Rating: Summary: IT HAD VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH HORSES! Review: I bought the book thinking I was going to be reading a wonderful horse story only to find out that it was about a love affair! I would have rathered more about horses.
Rating: Summary: much better than the movie Review: I was a girl that loved horse books, and this is the best one I read since Black Beauty and national velvet when i was little. I couldn't put it down, and spent all saturday reading.
Rating: Summary: flat writing Review: This is one of the worst books I have ever read. I am not offended by the character's adultery. I am offended that such a book would see the light of day. The author makes no effort to develop the characters. He is not capable of writing realistic dialogue. The word loins actually appears in one of the silly sex scenes! It was not even a fun trashy read.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK Review: I am a horseback rider, and i learned alot from this book. I learned that animals need and greatly deserve respect. Even if one is not a rider, there are many lessons that can be learned from the book about relationships with other human beings. Each character was very well-developed. Especially Tom. At the end, one sympathizes with him because you feel like you are his best friend. I loved the book and recommend it to anyone, horseback- rider or not.
Rating: Summary: Sensitive, heartwarming, lovestory; better than a movie Review: You can almost feel the countryside, the breeze, his hand on her arm. The story compells the reader to it's finish. Interesting idea taken from the true story of a horse whisperer, but making him handsome, kind, and readable. Some tense moments to keep you turning the pages.
Rating: Summary: "Pretty good" fiction Review: Working in a bookstore, I've read a ton of fiction out there, especially bestsellers. I think for his first try, Mr. Evans deserves a slap or two on the back. I've noticed that most fiction takes a little easing into to get the plot going. This book, however, quickly sweeps you off of your feet from the very first chapter and doesn't stop going until the last quarter of the book. It loses a little steam at the end, true, but overall it is a very touching story about the way an injured horse and one man affected a family. I was disappointed in the lack of actual "whispering" done, but I think the story was written to be about the MAN, not the horse...after all, the title does concern him. And why shouldn't it focus on the people and their problems? If you want to read about HOW a whisperer works his magic, try the non-fiction aisles. You might learn a lot more there.
Rating: Summary: First time I ever liked a movie more than the book... Review: Thank heavens Mr. Redford had the intelligence to change the ridiculous ending of this book. Tom would no more have ended his life that way than Annie would have fallen for a man whose hands were so hard she wondered if they could feel her skin. It was great to see Bob on the big screen, weaving his charm in a way no author could ever capture. Skip the book, just go see the movie.
Rating: Summary: The horse could've died, and no one would've cared!! Review: I read this book expecting a heart warming tale about a horse and what I got was a book about an unlikable, selfish woman having an affair with a man that was supposed to heal the horse and the girl, but somehow got too tangled up in sleeeping with Annie to care. I'm only 13, and I didn't want to read about their sex life etc. All I wanted was a nice story with a horse in it. But this book is truly twisted and sick and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.
Rating: Summary: I was truly disapointed with this book. Review: I was disapointed with the shallow plot and undeveloped characters. The story was predictable. I'm not fond of finding one's soulmate outside of one's marriage. It is to my chagrin that this book is a bestseller. I think good literature does not necessarily get on the bestseller list. I have been disappointed before reading books from that list. I like the Oprah bookclub list and asking people for recommendations.
Rating: Summary: Go See the Movie Instead Review: I just saw Robert Redford's beautiful movie version of The Horse Whisperer last night. I must say that I loved what he did to the story. Redford took out all of the sleaze and trash that made the last third of this book so awful and transformed it into the magical story about horses, families, and healing that I think the author originally intended. I give Redford credit for not selling out with cheap sex scenes like the author seemed to think he had to do. Do yourself a favor and save your reading time for something more worthwhile.
