Rating: Summary: Sick Puppy Review: Wow! you compare Carl to Dave Barry, I suppose Ann Landers and Madonna come off about the same! For those South Floridians (and Islanders of the Caribbean like me) Carl is like a voice from the fast disappering wilderness. His satirical insights to polititions, tree huggers, developer/ rapist, car hops, plastic surgeons, and litterbugs (I've left out the rest of humanity he praises and gouges) are fantastic. To bad Travis McGee is not around to give him a hand in protecting all we bystanders.
Rating: Summary: Skip the Audio Review: This book is actually pretty good. It holds your interest and gives you a clue about the way politicans really work. The problem I had with it was the narrator - Ed Asner. He mumbles and speaks in a monatone, enough to put you to sleep. He lowers his voice almost to a whisper. I had to rewind a few times to hear what he was saying. I usually listen on the way to and from work, and to constantly have to rewind the tape is distracting while driving. Because of Asner I would not recommed this book in audio. Try the printed copy instead. It would be a good read.
Rating: Summary: Sick Puppy Review: Sick Puppy is the usual mix of kinky villians , odd but well intentioned good guys, level headed women and bizarre supporting characters that we have come to expect and enjoy from this author. In Sick Puppy, the author introduces several new characters and brings back several familiar ones also. Could Twilly be the new Skink? This book is a very fast read and will take your mind off whatever miseries of the day you have endured. You will find yourself smiling for no other reason than the fact that you are enjoying this book. My only regret is that after I am finished reading the book I am left wanting more. Carl Hiaasen at his worst is better than many authors at their very best.
Rating: Summary: Scratching Florida's Surface Review: Wow! Hiassen is a man who understands this state and it's many predators. He tells the truth, the absolute truth, with such creativity, wild characters, and a fun story with a bang of an ending. I never expected to laugh so much while reading such a thorough and scathing tale that by all rights, should make me cry. Hiassen scratches Florida's thin and delicate skin and let's it bleed. All over the place. It was the quintessential read while on vacation in the keys, and even made the drive home up the turnpike a little spooky. My husband picked it up whenever I'd set it down, and we both finished in two days. Thanks, Carl. I'll be sharing this one and I'm looking forward to more.
Rating: Summary: Double Whammy and Skin Tight are still the best. Review: This book was Hiassen at his mediocre - better that Lucky You but not up to Skin Tight or Double Whammy. Usually, his books have several inspired moments, but this one had only one, the rhino rampage.
Rating: Summary: SICK PUPPY is a healthy dose of.... Review: Yeah, for sure Sick Puppy delvers laughs and perfectly delineated characters. Yah, for sure, you betcha! It's Fargo all the way, only transplanted east to the Little Apple, okay?I like Skink's new sidekick, Twilly, too, you bet! They sure make a great eco-hit team. Maybe they can get their own tape or DVD made of their exploits, kinda like them 911 tapes, you know? Yessirree, boy howdy, that'd be a kicker!
Rating: Summary: A great and Funny book Review: I have never laughed so hard from a book as I did with this one. Yeah at times the humor is a little sick but that is what makes this book so great!
Rating: Summary: This One's a Letdown Review: Sorry to disagree with so many other readers, but I thought Hiaasen ran out of gas on this one. This time out, the characters were less well-drawn and far less credible. Suspending disbelief required lots more effort than usual. Here's hoping the author returns to his original form next time out.
Rating: Summary: Carl Hiassen's best so far! Review: I have read and enjoyed many of Carl Hiassen's books but Sick Puppy tops them all for the maturity of writing and characterization he brings to his latest eco-adventure. His riffs on the thoughts and emotions of a dog on the loose had me howling. Carl Hiassen is one funny, albeit sick, Puppy!
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud Funny Review: Sick Puupy is a kick. It's a laugh out loud, really funny escapade. The author is no fan of politicians or land developers, and saves all the bad stuff for them(they deserved it!). Atypical hero and heroine. And, when was the last time you got inside the head of a Labrador and understood what he was thinking! I have really liked everything this author has written and this is no exception. A quick read, too.
