Rating: Summary: Complete and utter propaganda and I loved every second of it Review: Ever since I read The Great Santini as freshman in high school, I have loved every book by Pat Conroy. Like many books he has written, Beach Music centered around the "beautiful, southern-bred women" and the "strong men". However, the personalities and wit of protagonist Jack McCall and his brothers made the book seem lighter despite the often morbid mood, and at times were down-right humorous. However, Beach Music, unlike The Great Santini, [it] was purely fiction that boardered on just plain propaganda. For all of it's faults, Beach Music, all 800 pages of it, was a great, heart-wrenching book.
Rating: Summary: Message to Mr. Conroy -- Please Write More! Review: Quite simply, the best book I have ever read. Never have I become so interested in or -- for lack of a better word -- so involved with the characters of a book as I did with those of Beach Music. When I finished this book, I felt as if I was saying 'goodbye' to people that I had grown up with. The many, intertwined stories of Beach Mucic are each so vivid that they stay with you for months and months after you finish reading. Please Mr. Conroy, write more!
Rating: Summary: Best book I had to read in highschool Review: When my teacher told our class that we would have to pick another book to read for an I.S.U, I groaned because most of the books we have to choose from are boring. I chose Beach Music because my friend had read it last year and I figured she could help me with it if I really needed help.Once I got past the first 50 pages I was hooked. I would read till 1 am some nights because I just couldn't put the book down. The author has weaved many character's stories into one main story.I laughed especially hard at the part when crazy John Hardin had the bridge held hostage at gunpoint and refused to give it up until his brothers jumped naked into the river. This book also contained haunting stories of 2 of the characters survival from the Holocaust. This part of the story was gruesome and scary, the most frightening part is that what happened to them in 1940's europe is not made up and actually occured to millions of people.I thouroughly enjoyed this book and it is the second best book I have had to read in highschool.Just in case you were wondering my favourite book was To Kill A Mockingbird
Rating: Summary: I don't get it? Review: I've failed to finish two books in my life. This is one of them. I loved Prince of Tides and The great Santini. I closed this mess after 300 pages of diologe. How could this book get 4 or 5 stars? I don't get it!
Rating: Summary: The best "Beach" book ever written Review: I took this book with me on a beach trip to Puerto Vallarta..........I couldn't put it down. Mr. Conroy is a true Renaissance Man, an artist with the written word. Rarely does one come to care so deeply for the characters in a book as I did with this one. This book demonstrates the way one person's life and actions affect many others. It is both spiritual and worldly at the same time. I found myself trying to come up with the perfect cast for the movie but just couldn't. In fact, I hope it's never made into a movie considering what Hollywood did to Prince of Tides!
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Books I've Ever Read!! Review: I was recommended this book by a friend and I must say I've been deeply touched. His characters are fantastic and witty and you begin to feel as though you yourself are a character in the novel. Conroy's details to geography are amazing. I just wish I could turn back time and re-read this book for the first time. I've recommended this book to everyone I know and have had fantastic feedback.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: This has become one of my favorite books of all time. Conroy's imagery and use of detail to enhance his storyline is exemplary. He expresses ideas and emotions very well. My favorite quote from the book expressess this idea. "I could feel the tears within me, undiscovered and untouched in their inland sea. Those tears haad been with me always." His explanation why couldn't cry for his wife's death was touching. I have also read Prince of Tides by Conroy, and though the plot have many similarities, I like Beach Music better of the two because it touches on so many more people and their stories. It bothered me aa little at first that there were so many similarites in plot and in characters, but then I became more intrigued because I felt as if I was reading about Conroy's own life, that he had drawn from his personal experiences. Whether this is true or not I don't know. The characters are extremely well developed, each with their own destictive personality, which is amazing considering the number of characters involved. I really liked the plot of the book bacause he delt with so many issues and tied them together so well. He reaches out and pulls amazing stories from his characters, and does it without seeming fake. I wouldn't say this book is for everyone. I wouldn't recommend Beach Musi to people who like extremely fast paced books and don't have the patience for character development. I also would not recommend it to people who would have a hard time dealing with the issues he brings up like suicide, rape, mental instability and the Holocaust. However, I think Conroy's book has great value.
Rating: Summary: DREW ME IN FROM PAGE ONE. Review: I NEVER READ THE PROLOGUE TO BOOKS BUT I DECIDED TO READ THIS ONE AND I AM GLAD THAT I DID. IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST ROMANTIC YET SAD BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ. HE HAS A GREAT WAY WITH WORDS AND CAN DESCRIBE THE WARMTH OF SUMMER YOU CAN STILL FEEL ON THE COLDEST WINTER DAY. I COULD SMELL THE OCEAN AND HEAR THE RADIO DURING THE HOUSE PARTY! I HAVE READ ALL BOOKS BY PAT CONROY AND THIS IS DEFINATELY THE BEST. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF HE PUBLISHES ANYMORE SO THAT I MAY READ THEM TOO!!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing after great anticipation Review: Pat Conroy is a wordsmith who is unequalled in contemporary fiction; however, I found this book did not live up to my expectations. If any other author had written it, it would have merited 5 stars. Everyone should treat himself to a Conroy book regularly. He is a master at evoking tears and laughter all in one sitting. My only regret as a Pat Conroy fan is that he is not more prolific - but if he were, I guess his name would be Grisham or Steele (shudder).
Rating: Summary: bad Review: This is absolutely the worst book I have ever finished. Those of you that like this book must never get out of the house.
