Rating: Summary: Esperanza and her family find themselves in another move... Review: ... but this time into the dirty town on Mango Street. Esperanza knows she's destined for more than she has and refuses to end up like the many residents of her new home. The House on Mango Street tells Esperanza's story as she meets new people and becomes involved with new situations she's never experienced before. While she decorates the story with intelligent metaphors and comparisons of everyday objects (red balloon compared to freedom), the book's grammar is sloppy and improper (often lacking such things as quotation marks). Though it further helps connect with the 'street kid' personality most of the characters have, it can be confusing for some readers. The short vignettes sometimes seem like 'fillers' to keep the important plot developments spread further apart but each story has its own moral, backed up by bits of humor, mystery, and sadness. The changes Esperanza go through as she ages, physically and emotionally, are noticeable and interesting. Overall, the main point of this book can become vague at times, but it's a nice read and a perfect addition to any collection.
Rating: Summary: awesome for what it is Review: Cisneros has created true masterpiece of contemporary American literature. The House on Mango Street is a series of interrelated vignettes (keep that in mind: these are not short stories, they are vignettes) that captures the love, joy, family, sorrow, and both hopefullness and hopelessness of growing up a Latina girl. This collection has already been accepted into the canon, and can only become more loved and respected as more young people come across it.
Rating: Summary: The HOuse On MangO Street Review: This novel is by Sandra Cisneros , she is one of the most brilliant of today's young writers. This novel is great for all ages, it fun and easy to read. The House on Mango Street is about this young girl named Esperanza Cordero, growing up. She has secret dreams and the novel is called what its called because it's the name of the street that her parents bought, which isn't the house she or her parents wanted. Esperanza was named after her grandmother, and although she is beautiful and can get any guy she'd like, she refuses to seek out a man to "escape" , because she has seen too many unhappy marriages. This young lady sees the joyous and harsh realities of life and at times wishes to get out of Mango Street. This novel had a great ending to it and is very much well written, I hope u will read it and see it the same way.
Rating: Summary: That was a cool book Review: The House on Mango Street was a inspiring story. The setting of the story was in Lomis Street at 3:00 p.m 13 years ago.The main characters in the book were Mama,Papa,Carlos,Kiki,Nenny, and Esperanza. My favorite character was Esperanza because she sounded like a girl that likes to dream a lot and takes care of her sister that comes after her.My favorite part of the book was when she was describing all of her family's hair.I recommend this book to a teenager because they will probably understand it more than smaller kids.
Rating: Summary: The House on Mango Street Review: I appreciated this book for how realistic it was to life of a young girl and how it displayed all her feelings in a simplistic way. I liked how it showed how Esperanza viewed life and the conditions around her, and how some questions were never answered (i.e. how old she is, the significance of the music box). I didn't find it a show-stopper book, though.
Rating: Summary: Life in the slums Review: This book really got to me. It showed how true life is not like all the other fantasy books that are read daily. The House On Mango Street was written in a childs point of view so it is fairly easy for kids to understand, even adults can relate to the way Esperanza feels as she is growin up. The way that she seems like she is the only one who feels that way that she feels, and if she was in charge everything would be good and enjoyable. Esperanza begins to relize how life really is as she grows older. She understands in a way why things are the way they are and you can only do your best to make it good, you cannot control all the other people in the world. overall i though this was an ok book, but real strong in showing the life of a child, especialy those who are less fortunate. I would recomend this book to anyone and everyone.
Rating: Summary: Good but, Not Great Review: I did not really like the book, but the way it was written was a very good way to convey the information and overall picture the author was trying to get across to the reader. The small vignettes made for quick easy reading. I think the book would be appreciated more if it were read with no pressure of tests. I would recommend this book to middle school children and suggest they read it in their spare time it can be read in one sitting.
Rating: Summary: Half and Half on Mango Street Review: The House on Mango Street is a good book, but confusing! At the end of the book everything comes together. I thought, while reading the book though, that some of what Cisneros' added was information that wasn't really needed. Overall, however, I thought the book had a good meaning and moral; you just need to get to that part! The thing I liked most about the book was the informal writing style. I thought it was easier to read and faster moving than most books. The vignette style also made it easier for me to follow. Cisneros is a good author and this book certainly shows it!
Rating: Summary: The House On Mango Street Review: I think that the house on mango street was a fairly good book. Judging that i didn't have a choice if i could read it or not, (school project,) i had to finish it. This book taught me to not take for granted what you have, because Esperanza lives in a poor neighborhood, in a crummy house, (from her point of view.) The writer also used two types of writing which were new to me: vignetees and no quotations. When she had people saying things, she just wrote them in, and didn't use quotations. Also, vignetees were new to me. They are a bunch of random, short stories, usually expressed in a poem/story like way. All-in-all...i think that this book was great, and that you should read it! :)
Rating: Summary: Are we still on Mango Street? Review: This book was OK. I think it would be good if you were in an airplane on in the waiting room. It is a quick read. Some intersting things about this book was that the speaker didn't use quotes until one of the later chapters when she talks about herself. It is a collection of short stories of someone's life and it goes off into different topics and leaves you asking: Are we still on Mango Street?
