Rating: Summary: The Princess Diaries Review: Mia Thermopolis is just an average 14 year old girl; she is considered a freak by most of her peers and just wants to fit in, hates her looks, and is flunking Algebra. However, Mia's life starts to get interesting when her mom begins dating her teacher and her dad shows up and tells her that she's a princess. Unlike most girls who dream of becomming a princess one day, Mia is horrified. She doesn't know of anyone who is more unprincess-like than she is. Much to Mia's displeasure, her spiteful grandmother begins giving her princess lessons, which of course Mia despises. Throughout the novel, Mia has to make some tough decisions but is visibly maturing. She learns how much her friends really mean to her and that no matter how much you change on the outside, you're still the same on the inside. Meg Cabot does a great job of writing in a teenagers voice and uses many modern-day references that any teenager can relate too. However, I felt that the ending was left incomplete and the reader was left hanging. If someone doesn't read the sequals, they may be wondering what happened to all of the fun-loving characters.
Rating: Summary: This book really rocks! Review: This is my favorite book! It is one of the best books I have ever read! It is a great book for middle schoolers or anyone who wants a laugh. It can be kind of raunchy though, so I don't recommend this book for anyone under 12.
Rating: Summary: the movie was better Review: I decided to read this book because I saw the movie and liked it. I figured the book would be just as good and would tell me things the movie didn't. Unfortunately, I have to say that the movie was much more enjoyable than the book. The one thing that I can say was done well in this book is Mia's voice. Reading her words reminds me a lot of reading things I wrote when I was that age. Unfortunately, that was part of the problem. Mia's so concerned with explaining why things are so horrible in her life that she becomes oblivious to other things. And, contrary to what at least one other reviewer wrote, I don't think Mia was necessarily too pessimistic. I think that if, in her diary, she had concentrated a great deal on the wonderful things in her life, it would've been really unrealistic. I know that my diary was primarilly used as a venting area for all my frusterations, and secondarilly for describing my day. That bit of realism was a problem. I found myself wishing I could see things from another character's point of view. Mia could be so incredibly dense sometimes. Although early in the book she talks about her dad running a country, and later she thinks about all the special treatment she got at the airport and other places, she never seems to think that her dad is a prince. And then there's Michael - in spite of the fact that it's obvious that he's working up to asking her out, it never occurs to Mia to think this. I don't understand that, since even her friend, Lilly, noticed that Michael was "sexually harassing" Mia (and those are Mia's words). I occaisionally enjoyed the story, when there was one, but Mia and her reactions were often completely unrealistic. If I had read this book first, I think I might never have seen the movie - thankfully, both the plot and Mia herself are different in the movie.
Rating: Summary: Great Read...Especially for Christmas Review: It is a great read especially for Christmas because when my dad bought this book I knew it was totally worth the money. I keep this book as a souveneir for Christmas 2001. When I started reading the first page I already knew it'll lead to something new. This book talks about Mia, who is a "freak" because she is five foot nine, a flat-chested freshman and is flunking algebra. She has like a total crush on the most popular guy in the school: Josh Ritcher. So she gets him. But things don't turn out Mia thought they would. First Josh gets drunk and rubbed his leg with Mia's, then he smashed his lips with Mia's just to get on the cover of Teen Zine. Mia finally decides that Josh is so not the guy she thought he was, so they break up. Things turn out normal again. Lily and her are best friends again, and Josh and that bratty Lana is back together. Oh, and did I mention? Mia made a new friend, Tina.
Rating: Summary: Mama Mia! Review: The Princess Diaries is the perfect book!It prepares children younger than the book's heroine, Mia, about the trials of highschool. Through it's pages lies the meaning to be true to yourself, honest among friends and that you must always be brave and stand up. But the book{unlike the movie as a reminder}is packed with humor. I loved exploring the diary of a teenage girl, with as many flaws as good rights, and who sought out the meaning of friendship in a darker, realistic way than the way most teen shows portray a break up. Mia is an uncoventianal beauty that lightens up this masterpiece!
Rating: Summary: Every teenage girl should read this Review: Mia Thermopolis is just your average geeky teenage girl. She hangs out with her friends, talks about pop culture, and is failing math. Mia is absolutely devastated when her Mom starts dating her math teacher, which is sure to add to her freak reputation. Things go from bad to worse when Mia finds out she's the princess of Genovia. She is desperate to keep this a secret even from her closest friends. To further complicate things, her Grandmother shows up and starts insisting Mia take princess lessons. The plot of this book just sounds like your average rags to riches story but what saves it from that cliche is the characters. For once a writer has gotten how geeky teenage girls talk and act right. From major things like Mia and her best friend's fight to trivial things like how Mia's father reminds her of Captain Picard, Meg Cabot has really hit the nail on the head. Meg Cabot's attention to detail is another thing that makes this a fun read. I have no doubt that most teenage girls will enjoy this book but please don't make your decision to read it based on how much you like the Disney movie of the same name, which retains little of the book's charm.
