Summary: I loved this book!
Review: Michael Chabon is one of the best writers at work today and this book can illustrate just why. The book follows the adventures of two cartoonists during the golden age of comics. Kavalier and Clay, out of their common experiences, create a superhero called "The Escapist" who represents their longings, Kavalier to escape the burden of being a surviver of the Nazi campaign against the Jews and Clay's attempt to come to terms with his homosexuality. It is only when they put this character finally to rest that the characters come to terms with these issues. In telling this story, Chabon combines elements of folklore, mythology and pop culture. I think this work is one of the best works of fiction written in the last 20 years and look forward to reading all future books by Chabon.

Summary: Excellent structure, emotional characters. I loved this bk!
Review: Michael Chabon brilliantly ties together several different experiences around forms of escape, both physical and emotional. The characters have incredible depth and you can see and feel them change throughout the book. I read extensively and admit that this is one of the top 3 best books I've read in the past 5 years!

Summary: One of the best I've read in a while.
Review: It's a great book. Enough said.

Summary: Amazing
Review: I was dazzled and totally engrossed in this tale of the golden era of comic books. I love Chabon's style of writing and the deep character developement of Joseph Kavalier and Sam Clay. It is an extraordinary tale of survival of life during the time of World War II, and the extreme hardships one immigrant has to endure. Chabon writes in elegant, fluid details of the trivialities that occurs in the comic book business and its creators. This definetly is Pulitzer worthy.

Summary: 5 stars is not enough, this book goes to ELEVEN !!!!!!!!!!
Review: READ THIS BOOK. It is a beautiful piece of literature. My only regret with this book is that I didn't read when someone first recommended it. Other than that I have no complaints.

Summary: Chabon crafts another masterpiece.
Review: Even though I read and adored THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, which was Michael Chabon's debut novel, I was not at all prepared for the scope of this work of his, which deservedly won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

It's an epic story about growing up Jewish in WWII-era New York. It's about the history of comic books, the way humans find means to escape the traps (both figurative and literal) in their lives.

The character Joe Kavalier, a master escape artist and master comic artist, is one of the most fully-developed characters I've ever read. The odd romantic triangle that he, his cousin Sam Clay and their muse Rosa Saks find themselves in the middle of is original and charming.

This is a great read.

Summary: I was so blown away by this book that my brain hurts!
Review: Michael Chabon has really achieved something special with this towering work of literary genius. I was unfamiliar with Mr. Chabon before reading this and realize that I was missing out on something very special. Filled with some of the most beautiful prose I have ever encountered; I cannot count the times I had to reread sentences. Not because they were difficult to understand, but because their depth of artistry was so intense that I had to re-experience them over and over again. The story is amazing. The characters are amazing. It is a truly amazing adventure.

Summary: Starts great, ends weakly
Review: Some truly clever and original characters, and the first half of the book is a real joy, but it doesn't sustain, and then end drags on and the characters lose their depth.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: muddles in the middle, otherwise great
Review: This book starts off just... excellent. I was immediately absorbed and couldn't put it down.

Then there is the middle section, where the cousins split apart, and they pretty much don't interact anymore. The novel thus loses steam.

Towards the end it picks up the pace, though.

A fun ride. Highly recommended.

Summary: A Perfect Book
Review: I'd just like to say that I LOVED this book. I could not put it down while I was reading, and it instantly became my favorite book. It will stay with you so long after you read it. I still can't stop thinking about it. This is an example of what happens when an author does everything right. This book is absolutly pefect.
