Rating: Summary: The master expositor does it again! Review: Along with Mark Dever, across the other side of the USA in Washington DC, John MacArthur is the no.1 bible expositor in the USA today. So it is not at all surprising that he has, as always, come up trumps - he shows again and again that if you are biblical you are always relevant! This book is yet another example of the master expositor at work. Christopher Catherwood, author of CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS AND ISLAMIC RAGE (Zondervan, 2003)
Rating: Summary: My new favorite book..... Review: First of all I bought this book on the recommendation of a sales person. I usually do this timidly but am I glad that I listened to her on that day. This book sucked me right in and left me thiniking. I am so often guilty of reading so fast that I only retain about 50% of the book, I'm glad to say that I have retained so much more. I read this book and would catch myself getting ahead of myself and I would go back and re-read what I just read in order to more fully process what I was reading. I learned a great deal about the apostles and I learned some new things about Jesus love. Which is always a bright spot in my day. I love to learn new things but I am always greatful to the Holy Spirit when something really special is pointed out by a writer. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is a wonderful addition to your reading list and to your library. I've already gotten this book for a friend for a Christmas present. It is just so wonderful. The writing style is easy and flowing and the writer seems to really have put a lot of himself in to understanding the apostles from all angles. He seems intimate with each of them and with some that is no easy task but you feel like he is telling you about his 13 closest friends; Jesus and the 12 "ordinary men". I feel much closer to the apostles and Christ by having read this book and by having taken the time to truly proces what is there.
Rating: Summary: Its ok to relate to these extraordinary men Review: Hello readers, I confess I do not read my Bible as faithfully as I am called to but I did take a break to listen to the audio version of this book. I also wish it was unabridged for its exceptional and well worth your time.I have long thought/believed I could not compare myself to any of the disciples as they were prayed over and selected by Jesus, but after seeing the humanity and extra-ordinary working of grace in the lives of these men I see things differently. I will be purchasing the longer hardcopy and going back to reread this exhilirating, deeply inspirational book. Macarthur takes great care in describing each disciple in order and his obvious love for them and their master is evident. In short, this book is extra-ordinary and was a joy to listen to.
Rating: Summary: Twelve Men of Dust? Review: How the Master shaped His disciples for greatness and what he wants to do with you? That is the question on the cover of Twelve Ordinary Men. John MacArthur answers the first part of the question and leaves the second for your own conclusion. He tells how the disciples were called and how Jesus taught them for the remainder of His earthly ministry. The twelve men who were later called by Jesus to be apostles were human beings born as sinners; Scripture well illustrates this point. These men remained sinners and full of human frailty. What makes this work different is how John MacArthur describes the men as individuals based on scripture and historic information. ( Josephus, Antiquities & War on the Jews are used as sources also Eusebius, Ecclesiastical history}. The author talks of the disciples' former occupations, their temper (James and John as the sons of thunder), and how they came to know Jesus as God and Savior. He brings the humanity out of the men chosen to start God's church.
Rating: Summary: Great refresher course on the lives of the apostles Review: I consider myself to be pretty well versed in the Bible and yet found this compilation of information fascinating and informative. As a matter of fact, I could not put this book down and read it in one day. I was reminded of how obscure some of the 12 were. This book was very inspiring and reiterates that God has only sinners and faulty people to choose from. But who he chooses, he transforms. I highly recommend you read this book.
Rating: Summary: Well done John! Review: I have read several John Macarthur books in the past and this one easily ranks as one of his best. After a rather dry introduction, the book devotes a chapter to each apostle (with some lesser known apostles sharing chapters). I thought the book was very educational. It allowed me to see that perhaps we are no different from the apostles, both in our success and our failings. God uses the ordinary, the outcasts, so when they are successful, He gets the glory. The book also explains scripture very well, including (a) the strengths of each apostle; (b)their weakeness; (c)their personality type; and (d) their faith or lack thereof. One specific discussion I found very interesting was an explanation as to why Jesus sometimes calls Peter "Peter" and other times "Simon" depending upon the issues being discussed. A very good book and a departure from the faith v. works controversy Macarthur sometimes finds himself in.

Rating: Summary: Another excellent book by MacArthur Review: I have read several of MacArturs books and this one is no differenct from the others - it is outstanding in depth, scope, and true to the Sriptures.
I confess I am a MacArthur junkie and recommend this and his books to others that are interested in in-depth Bible study, research, etc.
Rating: Summary: Great biographical material Review: If you are looking for information about the individual disciples, this is as definitive as you'll find.
Rating: Summary: Great Study of the Disciples Review: MacArthur does it again. Great look at the apostles' lives. You will never look at "the 12" in the same light/
