Rating: Summary: The painstaking slowness... of the painting Review: This book was a really good. It is about a boy who is seven years old and lives on a cotton farm. The town is really small, every one knows each other and there are lots of gossip...ect. Luke (the boy who is seven) has a very plain life and dreams of soon becoming a baseball player for the Cardinals. All life is the same until the family hires some workers to pick cotton on the farm. 10 Mexicans and 7 'Hill people'. This is where the trouble starts. Fights happen, someone is murdered, secrets revolve in Luke's head, and promises to keep them. The harvesting starts out the usual way but will end as usual? Or will a great climax come? And why is the house being painted white? Read this book to discover the secrets in Luke's head. This is a really good book since usually I like fantasy and sci fi. It is a good way to read reality and a farm life. The only thing I thought was weird was this boy, Luke, did not really seem 7 he seemed way older. I know a sever year old and they certainly would not survive picking cotton and keeping secrets of murder. She can't even write cursive that well. So overall that is why I would give it a 4, I would feel better if he had been older. Otherwise this was a really good book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes realistic fiction, or country books.
Rating: Summary: Dilemma Review: I am in a dilemma over my thoughts of this book. Just finished reading it and like another "reviewer" I would read for awhile, put it down and determine I COULD not finish it. I grew up in a time when money and jobs were REALLY scarce so I wonder about these people who are so very poor. Know there are many like them but do they have to be, with all that is available out there. I guess my thinking is Grisham's book would have been more realistic had it been written about "The Big Depression Era" rather than a time when there were jobs and help available. I am not in great sympathy with the "poor me" syndrome which seems so prevalent in this great nation, and this book seems to almost "glorify" the people who are really ne'er do wells. Try harder next time, Mr Grisham. You are too good to write books of this quality.
Rating: Summary: A different type of Grisham novel Review: Not the usual type of Grisham novel, but interesting. I think he should have made this "through the eyes of Luke, a seven year old", but told by him as an adult. Not many seven year olds that I know would think quite like this. I would like to see a sequel just to find out Grisham's idea of what happened to these people.
Rating: Summary: Easy read, typical Grisham ending Review: I found this book to be an easy read with compelling characters. Although the book made no mention of lawyers, it still followed the Grisham style of a muddy ending. What happened to these people and why did you stop writing? I guess he wants to leave that to our imagination. If I continue to read Grisham, that's what I'm gonna get.
Rating: Summary: A Painted House Review: Sorry. This one just didn't hit me. I thought it was very boring and kept waiting for something exciting to happen. Even the ending was a letdown. Outside of a couple of murders there was no excitement. And certainly no mystery.
Rating: Summary: WRONG STADIUM Review: This is a good read in the tradition of "To kill a Mocking Bird" as well as many fine reads in the southern tradition. The only unfortunate thing was that a book that has an underlining theme of baseball through out should not of refered to "Tiger Stadium" 7 or 8 years before it was called that. Those of us who frequented "Briggs Stadium" in the years refered to will wonder about that bit of research. (...)
Rating: Summary: yawn - I just don't think I can go on anymore Review: I am a third of the way in and I keep asking myself if I can take anymore. This is almost as bad as The Chamber. How did this book make any bestseller list? Save your money unless you have difficulty sleeping at night.
Rating: Summary: Good read, but a little to unreal Review: I am not talking unreal about some of the things that happened. I am talking unreal that Luke is 7 years old. No way in the 1950's is a boy going to be thinking some of the things that Luke does. I really enjoyed learning the history about picking cotton and what the 1950's were all about in Arkansas. I love baseball and it was great reading about the Cardinals and what it was like for Luke to see his first game on TV. This was a great story as I found myself seeing what the rain was like and the floods. If you like to learn a little history, and like a little suspense then this is the book for you. I don't believe that it is a non stop read. I had no trouble ending my reading for the day after a couple of chapters, but I was always ready to start reading again when I did. I would advice everyone to read this book. Good read in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: painted house 2 Review: I personally need a sequel to this one. I need to see what happened to all those people that became so fond of that were just left there. Please sequel this one.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read Review: Because I love the legal thrillers, I was reluctant to try "A Painted House" but then a friend loaned it to me and I was hooked. Its a good story and found that I was pulled into Luke's world and was always left wondering what would happen next. A different genre for Grisham, but one that is well written and a good read.
