Rating: Summary: I want your ..... pootie! Review: I agree the plot wasn't as funny as it could be but the characters were hilarious and the way he writed is funny too. I love the way he can give written word a tone as sarcastic as if they were said by Bart Simpson. Some of the jokes about Jerry Springer and Monica Lewinsky may prove to make the book dated in the future but all of the other jokes that were obvious or could easily be missed (a character curses and Barry says something like "they took a moment to think about this idea" with the 'idea' being the swear word.) Though it doesn't work perfectly Barry fans will love this book and see that he can write a story that is somewhat serious and funny.
Rating: Summary: A Scambled Plot Makes Fast Reading Review: Dave Barry enters the ranks of the South Florida crime writers, such as Hiaasen and Shames, who are more interested in generating laughs than laying down a straight plot. Teenagers, assassins, police, G-men, and goats combine to swiftly move along a plot filled with mistaken identities, nuclear bombs, and goats across the highway. Barry may pose no threat to the serious writer of crime fiction, but is a welcome addition to the world of comical capers involving hit men and other nefarious characters.
Rating: Summary: Big Trouble - A Little Disappointed Review: As a BIG Dave Barry fan, I was a little disappointed. The story had its moments but unfortunately not enough of them were as funny as his weekly syndicated pieces. I got some good laughs but the story just didn't hold together until the end.
Rating: Summary: Dave, take a few more days thinking up the next plot Review: Dave Barry is one of the funniest writers in the world. Just not in this book. The plot is so dumb that it brings down whatever humor there is.
Rating: Summary: Take a wild and zany trip with Dave Barry! Review: Lets start by saying that this book definitely doesn't qualify as "literature". If you are looking for something more refined, look elsewhere. But if you want a quick, fun, wild read you should pick this book up. The book reads a lot like one of Barry's columns, which isn't really a bad thing. The plot, while requiring suspension of disbelief, is interesting. And although the characters lack any real depth, they are also interesting, and funny. Expect rampaging goats, bumbling assassins; giant, dog tormenting toads, "killer" squirt guns, and much more. The only part that didn't work as well was the final scene at the airport which seemed kind of hurried. Overall, a very funny book that is a good way to spend an evening. Don't read it in public, however, or people may look at you funny when you fall over laughing.
Rating: Summary: Fun, Fun, Fun! Review: I love Dave Barry and found his first novel to be great fun. The second half had me on the edge of my seat with suspense and total funniness. I can't wait until Dave writes another novel. Please Dave, make it soon!
Rating: Summary: A Real Hoot Review: Big Trouble by Dave Barry is the funniest novel I've read all day
Rating: Summary: HILARIOUS AND FAST PACED Review: A great effort for Dave Barry's first attempt. I thought the second half of the book made it difficult to put down. A bit coincidental at points, but nevertheless, it kept me laughing. I hope top see another Dave Barry novel on the shelves soon.
Rating: Summary: Big Trouble = Big Fun Review: Take Southern Florida and mix in two teenagers playing "killer" with squirt guns, an entry-level kingpin, two kingpin wannabes, two hired assassins, a born loser, a Latina maid, a crafty toad and the world's dumbest dog and you have the cast of Dave Barry's rollicking "Big Trouble." Barry's cast collide in various violent and humorous ways that are consistently entertaining if not always entirely plausible, but the book is so fast-paced that the plausibility factor doesn't really matter. Overlook the monofilament-thin plot line and enjoy the weird tangle of situations and Barry's witty, sarcastic observations on the Miami scene. One warning: this book has a hard "R" rating--it's definitely not for kids.
Rating: Summary: Fun At a Fast & Furious Pace! Review: A quick read that holds your attention throughout, this book is hard to put down! Full of wit & witticisms that will keep you laughing out loud, this mystery provides some humorous insights into the seamy side of modern day Miami life. In particular, readers familiar with airports and airline travel will identify with many of the author's observations. The book is filled with a broad spectrum of interesting characters, including "Puggy", who reminds us that a life can have meaning at every social and intellectual level. Although the plot is somewhat predictable, it reaches a highly satisfying conclusion. It is funny, sharp and sweet with just enough tough action to temper that sweetness. I have not enjoyed a novel more in years and I highly recommend it.
