Rating: Summary: Beyond Funny! Review: This is by far the funniest book I have ever read. One should be warned, however, about reading it in a public setting (i.e on an airplane) as the snorting and guffawing with laughter that will burst forth from you despite your best efforts will no doubt result in strange looks from those not similarly occupied. Living in south Florida, I can attest to Barry's description of the cretins and other assorted fools and seemingly unbelievable events as fortunately all too true. I have read both Leonard and Hiaasen and feel while they are enjoyable in their own right, they cannot hold a candle to this screamingly funny novel. I highly reccommend it to anyone with a sense of humor.
Rating: Summary: ain't nothing there Review: I guess if you enjoy Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard and/or Kinky Friedman you'll enjoy this garbage as well.I personally don't find any of the above authors creative or funny. In fact I find them to be just rude and crude. Amateurs. Also, I posted a one star review of this book (& a few others) that never made it to your screen....hmmm...Seems Amazon is reviewing our reviews and yanking the negative one stars, leaving mostly 2-5 stars for your viewing. Rotten pool.
Rating: Summary: Dave strikes again---this time with a nuclear bomb... Review: The only thing I don't like about a book like this is that I finished it so fast, I can hardly remember anything about it. I guess that means I'll just have to <sigh> read it again! I have never been to Florida, but after reading "Big Trouble" I think that maybe that is a good thing. Dave Barry has a wonderful way of turning an otherwise dark or depressing or downright scary situation (like a nuclear bomb in the hands of a total idiot) into the funniest thing you've ever read. Well done, Dave!
Rating: Summary: Reasonably Good Hiaasen Lite Review: As soon as Dave Barry finishes reading the collected works of Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard he will be able to do a better job of emulating them. Dave shouldn't take offense at this comment as whom does he have endorsing his book? Why none other than Hiaasen and Leonard. This is a story that takes place over a period of about two days, and is both frenetic and fun. While most of the characters are strictly out of the Hiaasen Casting Agency, they are enjoyable. Essentially a few decent people get entangled with Russian arms dealers, incompetent robbers, nasty FBI agents, the local police, and, most evil of all, the Miami International Airport. What is that ominous weapon in the suitcase? Will the goats in the street block our heroes' way to the airport? Will the python at the airline ticket counter manage to squish one of the hit men? How many bribes does it take to get a seat on a plane at the Miami airport? Read the book and find out. On every page I half expected to read the words "I am not making this up", but they never appeared. Most of the time you actually feel you are reading a novel, and not an extended newspaper column, although Barry yields to temptation at least once when he gives his views of elderly cruise ship addicts. All in all not bad for a first effort.
Rating: Summary: Most hilarious since No Time for Sergeants Review: Are you old enough to remember laughing out loud at No Time for Sergeants? That was 45 years ago and Dave Barry's first novel may be funnier. The books starts with hilarious Acknowledgements -- and gets funnier. I envy anyone who is about to read it for the first time. But MY copy is autographed and I bought copies for my sisters as Christmas presents. A sequel? THERE'D BETTER BE! After all, I'm only a couple hours of drive time from him! <G> Seriously, I can't wait for the next one, and the next one, and the... --Terry Miller (media@naples.net)
Rating: Summary: A true Barry novel Review: "Big Trouble" is the exactly the type of novel you'd expect Dave Barry to write. You can take that however you like. I loved the book. While it was a little heavy on the language, I love the little warning at the beginning. And while the book is hysterical, you get some suspense and even a little window into the author's life. Ugly fish- good beer.
Rating: Summary: Moderatly funny, but not as funny as author's columns Review: Book makes for quick reading, but ending was a bit abrupt . . . and overall, it left me looking forward to author's next book of columns . . . i'm not so sure I would bother reading another of his novels.
Rating: Summary: Big Trouble = Big Fun Review: Dave Barry is one of the few writers that could make me request a hard cover fiction novel for Christmas. Big Trouble is one of the funniest books I have read.in a long time. It is nice that Barry didn't leave his sense of humor at the door when he entered the fiction world. The warnings about the language are appropriate. Barry also gives such warnings. I would advise customers to wait for the paperback because this is a great beach book. But if you are like me and can't wait, go ahead and spend the money for this book
Rating: Summary: A great fiction novel with one flaw..... Review: Big Trouble is written in the style of a good Elmore Leonard book. It has a variety of charecters that all mesh into one giant story eventually. It's a funny book (you will laugh out loud), so it definitely has "Dave Barry" written all over it. However..... Here's where I was dissapointed. The last chapter of the book seems rushed. I enjoy a complete ending, this one seemed to try to wrap up everything in the whole book in a few pages. I won't give anything away, but I feel that the last chapter was not consitiant with the rest of the book. The author could of spent a few more pages during the fianle. All in all I think it's a worthwhile purchase, especially if you like a comical crime novel. I certainly hope that Mr. Barry writes fiction again.
Rating: Summary: Dave Barry is cool Review: This book is hysterical. It's well written, fun, and very, very apt. Dave Barry manages to capture Miami's true spirit in the heartwarming tunes issuing from every radio in the vicinity of a teenager. My friend thinks that the Fluids are now 'way out' and informed me that Blink182 is the band to listen to if you're cool like her. Just so everyone knows.
