Rating: Summary: What a hilarious and wonderful first fiction effort! Review: I was so pleased and amazed when I began reading "Big Trouble"--I could NOT put it down! I have been a fan of Dave Barry's for many years, but I never thought that he could shine as a fiction author--how wrong I was! Thanks to a number of favorable reviews, particularly at Amazon, I ordered it in hardcover (which is something I never do). And I'm SO glad I did. His characterizations are very well done and the pace is excellent also. Now I am eagerly awaiting his next work--keep it up, Dave!
Rating: Summary: Avoid this book Review: I should have heeded his warning to minors before attempting to read this dreadful waste of paper. Characters and setting are foul. His weekly columns *are* funny and seem to be written by a different person altogether. Read John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces if you seek genuine adult humor.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: Dave Barry was born near Leipzig in 1944, the son of a Lutheran clergyman. He attented the famous Pforta School, where he studied kingology and read Schopenhauer. He wrote a lot of good books. Dude... My Bad. He is alive and well and writes really cool articles for the Miami Herald.
Rating: Summary: a disapointment!!!!! Review: An Elmore Leonard fan, read every book...some purchsed from Amazon, Bought this Stinker based on Leonard's recommandation.. How can he do this? King also praised the humor (can't find any). Because there is no humor, story or plot. It's a totally worthless effort.
Rating: Summary: A easy, fun book Review: If I had read this book without knowing who the author was, I'd guess Dave Barry. The humor style is exactly the same as his non-fiction books. The characters you're supposed to like, you like. If you're supposed to hate them, that's exactly what happens. The 'good guy' characters are very similar to the short story in his Guide to Computers book. The only problem is the 'wackiness for wackiness sake' action (the python, the handcuffed police officer). The humor makes you forget that, however. A fine book, and a good job by Dave Barry.
Rating: Summary: Good - and I'm sure better is coming Review: The truly interesting characters in this book are Roger the dog and the Toad. But there were some funny happenings and it was a quick read. I'm hoping for some more well-rounded characters in the next one.
Rating: Summary: Fun and entertaining Review: I thought this was a very enjoyable book. The plot is very Hiaasen, the humor very Barry. The plot was possibly a little too much for the lightheartedness of the book; it made the "dangerous" plot turns a little hard to take seriously. But, books like this shouldn't really be taken too seriously. Recommended for anyone who likes Dave and/or Carl Hiaasen. Or who has issues with Miami.
Rating: Summary: Great plot - glad he figured that out Review: A quick fun romp through Miami's craziness, a la Hiassen. This book never drags. The plot has more twist and turns than the snake that causes a major disturbance at the Delta ticket counter in MIA. If you want to be entertained with a cast of unusual characters, put this on your must read list!
Rating: Summary: So funny I read it all in one sitting. Review: I received this book at noon and didn't go to bed until I finished reading it. It grabbed my interest on the first page and didn't turn loose until the very end. And it was fun funny. I'll buy every novel the man writes.
Rating: Summary: Hurray for Dave Barry!! Keep them coming. Review: Mr. Barry's first attempt at the funny, mystery novel was an absolute success. From the first line, his "charaters" were alive and so funny that I could not stop laughing. He tells us he has no plot but develops a convoluted one that weaves all his characters together and the reader, too. Thank you Mr. Barry!! Write another one soon.
