Rating: Summary: Boring Review: The book started out pretty good but never got off the ground. It seemed that every chapter melted into the next and the author became very repetative. I have read a number of his books and have really enjoyed them. This was not one of them.
Rating: Summary: I was blown away Review: I began this book yesterday expecting to read another entertaining legal thriller by John Grisham. Instead I was blown away by a simple story told from the perspective of a young boy living in an era gone by.The story is so captivating because the characters are so real and so unforgettable. I finished this book today convinced that I have just read a true American classic. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Great change for John Grisham Review: When I heard Grisham was writing this type of book my first thought was that it would be boring. But based on his previous books a had to give it a chance. I wasn't disappointed! This book was fantastic, don't let the change of pace stop you from buying it!
Rating: Summary: Read it in one sitting Review: This was a great portrayal of rural life in Arkansas in the 50's. Told through the eyes of a very precautious 7yr old boy. Bought the book on Saturday afternoon, and did not put it down until I was done early Sunday morning. Suspense, mystery, love, action.....humour....had it all. Great read. Very differnt that the Grisham we're used to!
Rating: Summary: Better than a Buffet . . . You Never Have to Stop reading. Review: What a page-turner! I read it in one sitting. This book is like a fine buffet--you just can't stop. The characters are robust and realistic, the imagery superb and the action is non-stop. I can't wait for the movie! In this book John Grisham proves that he is a multi-faceted storyteller, there are no lawyers and they aren't missed. Parts of the story had me laughing out loud while others grinding my teeth in anger. This is one of his best books.
Rating: Summary: Different Review: I was hoping "A Painted House" by John Grisham would be more along the lines of "A Time to Kill," which I believe is by far his best piece of work. "A Painted House" is a much different style Mr. Grisham offers, and to be honest, was a little bit hard for me to stay with at first. However the story picks up when Luke witnesses the murder and keeps the reader more involved from that point on. Not his best, but still a good read.
Rating: Summary: A Grisham Reader (Trying to Read and Review All) Review: I have to say, for the first of the non legal novels JG is putting out, he has done a darn good job. The story is told in the eyes of a seven-year-old boy named Luke Chandler who lives in rural Arkansas on a cotton farm with his parents and grandparents. For hired hands in picking the crop come the "hill people" and Mexicans. Within these two groups, the action occurs finding Luke in the middle with a hundred secrets and questions. Throught the novel tragedy occurs and it is Luke's job, as the protagonist, to overcome them. My suggestion to you is this: if you are looking for a new twist on a great author, I would surely pick up this book.
Rating: Summary: Virgin Grisham Reader Review: Well, I haven't read any of the so called Grisham "classics" dealing with law and such, but I did grow up in what these days would be called the country, and I greatly appreciated this book. Although at my house, farming wasn't the primary means for money, I do vaguely remember having a vegetable garden as a child, and my grandfather growing sugar cane (as many Florida farmers do). These days have gone and people of my area have found more profitable ways to spend their time, but I have the country accent to prove country towns still do exist in this rapidly crowding world. With all that said, "A Painted House" brought back memories of days growing up miles from civilization like nothing else. I don't know if Grisham was a "good 'ole boy," but with this book, he could've fooled me. Most of the stories and details in the book were right on target, causing me to fondly (or not so fondly when he mentioned the switch whippings) remember the days as a child when life was easy, and no one cared who drove or wore what they did. I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever been fascinated by country life or grew up in country life themselves. The church references and family outings can't help but make you smile while lovingly remembering the days that seem so far ago when life was so simple.
Rating: Summary: Literature vs. The Legal Thriller Review: I have to admit that I like Grisham's legal novels, but the writing in those books does not compare to this. He has taken a step out of the best selling suspense genre and firmly landed in literature. There are many here who do not like this book because there is a need for instant gratification. This book is filled with detailed characterization and a rich landscape. For two nights, I was part of the Chandler family and suffered their trials. Grisham is a better writer than I had given him credit for. I know the legal thrillers please the masses, but beautifully written works of literature are a rare treat. Thanks for this one.
Rating: Summary: An Incredible Book From an Incredible Author!!!!!!! Review: I just finished A Painted House by John Grisham, and I have to say it was good! This is the 3rd book I have read by Grisham, the others being The Street Lawyer (Another Great On!!) and Skipping Christmas (A funny new take on the Holiday Season!) A Painted House takes you to rural Arkansas and once you meet the characters that live there and enter thier lives, you will never want to leave. Suspensful and heart-breaking at times, this is a book that celebrates the ups and downs of life, and will bring a smile to your heart and a tear to your eye!
