Summary: Awesome!
Review: I could not put this book down. I read it in one sitting it was so amazing, then I reread it becuase I was afraid I missed something I read it so fast! This book not only talked about coaching but about life and philosphy. I though Coach Phil was just a talented Coach with many rings, but this books explains why he wins so much! It makes you feel like you know him and it's just an amazing read, I've recommended it to friends who don't like basketball and they loved it! I recommend to everyone!

Summary: Sacred Hoops is in the "Inspirational" section of my library
Review: I don't recall having read a book quicker in my life. For some reason I had Sacred Hoops with me when I entered hospital for a minor heart ailment and it was certainly a good tonic to take. I am a rugby union coach and I was pleased to read of aspects that I have as part of my style. It was interesting to see that multi-millionaire sportspeople have the same idiosyncracies, desires, and motivations as totally amateur rugby players. Humans are so similar. If coaches of all sports could read this book and adopt the philosophies then athletes would be able to develop their full potential and enjoy their sport here and now. It would be nice if administrators could learn from Sacred Hoops but greed is difficult to overcome. If this book can encourage one young athlete to compete with a selfless spirit then life will be that little bit better. Thank you, Phil, for the book, for the teams, and for the compassion.

Summary: Autobiography, Chicago Bulls History 1987-96 and Philosophy
Review: I enjoyed reading Phil Jackson's "Sacred Hoops". It was a breezy read, just over 200 pages and a nice mix of personal history, Bulls history and philosophy.

There isn't much philosophy in the book, though I suppose those ideas are always a part of the context, but Jackson's focus on the power of the mind, clearing the mind, calming the mind, being present in the moment (that is the big one) and then his ideas of teamwork, working together, selflessness for the sake of the team are, in my opinion, very solid.

Alot of the book is the history of the Chicago Bulls from the time Jackson joined the team as an assistant in 1987 through to their 4th championship in 1996. This was one of the great teams in the history of basketball and Jackson took a team that was a one man show, Michael Jordan, a good but not a championship team, and made them 5 or 6, I am not sure, time champions. After reading this book, I am not sure that the Bulls ever would have won a championship without Phil Jackson as coach.

Be in the moment, be present to what you are doing, live the journey, respect others, find peace and "If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball".

Summary: Sacred Hoops was amusingly entertaining and inspirational.
Review: I found Sacred Hoops to be inspirational. Jackson conveys his philosophy well. There were not too many technical terms, and it was a fast read. The ideas Jackson has about how to create a real team, and the personal stories of his life and career illustrating his points, were amusing as well as thought provoking. Aplicable to daily life, as well as any team sport.

Summary: Great coach doesn't win this time
Review: I love Phil Jackson and I was eager to read this book. I wanted to learn more about the Zen that inspires his coaching and philosophy. But you get little of that in the book. You do get some nice anecdotes about the Bulls championship runs, and you get a few ruminations on leadership. But there's little depth here at all. If Jackson has profound thoughts on life and coaching, he isn't able to get them across in this book.

Summary: I love this book
Review: I loved this book by Phil Jackson. I picked it up for a reading project thinking I would not enjoy it, only read half of it, then do the project. But it was just the opposite, I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed learning how Phil got to be such a good coach. I loved the spirtual lessons that Phil teaches and how he incorporated Native American believes in his lessons to help his team work and play as a team. I recommend this book to players, coaches, and anyone that wants to enjoy a really good book.

Summary: A new way to understand team spirit
Review: I picked up this book in an airport bookstore only because I love basketball and I have been a Michael Jordan fan since he was in high school. I LOVED it. Sacred Hoops helped me really understand and appreciate why the Bull's, and other teams that build on a similar philosophy, have a special magic. It also helped me see how this philosophy can be used to improve and enhance any endeavor that requires teamwork. I will be reading this book again to be reinspired. I loaned the book to my 75-year old mother. She bought additional copies to give to friends and bought it for the local library. Then she lent it to my 15-year old niece, who plays high school hoops. My niece commented that her coach must have read the book half-way through last season because he suddenly changed his coaching style to be similar to Jackson's. My niece passed it on to her mother, a mother of 4 with a black belt in karate. Her mother immediately went out and bought two books Jackson recommends, commenting that she imagined anything he recommended would be worth reading. When the book returned to me, my husband (who is, no kidding, a rocket scientist) decided to read it to see what all the fuss was about. He has now passed it on to an Italian colleague who says, wow this is good. Never have a seen such a wide range of people, in interests and ages, respond so strongly and positively to a book. This is a book that can enhance your life, no matter what you do

Summary: I truely think this book is a worthwhile experience.
Review: I truely think this book is a worthwhile experience. The book teaches you to play (basketball) with all your heart and soul. It really gives a person reading the book gets into the book and maybe it will change your way of living.

Summary: Very Mediocre Book
Review: If I was looking for a book on Meditating, Zen, etc...I would have simply bought a book on those items. Being a North Dakota native I would much rather read a book on Roger Maris anyday.
It wasn't a terrible book, but it wasnt great either. The only thing that kept me interested was how MJ and Scottie took to Phil's different philosophies. I haven' read any of his other books, but maybe they are a little better. I would highly recommend reading Rick Majerus' "Like on a Napkin" over this "overhyped" book. I guess if you are into "spiritual" type stuff you may enjoy the book. Phil has definetly been pretty darn succesful so I guess he's doing something right!!
