Rating: Summary: Enthralling Masterpiece Review: Prodigious without being ponderous. Lucid without being parched. Candid without being vulgar. Ron Chernow sweeps gently back and forth across the long path of John D. Rockefeller's life, exposing it with eminently readable and literate prose. Not a mere collection of facts, this is a stunning narrative of historical significance. Worthy of a hardcover edition in your library so that your children's children can pull it down 100 years from now and read it along with the biography of William H. Gates, III.
Rating: Summary: RICH !!! Review: A rich story about a man who became the worlds richest person. I had been curious about the monopoly that was created by John D Rockefeller and was lucky to find a great book written about the subject. The history of John D. Rockefeller is fascinating and a must read for those interested in big buisiness and its beginnings. The story impressed me with the human side of this titan as well. I didn't realize all the good that this man did with his money. It is book that is truly worth the time spent on it.
Rating: Summary: this is not a bussines book Review: This is a grate book, the author took us inside the life of JDR, relay putting you in his shoes. Nonetheless of his size, this book helps to understand this fascinating man. And a lot of American history
Rating: Summary: If you love philanthropists, this is the book for you!! Review: When John D. Rockefeller was a young immigrant, he never knew he would be a successful oil tycoon. To start with, John D. Rockefeller had Alopecia Areata, a not too uncommon disease. He loved people. He never did anything he thought his customers would not like. He didn't work for himself, but for his people. In his 98-year life, he had three children. None of his children went into the oil business after him, not because they didn't respect their father's work, but because they did not want to screw up the idea that their father had started. John Rockefeller was a true American hero and helped shaped the way we run our country today. During the industrial revolution, Rockefellers ideals on humanitarianism were well respected and it is a shame there aren't more businesspeople like him today.
Rating: Summary: Excellent work Review: TITAN is a master of its genre. Chernow presents Rockefeller in all his goodness and badness. John D. Rockefeller is a complicated man. One of the great philanthropists and one of the Robber Barons. Chernow has written a book that is very rich in detail and this enriches the book immensely. Chernow pulls no punches and has given us an excellent biography of a complicated man. I came away with a much better understanding of who John D. Rockefeller was.
Rating: Summary: very interesting bio of a man i knew little about Review: well-written and full of interesting details . . . enjoyed reading how he was able to transform himself from one of most hated men in world to one of most respected.
Rating: Summary: Even handed, interesting and informative Review: I highly recommend this book. Yes it is long, but Rockefeller was a complicated man. The author shows us both side of Rockefeller. "... his good side was every bit as good as his bad side was bad." p469.Some previous reviews did not like the fact that this book also talks about Rockefellers wife and children in a fair amount of detail. I think this is an important aspect to understand him and his impact on others. Maybe the author could have reduced the amount of time/space spent on his philanthropy, especially that done by FDR Jr. (ie Rockefeller Ctr and Colonial Williamsburg). But even this was interesting to me.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring and enlightening Review: I hadn't had a desire to read, let alone buy a book in 13 years prior to this one. This one I couldn't resist on both accounts. I was held captive from the onset! I entend to read Chernow's other works.
Rating: Summary: An interesting story about an interesting man. Review: A biography about one of our first true tycoons that reads like a novel. The reader comes away with a picture of an extremely complex man, one who was shaped by his upbringing and reacted to the circumstances of the time. Having not read other biographies of John D., I do not have a basis with which to compare this author's perspective of the man or the facts surrounding him. M. Rockefeller is presented as a man, driven by his personal philosophy and often at odds with members of his family and business associates.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT !!! Review: I'm in my 30's and I don't know if I can write my own biography with so many details as Chernow did. Excellent book, excellent research and excellent writer. Now, I would like to read more about the following generations of Rockefellers.
