Summary: A must for every woman
Review: Twelve years ago my mother bought this tape from London, and I never liked it at that time because I was a crazy teenager, In fact I used to make fun of my mother whenever I saw her excercise it. After I have become a mother, and after getting into the stresses of every day life, I realized how valuable Callanatics is. It's magic lies in its RELAXING advantage. It firms the body after only five sessions of exercise. It really does not make you lose weight, but it does shape every spot in your body. It might seem boring especially for younger people, but it is a must for adults and especially women. After I had my first baby, I faced many great stresses and depression, so I returned to my mother's advice. She always insisted that I should give Callanatics a try, I never listened. So after I had my baby I decided to give the execises a try, and the results were great in every sense. I regained my beatiful shape in three moths of hardworking. I did not need to lose weight at that time, but I needed to shape up and regain my flexibility and youthfulness. When I became pregnant for the second time, I consulted my doctor, and she advised me warmly to practice Callanatics, so I used to exersice it until the fifth month of my pregnancy, and my delivery was so easy. Now after three years of bringing my second child, I still use Callanatics. Some times I get bored of it, so I just shift to an aerobic workout and then return back to it. You might find no time for it at first because it takes about 60 minutes to do, but once you try it, you'll now it is worth it and you'll have to create the time for doing it. It might seem difficult at first, but don't be frustrated. The first time I did it, I cried and felt old and frustrated, but thanks to my mother's encouragement for she had tried it and wanted the best for me. For three years now I've been using Callantics for at least twice a week. One more wonderfull thing about Callanatics is that it is suitable for all ages, and it wont harm your joints or back like other jumping and dancing excercises especially if you are over forty or fifty. I personally believe that old people must try it because they need to relax and it will help them in getting rid of many of their neck, legs, and back pains. Most of all they need to try it because it is the ONLY excercise program that considers people's ages. I adore it, I love it, it is amazing, fast working, and relaxing. You HAVE to Buy it!

Summary: Never enjoyed exercise until now!!
Review: I have problems with my knees. With Callanetics, I have no problem. Since I've been using Callanetics, the muscles around my knees get stretched and the burning feeling has stopped. No pressure is applied to my knees and I feel wonderful. This is the best exercise product that any one can use. Thank you Callan Pinckney for making exercise a pleasure to do!!!

Summary: The best $10 I ever spent!
Review: I'll admit that this tape has flaws, but the results from doing the exercises are so good that I'm still giving it five stars. I've been doing the workout for two months now, and I look better than I did at this weight when I was 15 years old running cross country! (I'm 33 now and have two children.) I was getting such good results after my first few workouts that I became addicted to the exercises. That had never happened to me before.

As has been mentioned already, this is not an aerobic workout. And yes, most exercises are repeated 100 times, but that's a fast 100. It's *so* worth it! Once you know the routine, the workout takes about 45 minutes if you do it without the tape.

Callan does contradict herself sometimes, but that seems to be because she was still evolving the exercises. If you have the Callanetics book, you'll notice that she modified some of the exercises for the tape. For example, on the stomach exercises the book says that when your knees are bent to hold your arms parallel to your legs. But on the tape she says to hold them parallel to the floor (the latter is more difficult). Even if you don't do everything the way she says, you'll still get great results if you do these things:

1-Relax the muscles that are not the specific ones performing an exercise (for example, don't tense your legs when you're exercising your stomach).

2-Tip your pelvis up (don't stick out your behind).

3-Make very, very small movements with each exercise.

Listen to Callan's comments on each exercise. It's hard to absorb all of them in the beginning, but don't worry about it. As you progress, you'll be able to improve the positioning of your body.

If you have a hard time the first day you do the workout, don't give up. I'd suggest committing to five workouts before dismissing the tape. After the first day I was so sore that I had to do the workout again the next day just to relieve my muscles. After the third workout I was feeling better after exercising instead of worse. Now I'm still a work in progress, but my leg and stomach muscles are becoming rock hard with absolutely no bulk. It's fantastic!

Summary: Better for your back
Review: This video has withstood the test of time. I wish there were a new one out without all of the explanations and side trips so that you can work right through it. The extra stuff does get boring to listen to after a while. I learned using the book, but the video has form pointers and gives you the correct speed to work the exercises.

I actually like the music--it sounds kind of new age--but could do without the announcer.

The best part is that she is always careful about your back, which is not something you can say about other videos out there. I would not buy the Quick Callanetics videos--this one has everything you need. There is a beginning Callanetics Video that is also good if you can find it--it has a lot of modifications.

If you can get hold of the original Callanetics BOOK, do so. Callanetics Countdown is also good, if you want to design a shorter program, or work up to the long program gradually. I don't like to always do the long program, and sometimes it's easier to carve out 30 minutes instead of 45. No, it is not an aerobic program, but nothing stops you from using aerobic breathing methods with it.

Summary: Getting fit in Georgia
Review: If you are looking for aerobics, this is not the tape for you. If you want to get fit, give this one a try. The exercises look easy, but you will be amazed at the soreness you will feel after the first day. The reason I have so thoroughly enjoyed this tape since it first came out is she encourages you to listen to your muscles, do not overdo, and give yourself time to work up to an advanced level. The exercises are all small motion and numerous repetition which may seem boring, but it is so relaxing and invigorating after a long hard day. You will definitely lose inches and notice increased muscle tone in a short period of time. And if you do it long enough you will notice your own progrees within a few months because you will see yourself doing the exercises better and more like the experts on the tape. I hope you enjoy this tape as much as I have over the years.

Summary: Why does everybody like this video?
Review: I really don't know why this tape is rated that good. I couldn't really work out with it and it didn't help me in any way. I agree that the exercises are sometimes good ones, but it's soooo boring to repeat every movement 25 to 50 to 100 times, as recommended.I always had to stop the tape.I never felt refreshed afterwards, just tired- and it never had any effect on my waist. I think her method is only a cheap mixture of active stretching, isometric strenghtening and a bit of Pilates, but it would be better for everybody to really learn from Bob Anderson ("Stretching")or from Pilates. And besides, I really hated this keyboard background music and all the pink stuff.

Summary: Callanetics
Review: I have been using this exercise video on and off for the past 10 years. It is a very quick, effective deep muscle workout. I combine it with an aerobic workout and get wonderful results. The exercises look deceptively easy, but you will be sore after the first few times of completing the exercise program. The music and the video itself can be kind of cheesy, although that's to be expected from a video made 14 years ago. At least once you learn the exercises, you can turn the volume down!

Summary: Build your core muscles without hurting your back.
Review: My chiropractor told me about this video, because I had a weak lower back. I get a deep, full workout and strengthen my back and neck without injury like so many other workouts out there. I have found this workout to be very challenging and gratifying all at the same time. You can go at your own pace, and it's really exciting once you start to get the hang of it. If you want abs and buns of steel.. this is the workout for you! (Not to mention the triceps of steel you'll acquire!). In the November/ December issue of Massage Magazine Callanetics gets rave reviews from the people who know bodies.

Summary: you get what you pay for
Review: If you want to be thin, Callanetics may be the workout for you. You won't be fit (you won't even break a sweat), but you'll be thin. Callan likes to say things like "imagine what your inner thighs look like, jiggling while you walk" to try and motivate you.

The material in the video is disorganized: for example, the demo of how you can use a table instead of a barre is in the middle of the video, *after* the barre exercises are over, when a real fitness instructor would have put it at the beginning of the videotape. Callan likes to hear herself speak and she will introduce little 'I am such a ballerina' flourishes into each exercise - the price of this is she does some exercises differently on each side. Her directions are unclear and in correcting her students' positions, she'll often contradict herself. And she doesn't bother to stretch muscles unless they are in danger of being bulky and unsightly. The overall tone is unprofessional.

Callan herself is pretty annoying; she strains to affect a British accent, badly and inconsistently, and in the intro she almost brags about how she doesn't have "a string of fancy degrees." The students in the video are sullen and resentful-looking. Even the long-time Callanetics veterans are skinny in a flabby, unhealthy kind of way: no naturally flushed cheeks and glowing skin here (though the women students have all been made up, even the 72-year-old). If a friend of mine were starting on this program, I would insist that she alternate it with an aerobic workout, and take the whole thing with a grain of salt.
