Rating: Summary: What goes around comes around Review: For the longest time conservatives have complained that the major media was biased and now Bernard Goldberg, a 28-year veteran of CBS and 6 time Emmy winner has written the definitive book on this very subject. Goldberg was born in the south Bronx, lived in a tenement, went to public schools, voted for McGovern and other Democratic candidates and certainly never voted for Ronald Reagan. With those credentials it is hard to paint him as a Right-wing zealot who bombs abortion clinics and wants to push welfare recipients such as the children and the elderly away from the bosom of government and into the streets to fend for themselves. But what really differentiates him from the other employees of CBS and the other major networks is his ability to see the truth without having it destroy his own self image. All of the examples of Left-wing bias that he talks about in this book are a function of groupthink and its mutually reinforcing value system. It's of a piece with the same psychological cluster thinking that led to the parable of "the Emperors New Clothes." Among the many examples of bias that Goldberg cites his posterboy is Dan Rather who, while he has been a trusted news anchor for his viewers for 30 years, seems incapable of distinguishing his own personal bias from the factual reality swirling around him on a daily basis. Bernie feels that Dan regards criticism of his worldview as an assault on all that is reasonable and fair, a hypocritical assault on civilized values, but only as Dan interprets those values. Goldberg points out that Dan, like the rest of the people who frequent his orbit at CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN, has a worldview that is filled with the empty sanctimony of the phrase Social Justice. What about just using the word "Justice"? Like so many others who view our constitution as racist and America's founding based on genocide and cultural destruction, 20th century Liberals like Dan Rather and the leadership at the major networks engage in the fallacy of inductive logic or reasoning from the specific to the general. Hence there are always kernels of truth to their worldview, the set of assumptions through which they view the world. I believe that while it's important to understand why Goldberg is able to view this conundrum clearly while others cannot, it's also important to understand how things got this way. (...) (...) This is an important book and will hopefully inspire more like it. (...) In the end I predict that Dan will give Bernie a big hug and thank him for his intervention. Ain't that America?
Rating: Summary: This Guy IS RIGHT ON TARGET! Review: The author is right on target with the media. Too many times the journalists have no idea what they are reporting, and therefore end up sending funny biased opinions spinning around the world. CNN, or better known to many as the Clinton News Network is one of the main culprits of this action of liberal bias. Don't be stupid and deny the presence of a media bias, it exists and this book proves it!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: The leftists who are coming in here to knock the book can't claim this is conservative propaganda. Goldberg is a liberal himself. It is just that he is a true journalist that believes in presenting both sides of the story....and fairly.
Rating: Summary: Bernie's Book Rings True Review: I noticed while growing up in Hawaii, that the camera and microphone where often thrust in the face of the most inarticulate "local boy". Later, I found myself in the SF Bay Area and noticed the media doing the same thing to African Americans in Hunters Point and Oakland. Mainstream media loves to scrutinize politicians, celebrities and others but freaks out when the same thing is done to them. Bernie Goldberg has does a good job in exposing the process of bias in the media business structure.
Rating: Summary: Re-stating the Obvious, "of course there's a liberal bias". Review: This guy is no conservative. He's never voted for a Republican, and isn't out there pushing a conservative bias. This book simply reports on the bias he does see. CBS News President Andrew Heyward once told him. "Look, Bernie, of course there's a liberal bias in the news. All the networks tilt left...If you repeat any of this, I'll deny it!". The message is not new, the "left-wing media bias" was proven long ago. But confirmation from an "honest liberal" insider makes it an important and satisfying book.
Rating: Summary: Stupid, biased marketing machine now has a spotlight on it Review: First, I virtually grew up in a television station, and have no great respect for the news media or their self-aggrandizing "personalities". NEWS is all about SALES of advertising, with more than a bit of personal bias thrown in when the owners/senior management have an axe to grind. Which seems to be frequently. Second, the attempt to label Goldberg as a troubled outsider who could never get along & be part of the media crowd is very predictable. Fortunately, his ethics and professionalism got in the way. Having listened to Goldberg in an interview, I am convinced that he is not conservative, but center of the road with a liberal slant. He is simply self-aware enough to realize that presenting his personal slant is simply not news, and that this is not the legitimate endeavor of his profession. My hat's off to him. I hope he makes enough to enjoy his retirement.
Rating: Summary: A wistle blower who won't be protected. Review: Great book. (...)The author would be considered a whistle blower if he wrote this book about the tobacco industry, the insurance industry or any other "60 Minutes" target that you could think of. The fact of the matter here is that he had the unmitigated gall to attack the attack dog. When that media attack dog bites back at Goldberg, it'll hurt. I don't envy his predicament, but I certainly admire his courage to speak bluntly and truthfully about the mainstream media's dirty little secret (although most people have been aware of the bias since before CBS rigged GM trucks to blow up on cue in order to expose their "weak" gas tanks). They will crucify him when they get a chance to. (...) Is it any wonder that the Major network "news" organizations are loosing viewers at an alarming rate? Is it any surprise to anyone that Brokaw made a slip of the tongue when during the last election he was lamenting the fact that "we are loosing the election" when discussing Gore (gosh, I wonder who he supported). I usually don't watch any of the Major network news organization (or CNN for that matter) unless I want to be entertained by watching people make fools of themselves. This book exposes the bias and the way that bias is brought into the news. He exposes the cunning, skillful and conniving manner in which they wheedle the bias into their news stories that they decide to broadcast. Do yourself a big favor and buy this book to understand how the networks and CNN try to manipulate what we, the viewing public, should be thinking about and what news we should be hearing. (...) They have lost the notion that their sole function as a reporter is to tell us what happened, nothing more, nothing less. Good work, Goldberg. This is a book I'm giving out as Christmas gifts. This is truly a gift that "keeps on giving" in that it gets the readers to think differently about the major news organizations and to watch the news with a cynical eye. By the way, it's much more entertaining to be cynical when watching Brokaw, Jennings and Rather et. al. They are really quite humorous when they are pompous. The more pompous they are, the funnier they become. (...)
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: Finally someone has the guts to stand up and tell the truth. This book is a must read, it shows how the so called mainstream media (ABC, CBS, CNN) is nothing more than a liberal propaganda machine. My family and I have eleminated CBS from our viewing selection because of the intentional censoring and distortion of the so called "evening news". Im very thankful after reading this book there are alternatives like the Fox News Channel that we still have the chance to hear the news, fair and ballanced. Thank you Mr. Goldberg for standing up for all Americans who want the return of honest/unbiassed journalism.
Rating: Summary: A wake-up call for a dead profession Review: Given the ravaging that is already taking place, it appears that the "news" industry will try to destroy Goldberg's reputation rather than engage in the kind of introspection this book invites. If you wonder how a profession can get itself in a position where used car salesmen have more credibility than the multi-millionaires who now dominate the "news" business, you must read this book. Goldberg is probably right in his view that the Dan Rathers of the world live in such an isolated bubble that they cannot relate to the real America. It is probably why the news programs of the elite media continue to decline in ratings and credibility. The new "Flat Earth Society" is revealed by a professional who will suffer the same fate as those who advocated a round world, condemnation by the protectors of the faithful liberal elite who couldn't recognize objectivity if it jumped up and bit them. It just has. This is a great book.
Rating: Summary: Eye-opening! Review: Wow... just what we all thought was true... is the news really the news? Who knows? Bernard Goldberg dives in and factually and matter of factly shows us how terribly they spin everything we see and hear! Scary! I loved this book, though now I may never be able to honestly watch the news again! Reader beware! But really, everyone should read this book just so you know what's out there!
