Rating: Summary: Read it in an airport Review: Not a bad read but not worth the hardback purchase price! I would suggest that this is the perfect book to read in an airport or on an airplane. It may become less interesting with time though I must wonder if one of the main characters is modeled after John McCain. I fear that Grisham is just cranking out the books. Where is the hero?
Rating: Summary: Another excellent read from John Grisham Review: I was hooked after reading the first chapter. The weaving of the two plots, setting up the thought of how they would eventually intersect made for much intrigue. The end of the book was neat but left me wondering how much we really know about the government, elections and prisons in this country.
Rating: Summary: Where is the hero? - Review of "The Brethren" Review: In his latest novel "The Brethren", John Grisham forgets the key component of what makes his lawyer-courtroom saga formula so successful: the Hero. With no clearly defined protagonist, the reader has no one to root for in this unfortunately simple novel. While it is a relief that this latest novel does not have a preachy subtext (death penalty, save the rainforests, tobacco), it is missing the crafty heroes of his previous works. "The Brethren" is a nice, quick read for fiction escape artists. But unlike a "Time to Kill", its not a must read.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put It Down Review: I enjoyed The Brethren. While it is not the best work by Grisham, it is certainly a good read for the money. The plot development was steady and riveting while the characters were colorful and well thought out. I felt the ending was a bit anti-climatic yet fitting with what I believe to be a major theme in The Brethren.....We are all prisoners of our own sins. Once I started reading The Brethren I couldn't put it down!
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I just finished The Brethren, and as stated above I am somewhat disappointed. While reading the book, with its carefully crafted plotlines I failed to develop any empathy for any particular character. In short, I felt that Grisham could have developed some of his characters better, especially Lake. As for the ending I agree with others in believing it could have been developed better, not a blockbuster ending but something with more depth such as in The Partner.
Rating: Summary: Thats it ...? Review: I've always enjoyed his books. But this one is too easy. The plot and all would make a good movie someday but all in all, there's something missing. The legal manuevering that we've all accustomed to is just not there.I like the cover though.
Rating: Summary: The Brethren Review: John Grisham's new book was definetely a great read, but it did lack the complexity of other Grisham's novels. The story was brillant, but ended without closure. The novel just suddenly stopped. Overall, it must be read by all Grisham's fans, but it was by far not his best work.
Rating: Summary: Grisham-lite Review: The latest offering by Grisham is a disappointment for those of us who were expecting the same riveting intrigue as his previous novels. I found the plot to be predictable and the characters were uninspiring. This was definately "Grisham-lite." I've read better Nancy Drew stories. I expected to see that he had only loaned his name to this effort.
Rating: Summary: Solid Review: Grisham delivers again. This is the best page-turning thriller since Craig Furnas' THE SHAPE. I read THE BRETHREN in three days.
Rating: Summary: Where is the hero? Review: This book definitely does not live up to Grisham's usual standards. I kept waiting to like one of the characters and never did. The character depth is just not there. I give it two stars because I expected much more and was disappointed.
