Rating: Summary: A memorable, exciting, educational book...and now abridged! Review: "What Do People Do All Day" is really a one-of-a-kind book. As a toddler and older child, I was enthralled by Scarry's colorful and highly detailed pictures and his fun characters, and I especially recall the sections on water treatment and electrical power generation. This book, unlike any other, certainly stimulated my early interest in a career. Speaking from experience, a kid can spend hours poring through this book, and he can remember details from it for years. Unfortunately, it seems that a few boneheads at the publisher don't share my exceptional feelings for the book and have abridged it, removing the two sections I have mentioned and more. Shame on them!

Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: As children, my sister and I read this book to PIECES. Now that I am a preschool teacher and starting my own family, I would love to have a complete, unabridged, attached copy (the copy from childhood can be found in pieces in a box at parents house). I remember the parts about making streets and making paper. The street part is what reminded me about the book, as the street in front of my school was being repaved and the children were asking what all the trucks do. If I had the book, I could have shown them:(
Rating: Summary: Relive childhood early reading memories! Review: As ever Scarry delivers a fine story book based on the growing child's everyday world brought the more to life by his inimical illustrations. Full of action and a well developed narrative which children from about 2 can follow verbally and trace with their finger across the page picture-by-picture, this is a book to truly delight adults and youngsters. If you remember Scarry from your own childhood, as many of you will, then those wide eyed smiling animal characters will immediately transport you back to 1968 (the date of the orginal book's publication). Note that this book is the abridged version, but loses nothing for that. We have a very bashed original and also Scarry's marvellous "366 Stories" - a story or poem for everyday of the year ( including Leap Years)...will they ever get round to publishing that great classic??? Enjoy "What Do People Do All Day" - the children will thank you for it in , oh, about 2028.
Rating: Summary: Lowly Worm is God! Review: I adored all of Richard Scarry's wonderful and informative books as a child, and this one is the best. As mentioned in another review, this edition is very much abridged and that's a shame. Better than nothing, I suppose, but nothing compares to the original.
Rating: Summary: Abridged Edition is missing a third of the book Review: I bought my childhood favorite for my son. Unfortunately, only the abridged edition is now available, which is missing a third from the original book. I wish Random House will bring back the book that taught me so much as a child.
Rating: Summary: Colorful, fun, informational, and most of all influential¿. Review: I carried this wonderful book around like a bible when I was young. The pictures remind me of Where's Waldo, with lots of exciting things going on in every page. It can keep a child interested for hours on end. What Do People Do All Day is one of the reasons why I am studying to be an architect! It is a must have for any child, no matter how hard it is to find.
Rating: Summary: What Do People Do All Day Review: I grew up with this book and it always remained as a special memory for me. I was ecstatic to order it for my daughter. Without any prompting from me, it has become her favourite book and she loves the reality of the stories as well as the colourful characters. If you want a great book for your young kids to enjoy for years. This is the one. Enjoy !
Rating: Summary: Fabulous children's book Review: I had this book when I was very little and we read it as a bedtime story almost every night. The inner workings of factories and houses was fascinating to me, and I remember enjoying picking out my favorite characters on each page. Lowly Worm and Huckle Cat will always be my favorites.
Rating: Summary: I can't recommend it highly enough! Review: I remember this wonderful book well from the last time I read it - in 3rd grade and that was 16 years ago. For the inquisitive child, this book will open their eyes. I bought a copy for my children recently and am pleased that I can still remember much of it - which shows what an influence this book was!
