Summary: Fluffy read
Review: Well, I can't see this winning a Newbery, but neither do I feel that it is a bad book. Average, that's all.

Mia Thermopolis is an "average" ugly duckling in high school, a girl who dreams of the class hottie and frets over math and her looks and so on. But when her father comes home, what does she find out? He's not a politician, he's a European prince! Mia must adjust to this new information and everything that comes with it while tackling the problems of the everyday teenager.

It's a pleasant fantasy read--what girl WOULDN'T want to be a princess, secretly? But unfortunately I found the character of Mia herself to be unspectacular, a stock "ugly duckling" girl. The other characters are fairly interesting, though.

Some authors are capable of writing in the first person tense in such a way that you can actually SEE the events described unfolding (Robin McKinley springs to mind) -- but unfortunately this author does not. The narration is very bare-bones; the pop culture references were, to my mind, rather distracting.

This is a pretty good book, but I put it down after finishing it and felt no immediate urge to pick it back up.

Summary: The best book ever
Review: I first heard of this book by reading a sample in the magasine: Seventeen. I already knew I was going to love it. I started looking for it and when I finally found it I read it, and wished it would never end.

Summary: Maybe it's just me...
Review: ...But I didn't like this book. It wasn't at all what I expected. First of all, it has very little to do with Mia being a princess. That's just a thin disguise for what turns out to be a very standard ugly duckling story. (Unattractive, unpopular girl likes gorgeous guy who doesn't know she's alive; girl undergoes physical transformation, attracts notice of guy, discovers guy's a creep, falls for nice, less-attractive guy.) I thought young adult literature had moved forward from the days when all it took to transform a girl's life was a makeover and a new dress.

There are flaws within the princess theme as well. It's impossible to believe that Mia, deeply immersed in popular culture, had no idea her father was a jet-setting prince. No plausible explanation is offered. And Mia's objections to being a princess are shallow (she'll be mortified if her friends find out) and don't explore the deeper issues intent on such a theme.

However, even taken as light fare, the psuedo-teen speak and the whining become annoying after a while (as well as the superficial multiculturalism of the supporting cast). I recommend Ellen Conford's A ROYAL PAIN for a better handling of a similar theme.

Summary: Great!
Review: This book was totally on the mark about being a teenager! I could totally identify with Mia (except for the princes part). If you enjoy a book that you can identify with, this is for you! I loved this book, people will definitely be getting this book for Christmas!

Summary: This is the best book!
Review: In this book, Meg Cabot shows that there are more to princesses than pretty dresses, and looking beautiful, and being a snob. Mia is not your average princess, and she shows that some people just want to be a normal teenager! I absolutly loved it! In the book, Mia talks about how much of a pain it is to take "princess" lessons from the dreaded Grandmere! She is so cool!

Summary: The Princess Diaries
Review: I really enjoyed this book. It's about a 9th grader who isn't pretty, popular, big-chested, or anything else. She likes this guy named Josh, who of course likes the most popular and pretty girl in the school. Her parents aren't married, and her mom is dating her algebra teacher. (UGH!!) She hates algebra and is flunking it, so of course she's not very happy about it. Then she finds out that she is the princess of a tiny country that no one has ever heard of. I can't tell the rest, but I will say that it was a lot of fun to read about her adventures afterwards :) P.S. some other books you might like if you liked the Princess Diaries: the Alice books by the author of the shiloh books...phyllis something-or-other

Summary: A wonderful story!
Review: I never read books but this one catched my eye. The Princess Diaries was so entertaining and very well written. Mia, the main character seemed like a typical teenage girl, which makes it very easy to relate to. I hope that Meg Cabot will make more stories about Mia and her family and friends. I want to tell everyone to pick up a copy of this book!! Its worth the price!!

Summary: What we're giving for the holidays
Review: I had to pry The Princess Diaries out of my daughter's hands. Written by Meg Cabot (the book jacket says she is waiting for her real parents, the King and Queen to come forward) it is desperate (well, as desperate as a fourteen year old girl can be who just found out she is a princess and her free-spirit artist mother is dating her algebra teacher who is flunking her), funny (see previous and add her Grandmère flying over to give her proper princess lessons at the Plaza) and tells the tale which will leave you laughing, toasting the new royalty and wishing, just a bit that you were in her "five foot nine, flat-chested, freak of the school" Doc Marten shoes. A splendid book!
