Rating: Summary: entertaining but....... Review: Fannie, the St. Louis Arch was built in 1963. Bobby and his Dad would not have stood under it on their trip to the World Series in pre 1946. I'm always thrown off when a book sets an event in a time frame that is inappropriate to the story. It somehow lessens the credibility of the story for me.
Rating: Summary: True history. Review: I've been looking forward to this book because I was born in Birch Tree, MO. I've lived in Missouri all my life and do know some of the history. Right away on page 27 a huge mistake! Doc and Bobby go to St.Louis to see the Cardinals play the St.Louis Browns in the World Series. Bobby had his picture taken under the "big steel Gateway Arch". I don't think so! The Arch wasn't built until the early '60's. This spoiled the book for me right away. Why do some authors not research history and make their novels realistic even though they are a work of fiction?
Rating: Summary: Lovely book, but have questions! Review: First of all, I love Fannie Flagg and would give this book 4 1/2 stars, but this review format didn't seem to give me that option! Many other reviews before mine tell about the story, so I won't go into that. I just have a couple of questions for Ms. Flagg or anyone else who might be able to solve these mysteries for me. Question #1 - Just how old is Aunt Elner and how old does she get by the end of this book?? In "Welcome To The World, Baby Girl," on page 16 (Chapter dated April 1, 1973), Norma Warren states that Aunt Elner is 93. By the end of "Standing In The Rainbow," we are in the section entitled "THE NINETIES" and Aunt Elner is still going strong and (p 484)". . .making so many new friends her own age that she was loving Florida . . ." By my calculations, by 1990 Aunt Elner would be 110! AND she is making friends her own age! I definitely want to know what fountain of youth all these folks have been drinking from! Question #2 - In "Welcome To The World . . .," the author states that Neighbor Dorothy's first child is Anna Lee and the radio show grew out of Dorothy's staying home baking cakes while tending to Anna Lee's minor health problems. In "Standing In The Rainbow," the story changes to the first child being a boy named Michael who died at age 4 and this is when, in her grief, Dorothy began to bake the cakes that led to the Golden Flake flour company offering her the radio program and Anna Lee came along later. How can this be??I read through all the reviews and nobody mentioned these (or other) inconsistencies. Was I the only one who noticed? Perhaps I was the only one who was bothered by it!! It's just when an author writes such well-drawn characters and makes the reader feel a part of their world, it's hard to have the "facts" suddenly change on you. Then the characters have lost their "realness." When characters carry over from book to book, you can't change their history and keep them believable. All that aside, I love you, Fannie Flagg, and have read (some more than once)and treasured each of your books. Please keep writing!
Rating: Summary: Fannie Flagg Does it Again Review: It was wonderful to be able to enter these people's lives, and see how they lived, thought and felt. Fannie Flagg again writes with wonderful insight and feeling. I have loved every minute of this book, as I always enjoy Ms. Flaggs books. The characters are so alive and real. Many of them remind me of people I know or knew. Many of their experiences I can relate to as well. I am always touched by her heartfelt books. They make me both laugh out loud, and at other times cry. This was a wonderful book, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Wish I was beginning it all over again, to enjoy the experience.
Rating: Summary: I WOULD stand in this rainbow anytime Review: Once again Fannie Flagg has written a book impossible to put down. Each and every page is filled with characters you know or knew. I must admit that I am not much of a fiction reader with the exception of Flagg and a few others. This is a must read for fans of Flagg and non-fans alike. I would be reading this at work and laughing so hard that tears would be flowing and then of course my co-workers would want to know what I was laughing about. There were the teary-eyed parts as well. I certainly hope Hollywood comes knocking and makes this one into a movie. While Fried Green Tomatoes was a much better book than a movie, it was still enjoyable and worth while and this would be so much fun to cast. If you're listening Hollywood, I have some people in mind. Well worth the time spent reading as all her books are. I just read "Daisy Faye" after my daughter begged me for years and now I have "Welcome to the World Baby Girl" waiting. I cannot wait to see what Fannie has in store next for us. Thanks for such alive characters and plots.
Rating: Summary: A total YAWNER Review: This doesn't even come close to Fried Green Tomatoes. Nothing happened and I kept waiting for something to happen. But by the time something did sort of happen you didn't care. It was the same thing chapter after chapter. I chose this clunker for book club and had to eat plate fulls of crow and humble pie since no one liked it.
Rating: Summary: Puts a smile on your face! Review: This is such a wonderful book about life and its triumphs and tribulations. I got it as an audio book and LOVED hearing dear Fannie's voice and sweet accent fill the characters with life. It's a perfect format for this one, since much is told through the radio show. Have fun!
Rating: Summary: one boring cliche after another Review: I am a big fan of Fannie Flagg's, so I was very suprised and disappointed by how cliched this book is. Every chapter is like an episode of 60's television. It reminds me of Our Town. I missed the fun and the laugh out loud humor of her previous books.
Rating: Summary: This would make a great Christmas gift. Review: I have always enjoyed Fannie Flagg's books.STANDING IN THE RAINBOW was no exception. It was funny and warm and old fashioned. The charecter development was so good. Each charcter was filled out to give them real life and real personalties so each reader got to know them as people they know in their own towns. The story hold your interest with some good turns. It's just a good read.
Rating: Summary: Standing in the Rainbow Review: This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The only thing that disappointed me about this book, was finishing it. I only have time to read for a few minutes in the evenings and every evening I looked forward to the few moments before bedtime that I could spend with the characters in this story. It's so refreshing to read a story that's all about the characters and their stories. It's not about the cussing, or how many sex scenes and 3 dollar words can be packed between the covers by arrogant authors whose thesaureses lay open next to their computers. It's just a pleasant read packed full of humor and justice for all!
