Summary: Oh Brother!
Review: Read the book on a flight from Dallas to Nashville. Yes we were delayed but even then it was one of those books that is hard to put down once the first page is turned.

The story is about 3 (ex)judges who are incarcerated in a Federal prison for various crimes and how they decide to run a scam to feather their nests in preparation for their eventual prison releases. With the aid of a disreputable lawyer who acts as a go between they proceed to blackmail prominent goverment and high profile company employees.

Although the ending was a trifle disappointing the story was the usual Grisham 'classically brilliant' prose. Thoroughly enjoyable.

The audio version was very entertaining and well read. It sure filled the silences on a long road trip.

Summary: Many sleepless nights.
Review: I was never much of a reader until I picked up my first John Grisham novel. His books seem to be written in a way that keeps your attention throughout. In every chapter there are three or four different slory lines. Mr. Grisham will build your suspense and then immediately switch to another story line thus making it very difficult to put down. I believe that by switching directions as much as he does it allows the reader to feel that the book is not dragging on. Mr. Grisham has made it very difficult for me to pick up a book that doesn't have his name on the cover.

Summary: Not the best book of Grisham
Review: This was a strange reading, at first very interesting with the life of three lawyer in jail and then when the CIA director decides to have a new president who wants more money for the army, but when the book explains the debate of the candidates and the trips for their campaign, is really boring, you just don't know if you want to read it till the end or just leave the book and start a new one.

Summary: Fast Read
Review: Another great book by Grisham. The plot reminds you of what is going on in current day politics, from the resident President to government officials in prison still scamming people. This is by far the fastest book of Grishams I have ever read. It kept me wanting more and it was hard to put down. When the book was over I still wanted more. Great Read.

Summary: Grisham strikes again!
Review: He's struck gold. Brilliant, the plot is incredibly fined into a way that it unravels quickly into each character. I was absolutley befounded by this book... these judges build up a plan to escape and on the same road also become rich by black mailing others with their very own sins. I highly recommend this book, and the ending is great-although others have said was not good. Trust me it will suprise you.

Summary: A Grisham 'Must Read'!
Review: It's been a while since I picked up a book by Grisham, one of my favorite authors, and recently The Brethren was available at my local library, ..., so I grabbed it.

What a pleasure this book was! Great story, (makes you think about recent world developments in a new way), and interesting characters. There were times when it was difficult to put the book down.

I've always been please with Grisham so there may be a bias to this book, but I would say in my opinion it is in his top 3. If you're a Grisham fan I'm sure you'll like it and if not, it's a good place to start and see if Grisham is for you.

Summary: This one needs a "Street Lawyer" to get it out of trouble
Review: I have loved every John Grisham book that I've read until this one. "The Street Lawyer" and "The Chamber" are my favorites. This one needs a street lawyer to get it out of trouble. This one is indeed out on the streets and it needs help. There are no memorable characters in it and the writing itself did not hold my interest. I had to force myself to keep reading.I almost gave up several times. If you only read one John Grisham book, this is not it. Try "The Street Lawyer" or "The Chamber".

Summary: Certainly not his best.
Review: Luckily this was not my first Grisham book I'd read. Although the plot is original it is too unrealistic to get any points. From the very start where some CIA guy thinks he'll just choose the next president on his own (and the would-be candidate just agrees - sort of, on the spot) I thought it made the whole story a bit too cheap. Based on this shaky ground Grisham's talent for story telling can't save the novel. The only part of the book that I found interesting was the way Grisham describes the way of CIA snooping around and following back the trail to find the Brethren. But that was just about it. The plot was unrealistic and the story lacked a real hero or at least someone from whose eyes one would like to follow the story - as a matter of fact there wasn't even one likable character to be found.

Accustomed to reading Grisham novels till late into the night because 'I just couldn't let go', this novel made an exception of me stopping to read it halfway only to pick it up months later 'just to finish' it off.

I think the 2-stars I gave for this book is even generous. Having read and enjoyed many of his other books I know Grisham can do a lot better than this.

Summary: An entertaining read
Review: "The Brethren" is a very good and engrossing novel! He even made politics interesting to me, which is no small feat!

The Brethren are a group of judges in a minimal security federal prison. They are extorting money from rich gay men who want to remain anonymous.

One of their victims turns out to be someone very important and well-known and this is when it becomes impossible to put the book down.

"The Brethren" is a fast-paced novel. Though it has many characters Grisham doesn't allow you to get lost. There are many different stories that he ties up nicely in the last few chapters.

A great story - superb writing - I strongly recommend it.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: not one of Grisham's best
Review: It took me awhile to get into this one. However I did manage to get hooked into the story and enjoying it. I just don't think it is one of his best works.
