Rating: Summary: Amatuerish Review: Early in this book Barry coins the phrase "megaturd" to describe those multi-part social-ill stories that newspapers are always doing, but I thought the word more aptly described this book. The long form does not appear to be Barry's strength--nor does plotting, characterization, pacing, or pretty much anything else besides trying to be funny. And to the reviewer who said we should cut Barry some slack because it's his first novel: regardless of how many novels an author's written, for 24 bucks, it'd better be good. This one ain't, folks.
Rating: Summary: Barry makes excellent transition from Journalism to Fiction Review: For all D.B. fans, this book packs as much laughs as any other work he's produced. For any reader, the story has a well-developed plot and exciting characters. If I didn't have to go to school, I would have finished the book in less than a day.Great Work Dave, I'm looking forward to many more novels !!!
Rating: Summary: For what it is, it's perfection. Review: This is exquisite. It's far better than his weekly columns. No one is pretending this is Dickens. This is fun fiction. And Barry knows how to do it. Every chapter made me laugh out loud. Repeatedly. I hope he will write novels as prolifically as his oft-times jam session partner, Mr. S. King!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book great for any Adult who wants to laugh. Review: A excellent, wonderful, humorous tale about the city of Miami. I will say first though even though this book is great, I highly recomend that you do not let children under 13 read this book. This is because of launguge and adult content. Anyway if you have read Dave Barry before you will LOVE Big Trouble. Barry fills his first novel with page turning content, nonstop humor and romance. So if your in the mood for a great funny page turner read Big Trouble. One more warning GET READY TO LAUGH!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: This is definitely better than anything Shakespeare wrote. Review: I know I'm asking for trouble by making the above statement, but I never in my life have been able to sit down and read a Shakespeare play from beginning to end or, at the same time, enjoy it. I just finished "Big Trouble" in about 2 1/2 hours, and enjoyed every second of it. I gave it 5 Stars because I never put it down. I'm not sure how to say this tactfully, but I'll do the best I can. I've read several of the reviews of this book, and I've noticed that they are all either 5 Stars or 0 Stars, meaning you either hate it or love it. I've also noticed that whichever end of the spectrum the critic was on, they got EXTREME about their views. All of these people need to settle down. From the guy who told Dave Barry not to quit his day job (his writing job? the one that got him the Pulitzer Prize?) to the lady who said not to drink milk while reading this book because you'll laugh so hard you'll squirt it from your nose. This book is not at all bad, nor will it make you feel complete because of the masterpiece you just read. It's simply a great book, based on the fact that I read it in one sitting and really like it. I've read several books like this, including all of the "Chronicles of Narnia," anything by Terry Brooks, and "The Fountainhead," so nobody can say I haven't read anything with substance, because "The Fountainhead" is nothing but substance. All I know is that I enjoyed "Big Trouble," and that, to me, is what books are supposed to do. Anyway, I hesitate in doing anything that will cause me to shoot anything from my nose - this is from experience. The one negative thing I can say about this book is that Dave Barry's humor perhaps doesn't always fit. Then again, I read Dave Barry for his humor, so it's not THAT big a deal. And one last explanation of my comparison of Dave Barry to Shakespeare. I didn't mean I don't like Shakespeare - if you get past the language, pretty much all of his work is great - so try not to dwell on that if you are. Feel free to email me and ask me what I mean, but I'm just going to end up telling you to read the book and leave me alone.
Rating: Summary: He set another milestone, and no underpants were involved. Review: I have always been a huge Dave Barry fan. This book is different, and fun, and hilarious. If you love Dave and his work, this is a must-read. It is, without a doubt his best (and only) fiction to date, and I look forward to many more from him in the future. The best testament is in the liner notes, where he gets "laughed myself out of my chair" and "funniest book I have read" comments from such heartfelt, sensative writers as STEPHEN KING AND RIDLEY SCOTT. As Dave would say, "These guys spend their day thinking of weird ways to murder people." It is a fantastic book. Kudos, Dave ! By the way, if you take the Roller Barbie and some kerosene, across the teeth of the alligator on the cover, it makes a really nice..... BOOM!
Rating: Summary: Recommended for those who enjoy FL wackos and a good laugh Review: This book is very funny and very easy to read and also really short. Mr. Barry handles the South Florida wacko genre effortlessly, which is understandable because he is one (although he is obviously not a criminal). The book reads very much like one of his columns. This is not a deep social commentary, but it by no means tries to come off as one. The book is a great way to have about 4 or 5 hours of mindless fun. I highly recommend it to people who like books by Carl Hiassen. BTW, anyone who likes this book and hasn't read Tourist Season by Carl Hiassen should definitely do so.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down. Review: Great and fun read. Characters were more than just interesting. Found myself laughing all the way through.
Rating: Summary: Reads like a good movie Review: For those of you out there who enjoy a nice lazy read, the kind where you can watch a football game or sit on a blazing beach and still find yourself immersed in an immensely enjoyable book, this is the book for you. Dave Barry the novelist is every bit as talented as he was in the newspapers. You cant lose here. Buy this book now and then pass it on to your friends...they'll thank you. When is the movie? This thing could be a blockbuster film.
Rating: Summary: Big Trouble a big disappointment Review: Take out the obsessive/excessive use of foul language and a bunch of the characters (they all seem pretty much alike anyway) and Big Trouble might have made a fairly good short story. Barry could clean up the funny passages, like the traffic jam on Le Jeune Road, or interaction between the dog and the toad as material for his columns, which I always enjoy. I think the book is good material for a "super-book-crushing" garbage disposal. Please keep me anonymous, I'm embarassed I read it.
