Rating: Summary: The funniest book I've read in ten years Review: All right, I need to confess I've been a big fan of Mr. Hiassen since way back when. Nobody does black comedy better. And, as a homesick Floridian living in a cold Northern city, this book was exactly what I needed to read while home with the flu.If you know Florida, you know it's the craziest state in the Union. Mr. Hiassen ought to be Florida's poet laureate-- his prose emulates the weirdness and electricity of the sunshine state. Prepare to be entertained by one very Sick Puppy.
Rating: Summary: A worthy new addition to the Hiassen Cannon Review: It was great to visit Skink, Jim Tile, et all. I missed them...Carl is a national treasure. I can think of no other author as consistantly entertaining. We've seen these types of characters before, but they are so much fun it doesn't matter. There is a Kafkaesque reality to these people...no matter how absurd things get you can't help but believe it could really happen.
Rating: Summary: His Best Yet Review: I loved this book and read it one sitting. It ranks up theree with Stormy Weather and Skin Tight (my two favorite Hiaasen works). Buy this book, you will not be disappointed......
Rating: Summary: Best Hiaasen Book Ever Review: I , as a Floridian, am a huge Hiaasen fan. I was quite disappointed by LUCKY YOU, it had none of that Hiassen flair I am used to. I bought SICK PUPPY the day it came out, and ended up staying up all night reading it for 6 hours straight. It is his best yet (even better than TOURIST SEASON and STORMY WEATHER, his best two if you ask me). It is great to have Skink and Jim Tile back, and I love ther charater of Twilly. This is a must have book for all Hiaasen fans. Allyou have to do now is buy his book on Disney and your collection is complete.........
Rating: Summary: Woof, woof Review: This, like all of Hiassen's books is one hilarious romp. And I've read the all! In "Sick Puppy" Hiassen introduces us too Willy Spree, who is like a Skink Jr. On a highway Spree sees a literbug and decides he will teach this literbug a lesson. The literbug is Palmer Stoat a corrupt lobbyist who is the middle of getting the Shearwater Island Resort throught the capitol. After a few hilarous pranks, Spree finds out about the resort and is determined to stop the resort and save the small island from the bulldozer. He ends up dognapping Stoat's dog, a lovable black lab named Boodle. If you own a Lab, or are owned by one, you will appreciate this book. Yes, the premise is absurd, delightfully so. If you are in the mood for an easy read - and a funny read - this is a nice little book to spend some time with. With it's usual "over the top" writing (we actually like this), you'll be in for a treat. Also, try THE BARK OF THE DOGWOOD (another dog-influenced book) for a great tough sometimes disturbing time!
Rating: Summary: A Funny Read Review: This by far is my favorite Hiaasen book! Its laugh out loud funny. The characters he creates are twisted and unimaginable but something about them is believable. Let's just say I'll never let a friend throw a cigarette out the window again!
Rating: Summary: So so Review: A short-tempered eco-terrorist wreaks havoc on the life of a selfish and conniving litterbug lobbyist, without realizing the danger he's inviting. In the midst of it all is a kidnapped labrador retriever and the lobbyist's wife. One can't help but notice the 'us vs. them' theme of the novel--politicians and developers are evil, extreme nature-hating sadists, while conservationists are beacons of intelligence and pathos. Even I, as a liberal, can see exagerrated stereotypes at use in the novel. Nevertheless, it's often fun to read and the story line is truly unique. The characters are colorful, although there are probably too many of them. Throw in Barbie dolls and a rhino and it starts to feel like a circus. Not highly recommended, but not bad either.
Rating: Summary: If I Were a Dog Review: Really good Hiaasen book. The second Rhino shoot is a riot to read, and I loved the way he wrote some parts of the book from the dogs point of view, it's not too often that we get to go inside the canine mind.
Highly recommend as entertaining read.
Rating: Summary: Too sick Review: I love Carl Hiaasen and have read all his books but Sick Puppy was not that great. The pacing of story was inconsistent and many of the characters unlikable. I was glad to see the former governor's life story developed further.
Rating: Summary: Just awful Review: This author is supposed to be a humorist, but there's not much funny here. The book is tedious and silly. Worse still, some may object to the caricatures in the book, where even criminal eco-terrorists are excused as long as they are acting for a good cause--like not littering on the highway. There's hardly a moment of doubt or criticism for this author. Corporations. Bad. Politicians. Evil. Development. Horrible. Only the noble lefty looney tunes are good--and that's even if they actually get other people killed. Homicide is apparently a positive left wing value. If you think Ralph Nader would be a good president, this is the book for you. Even then, you may have trouble with its simplistic plotting, cardboard caricature characters and 9th grade level prose style.
