Summary: Not Nearly As Good As The Film
Review: I read the book before seeing the movie, so I had no expectations other than what I had read from the back cover. I was sorely disappointed in any case. What promised to be an uplifting story of courage became an exhaustive effort to get to the last page. The constant gloom of the characters made me wish I could just toss the book away. Much to my misfortune, I wanted to finish the book to see if it got any brighter at the end. It didn't. This book doesn't have the heart and courage of the movie--which I was reluctant to watch, expecting the same pall of depression felt in the book, but was pleasantly suprised. Rent or buy the film instead!

Summary: His second best
Review: I read Evans' book "The Loop" first. That is one of my favorite novels. Unfortunately, it created unrealistic expectations for the author's first novel. The Horse Whisperer is a good read, but the characters are just not that likeable -- particularly Annie, who is the kind of person I try to avoid: caustic, arrogant, and cold. Still, the book kept my interest, and made a fine movie.
The Horse Whisperer shares similarities with another first-time effort I completed yesterday -- Dead Hand Control by Tim Stutler (see my review on Amazon.com). The books make for interesting comparisons. Each deals with a developing adolescent, thoughtful plot line, flawed (and adulterous) parent, wonderful descriptive language, and great twists. Dead Hand Control has the added value of well-timed humor -- something The Horse Whisperer could benefit from. Also, unlike Annie and her family, the characters in Stutler's book were sympathetic beings I really came to care about.
Overall, though, The Horse Whisperer is a very good first effort.

Summary: The Horse Whisperer
Review: This book seems to be another stab at writing in the magical realism genre, and it also reminds me of the "Bridges of Madison County" in that it features a mystical man who meets a woman who is in a predictible, even boring marriage. They have a brief affair, he disappears and she is left with her memories (in this book's case, she was silly enough to have his child). I felt the book's opening scene was good, but it went downhill from there; the characters felt cardboardy and even a bit too unreal.
If you like magical realism, I would recommend Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He is a master at it, and the love scenes are beautifully written without a jarring resort to explicitness.

Summary: This was one of my favorite books thus far....
Review: I saw the movie before I read the book...I certainly wasn't expecting it to end the way it did. I enjoyed the way the author went into such detail. Now, I'm not one of those people that thinks this kind of thing actually happens everyday...but it was a wonderful story line. I would reccommend this book to anyone.

Summary: All hype and no substance...
Review: This book seems to be another attempt at creating a magical realism novel, like The Bridges of Madison County--a lone man with mystical powers, one failed marriage and ta da...who finds the ONE woman for all time--only she is trapped in a marriage she is bored or unhappy with. They have a brief affair and then he walks out, never to be seen again. I couldn't relate to the characters very well. They seemed made of cardboard. In my opinion this book meets the standard for pop literature, not high literature. If it's high-quality magical realism with great love scenes and scary situations you want, I strongly suggest Gabriel Garcia Marquez's books. That's one person who knows how to write in this genre!

Summary: School Project
Review: The Horse Whisperer is a compelling and heart warming story of a mother's struggle to lift the spirits of her secluded daughter. When 12 year old Grace Graves is injured in a terrible horseback riding accident, she loses her best friend, her leg, and the will to live. Pilgrim, Grace's horse is so horribly injured that it seems there is nothing to do for him but to put him down. Annie, Grace's mother can not bear killing such an important part of her daughters life because she thinks of it as giving up on her daughter's recovery. When things look the worst for the Graves Family, Annie knows she had to do something for her wounded daughter that would eventually bring them closer together. She reads about a mythical horse whisperer who can tame grief stricken horses just by touching them and whispering to them. Just when things look the worst for Annie and Grace, a horse whisperer comes into their lives in the form of Tom Booker, a rugged and hansom cowboy from Montana. Tom is the answer to their prayers. Annie drags Grace across the country against her will in hopes that Tom will take a look at their injured horse. Tom is reluctant at first, but after seeing the look of desperation in Annie's eyes, he agrees to see the horse. Annie and Grace have found their niche in Montana and Tom has brought them together. Then there is a plot twist. Annie and Tom have a passionate affair that ends in tragedy. This book will change the way you think about life and how precious and fragile it is. It is a wonderfully written novel that will warm your hearts.

Summary: The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans
Review: I had to choose a book to read for a class project so, since I'm a cowgirl and all I decided that I would read "The Horse Whisperer" because I thought I would be able to relate to it fairly easy and that it would be fun to read. Boy was I right. I did not particularly care for some of the language used in the book but it sure did not take away from the content of the book. If you like horses or just like a good read then I would definetly recommend that you read this book. The book is about a girl named Grace and her horse Pilgrim. They had went out on a ride with one of Grace's friends when they got into a severe accident. Then they took Pilgrim to this guy named Tom's place that could talk to animals while he tried to heal them. While they were there Grace's mom Annie starts to fall for him. What ends up happening to Grace and Pilgrim? You will have to read the book to find out. I dont want to give the book away because then it would be no fun to read but I will tell you that it has a really good ending. Is Grace an only child or does she have a sibling? I cant tell you that either. It will shock you though when you read it.

Summary: The Horse Whisperer is one truely a beautiful film
Review: I've not just seen the film and I was amazed, it was the most amazing film that I've ever seen. And Robert Redford as the horse whisperer is on truely amazing actor. And if I ever read the book I'll think the same of that as it's just gonna be the same as the film only in the palm of my hands.

So for this film and book I'd have to give it 5 stars as it's just an amazing story.

Summary: Great horse book
Review: I really liked this book, I thought Mr. Evans did a super job incorporating the horses, and facts about the animals & accurate descriptions. Where as in some books about certain things, they are more of a back drop to sell the book, here I think Mr Evans was true to the story & had a good mix of the love story, family story & horse story. The only thing was that since I saw the movie, it kind of ruined the book, I pretty much knew already what was going to happen. So, I'd recommend reading the book first.
