Rating: Summary: Can't even add the parts together Review: Some books are more than the sum of their parts. These would be literature, books that resonate in the head long after they are put down, books full of people and ideas and emotion. Some books equal the sum of their parts. These would be skillfully done fiction. Pleasant, worthy of the time invested, but not "for the ages" or even for more than right now. Then there are books such as this one. It is way less than the sum of its parts, and trust me, even that ain't much. Best forgotten, though remembering them would be the more difficult task. While there are some amusing pieces in here, they are scattered like oases in the vast desert. It is incredibly lame, predictable, and dull. The characters would have to expand to be one-dimensional, and there are too many of them to even make much of an impression. It begins to feel like the Keystone Kops after a while, one zany, wild and spectacularly unamusing event after another. Improbable coincidences and silly plot twists heap up like ants on a grasshopper carcass. Thankfully the book is very brief. Though there are over 300 pages, those pages look like many twenty-page college term papers, with wide margins, broad line-spacing, and large type. I have been reading Dave Barry since he began writing back in Pittsburgh. I've read millions of his columns. The man is funny. But a funny man does not necessarily equal a funny novel. This is not funny. Not well-plotted. Not suspenseful. Not clever. Not witty. Not sparkling. Not interesting. Not amusing. Not fun. Not surprising. Not well-written. Not worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Pure Fun Review: Zaney book written by Barry. So many character interacting in unreal situations that this book is just fun. It's for when your on vacation on the beach, wanting to get away from reality. Barry reminds me of Tom Robbins style of writting.
Rating: Summary: One word: WACKY Review: If I had to choose one word to sum up this book, it would be WACKY. This book is GREAT!I seldom can go through a book with a smile on the whole time, this book is just crazy. The plot is exposed later in the book, I don't want to be a spoiler, but it is definently worth the wait. The story itself can be frightening (you'll catch yourself wanting to strangle one of the characters, but Snake will get what he deserves...) but Dave turns a senario that would make blood curdle in "real life" into one that can make a person pass out with laughter. Do I reccomend? Absolutly. If you only read one book for the rest of your life, read "The Green Beret's Wilderness Survival Guide", but it SHOULD be "Big Trouble".
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Wonderful Review: Very funny book - especially if you have lived in Miami as a lot of his snide comments become more meaningful.
Rating: Summary: Much better than the movie Review: This book slayed me. I've been a fan of Dave Barry's writing for a long time, but was skeptical when he released a mystery. But, being the sucker that I am, I bought it when it came out. I started reading it late that evening, planning on going to sleep after a dozen or so pages. I ended up finishing the sucker. My wife kicked me out of the room because I couldn't keep myself from laughing out loud. His fiction style is much like his columns: a continual stream of consciousness, with characters, situations, and references all plausibly coming from left field. A great sequence in this book describes an interaction between a dog and a giant frog. Dave Barry obviously has spent much time watching his pooches; he captures the essence of dog perfectly, from the dog's point of view. Don't let the recent movie fool you. This is a great book, and somewhat prescient about nuclear proliferation and domestic terrorism.
Rating: Summary: You will be taken for mad, if you read this book in Public Review: It is impossible to read this book without laughing aloud. I am what they call "Salary Man" in Japan (read Desk Jockey). Hence it was very easy to identify with the Hero. The book is spontaneous and the links between the characters including the goat and the narration is just amazing. One can trade well earned dollars for this "make you feel good" book
Rating: Summary: BIG LAUGHS Review: You will laugh out loud. Funnier than Hiaasen.Almost as good as Dorsey. You actually will laugh out loud like he warns. It is of interest that he says he didn't think of a plot until the book was half way written and until he starts to develop a plot(page 215) the story is outrageously funny. The last 100 pages are not very funny or good but the first 215 are fantastic. Next time, he should forget about plot and just do characters and situations.
Rating: Summary: So funny it grabs you. Review: I confess that I picked this book up after seeing the movie. The reason I bought the book though, is that it's the first movie I'd seen from a book that was entertaining and flowed well. The book though, like most books that become movies, is much better than the movie. It's amazing to think that this is the author's first book. The book is funny and the plot grabs you and pulls you through. Name one other book where you can find bar owning, weapon dealing, ex-soviet army goons; a strange and corrupt businessman who seems to lack moral values; and a jolly tree dwelling bum whose one talent is lifting heavy things. I started the book on Friday and finished it on Sunday. I actually can't remember putting it down save the time I used for eating, sleeping, and getting air. This book is a great buy for anyone, though it might not be recommended for younger readers because of the language used. Dave Barry hit right on target with this one.
Rating: Summary: Wild, crazy funny Dave Review: LOL and LOL some more. Dave at his absurd best in a novel form!! Catch the movie if you can. And it's cheap now!!
Rating: Summary: Pretty Damn Funny Review: I stumbled upon this book in a clearance section... I am a bit obsessive. I took it with me on vacation and couldn't stop laughing, I am anxious to see the movie. I never found his newspaper columns nearly this funny.
