Summary: Big Spoof!
Review: Fast and funny, Dave Barry pokes fun in a very fun way! The backbone of what makes this book funny, I believe, is the descriptive talent Barry constantly displays. The book is filled to the brim with mayhem and bedlam, missed opportunities, and overly officious public servants. Miami Florida is the perfect setting for such nutty shenanigans. I found it to be a rollicking fun ride!

Summary: Trouble Can Be Funny, Especially In This Book
Review: I laughed a lot in Dave Barry's first attempt at fiction. While it is not his funniest work, it does have its moments of purely hilarious moments. Three chapters into the book, I still had absolutely no idea what the book was about, but Barry warns you about this in the introduction.

In its simplest form, Big Trouble is truly about remarkable coincidences. From the street wanderer Puggy to Roger the dog, you can't help but sit back and enjoy the crazy storyline, peppered with mystery, suspence, and even some romance.

Big Trouble is really easy reading, and you should be able to finish the book in one sitting. The humor is constant, and the underlying mystery will keep you on edge until the wacky climax. Throw in Dave Barry's talent and the South Florida setting, and you will easily enjoy this book.

Summary: A fun and witty romp
Review: I'd read some incredibly high praise of the humor in "Big Trouble," so I feared disappointment. That didn't happen. While isn't non-stop knee-slapping hilarity as the dust jacket would have you believe, it is, nevertheless, very funny. Or perhaps "amusing" would be a better description.

"Big Trouble" is a story of incredible coincidence. Even though you can usually see what's coming, Dave Barry uses your expectations to set up a terrific stream of wit in a story that fun from start to finish. If noting else, Roger the dog's battle with the Enemy Toad makes this a book worth reading.

Summary: Fun to read
Review: Dave Barry does not intend to be a classical novelist...all he wants is to write a good, funny, strange story...and that he did in a perfect way with Big Trouble...

When you start reading the novel...you will feel the twist and imagination in the mind of the writer...you can tell that he likes to put people in strange stiuations...and you are convinced of this thought all through the novel...You will be amazed at the speed of the developments...you will be caught a strange world ...and the pages get you deeper in madness as you turn them one by one...

Read it and have fun...Just don't expect a Shakespear...just Dave..and you will love the novel...

Summary: It's OK, but with one painful error all the way through
Review: Let me say, first, that I own all of Dave Barry's books, so it was only natural that I would purchase this. In fact, I was at the bookstore the day it came out, and they still had it in boxes in the back of the store.

My prejudice aside, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed by this book. It's Dave's first crack at fiction, and certainly better than I'll ever do, but I came away from it thinking, "That's it?" It was funny in places but overall, well, I probably won't read it a second time.

LET ME ADD: All the way through -- I mean, ALL the way through -- for some reason "of" is used in place of "have." As in, "would of" instead of "would have." This obviously comes from the pronounciation of the contraction "would've," which sounds like "would of" -- but with one difference -- it's wrong!

I find it hard to believe that Dave Barry would have made this error, and I'm blaming the typesetter. Still, I knock off half a star because of it.

Summary: Good old Dave (3 1/2stars)
Review: I think it's high time someone give this a fair review. Some hate, and most love it. But first I believe that one should sit back and take all things into consideration: If this was supposed to be a real, live, living breathing novel, it would get 0 stars, and a nasty review, but seeing as how Dave Barry is one of the funniest writers of all time, it isn't supposed to be serious. Not in content or the way it's written. I hope it's all an exaggeration, the way novelist write, always skipping back and forth between characters and whatnot.

The humor was a bit different, but it's still Dave at the bottom of it all. As a fellow reviewer already pointed out: Dave can't swear in his columns; so he merely saved it all up and dumped it here.

His columns, although, remain better. And I can't wait for his next book to come out. Big Trouble was praised by a good many more experienced novelists, Steven King among them. The way I see it, whoever doesn't like it and says it's stupid with no plot, try to write your own book and see what Steven King thinks about it.

Pretty good book. A fun, carefree read.

Summary: i loved it, i loved it, i loved it!
Review: From the time I read "Dave Barry in Cyberspace", he has been my favorite author. So naturally, when I heard about Big Trouble, I had to get it. When I saw it Christmas morning, I was thrilled and immediately sat down to read it. It DEFINETLY lived up to my expectations. It was the funniest book I have every read. While I took note of the language warning, I didn't really expect it to be a problem (even though I'm only 14), and while the language may offend people my age and older, it wasn't a problem for me.

I'd assume from the mixture of 4- and 5-star reviews and 1-star reviews that this is not the kind of book that appeals to everybody, and while I understand that this book may be a little bit too off-the-wall for some people, all I can say is--it appealed to me.

Summary: Can't Stop Laughing
Review: This is unquestionably one of the funniest things I've ever experienced anywhere. Roger vs the Toad, Walter and Arthur handcuffed to an entertainment unit, the airport, the Russian solvent drinkers--all hilarious and much superior to so-called "meaningful" novels. I usually hate fiction, but handcuff me to this entertainment unit any day!

Summary: Dissapointed in Dave
Review: How out of touch am I? I live in South Florida and enjoyed the delightful descriptions of familiar places. The way he writes up the Miami airport is not to be missed and the cruise ship passengers are great fun. His characters are a memorable hoot. However, Dave is too funny and too good to resort to unending crudity. His columns use vulgarity as a well honed device but the novel simply bludgeons us over the head with them. After a while it's just more of the same ad nauseum. The subject matter is crazy and it's a one-sitting read. Save yourself for his wonderful columns and spend your evening reading something else, perhaps his earlier books. As a previous reviewer said, "

I'm a big fan of David Barry. I read his columns and have read many of his books. But "Big Trouble" was a big let-down.

Summary: So South Florida
Review: I want to thank Dave Barry for writing this book. No, it is not an instant masterpiece, it is not a top-of-the line genre piece, and it is not even super saturated with hilarity the way his compact columns have to be. What this is is a helluva ride through South Florida with a guide who knows his locals, who deftly portrays the comedy where many of us see only tragedy. Dave Barry is witty, he's funny, and he knows how to make you laugh. He readily admits that this novel was never endowed a plot, but neither was South Florida. Just hop on and enjoy the ride. (Think Carl Hiassen with a little less social justice and a lot more humor)
