Review: A friend gifted me with The Brethren and I ulitmately got through it after putting it down and thinking that, since no book could possibly be that bad, it had to get better. . . but, it did not. The Brethren is worthy of inclusion in the bottom 10 list of the worst books of all times, right below The Street Lawyer (which I bought myself and vowed I'd never buy another Grisham book). This silly silly book had nothing. Nothing. No developed central character or no plot that anyone with an IQ approaching the imbecile level, or above, would believe for a nanosecond. On the other hand, it was so pitifully bad, it was funny. I get it! Grisham's done a comedy. (It would have to improve to deserve even one star.)

Summary: COULD HAVE BEEN 100 PAGES LONGER......
Review: This is only the second book I've read by Grisham, the first being The Testament (which was not high on my list). So, bearing that in mind, I am no authority on Grisham and had no pre-conceived expectations when starting this book as a die-hard Grisham fan might have. As a result, I enjoyed it immensely. I thought the plot and the premise were better than average. The characters were convincing and their motivation plausible. Up until the last 40 pages, I was loving this book. When I am truly enjoying a book, I notice that I never look to see what page I'm on, constantly trying to figure out how many more pages I have to go. That was the case with this book. The pages just flowed. Now, I'm not stating that this is any kind of a masterpiece....but in this genre it was satisfying to me. This is one of the first times, however, where I felt that the author could have used another 100 pages to finish the book. It's almost as if he got a call from his publisher telling him that he needed the book tomorrow and Grisham had to tie all the loose ends up immediately. I found this part a total disappointment and would have given it 5 stars otherwise. After reading 366 pages, I felt I deserved a more drawn out and justified ending.

Summary: A New Style for Grisham
Review: I have read all of John's books and this is a totally different style then I'm used to. The same emphasis on legal matter, the same page turning ability, but it lacks the amount of suspense I am used to seeing from him. The plot is actually predictable right from the start.This is the story of three judges and a presidential candidate. At the begining of the story their lives are completly seperate but by the end they became intertwined as Mr. Lake gets closer and closer to the presidency. Not exactly what I was expecting from Grisham but I still loved the book because he is my favorite author.

Summary: Are you SURE this is a Grisham?
Review: Wow...talk about pre-pub hype! I admit, I bought into it expected one of his best yet and all but tore open the box when it arrived. That moment was the most exciting part about my whole "Bretheren" experience. Is this really a Grisham book? What happened? It was a struggle to maintain interest and finish. The characters are underdeveloped, the storyline tedious and the ending a complete insult to those of us who've fallen in love with Grisham's earlier work.

Review: Much anticipation but the end result was rather disappointing. The storylines were unique but lacked suspense. The ending was mundane and uneventful. I felt this was his weakest attempt at telling a story. If you must read this book try to wait for the paperback and save yourself some money.

Summary: Long Wait, Big Let Down!
Review: I am a very big Grisham fan and was waiting very unpatiently for the newest book. I found that I should have waited until it came out in paperback ( not to pay so much). I was very disappointed. It lost me from the first few chapters and was very hard to keep my attention, unlike previous novels.I kind of thought along the line that this might have been the first book he ever wrote and saved for a while but, it had great similarities to Clancy and other authors along the "Clancy" line. Although I didn't care for the book, I am waiting for the next to see if Grishiam can redeem himself and his work!

Summary: Grisham's best work in years
Review: This book is John Grisham's best work in many years. In my opinion his previous books in recent years have been weak. This story though is what I had come to expect from him. The only reason I rate this a 4 instead of a 5 is that it is a little short.
