 and 8)- a couple chapters each night at bedtime. This is truly one of those magical books that just stays with you forever. Such a great story on so many levels. Read it to your children, read it yourself. Such a great story, and told so well! My two could easily describe the island - as if they were there. Just such a classic book! (and it still makes me cry!)
