Rating: Summary: A great book.... Review: It is a great book by John Grishan. It will capture you from the begginig until the end, no doubt about it. But sometimes in the book the author gives to much details, some of them totaly discardble. But in terms of the story, it is great. It's about three judges that are in jail for different reasons. But when they are inside they work together and have all kinds off scams against all kinds of different people to try to get money out of them. And now they have the perfect target...
Rating: Summary: DREADFUL!! Review: For those of you who rated this one highly, here's one of ....We have a bent lawyer who unknowingly has 2 CIA agents posing in his office. There are a multitude of hidden cameras filming the lawyer day and night and yet when he goes to the prison the CIA only put a mic in his briefcase which ... is supposed to be as big as a golf ball in this day and age. All the time reading it I was thinking, why haven't they wired him all over? A team of crack CIA operatives are watching this pathetic drunk and yet he eludes him - but still ... for some unfathomable reason. while the real 'crooks' somehow don't get knocked off by the CIA and in the bargain get 2 million dollars each. It's bloody rubbish!!! And childish. In fact, the plot would insult a 12 year old. No star. Dreadful!!
Rating: Summary: Return of Grisham Review: I have read each and everyone of John Grisham's books. I found that this particular novel visited Mr. Grisham's older writing styles. While it was not as good as A Time to Kill or some of his earlier works, I found that this book kept me interested not only in the plot, but in the characters as well. It is a definite page turner and a must read for all Grisham fans.
Rating: Summary: I like John Grisham books, but... Review: I would really give this one 3 1/2 stars, I guess. Of course, the plot is suspenseful. What I have a problem with (and I probably have had the same problem with the last two of his books) is that the story gets good and then he just ends the book. It's like he realized that is was plenty of pages so we'll just end it on the next page. Great book - just don't care for the abrupt ending.
Rating: Summary: I LIKE THIS BOOK! Review: I have discovered John Grisham recently and "The Brethren" is the first book of his that I've read. I LOVED IT!!! This book rocks!!!! Yay John Grisham.
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable! Review: It only took about 75 pages for me to wonder how this book could have been published and why would anyone pay 20 plus dollars to purchase it. To say that the plot was paper thin would be kind, this plot was totally unbelievable. Why would Grisham think that we would believe that the CIA director could tell the Presidential Candidate about secret mass murders but he couldn't tell the Candidate what the CIA had found out about his personal life. Give me a break. My advice is to not waste your money or your time.
Rating: Summary: I should have known Review: This was my 3rd Grisham book and without a doubt, my last. More paper thin characters, fast-food delivery and implausible activity. Nobody in the novel is likeable; nobody is believable. I'm not kidding when I say I read this book only when I wanted to fall asleep. How does this guy keep selling books?
Rating: Summary: Something's Changed Review: Somewhere around ten years ago, before studying English as an undergrad and grinding through law school, I remember reading The Firm and The Pelican Brief. I remember absolutely loving those two books. So, after reading so much "classic" literature, and now law, I decided to go back and try just reading for fun once again. It had been so long. I have to admit it was fun to read quickly. I devoured this novel in a very short amount of time. But I also have to admit I was very disappointed. The primary question I was left with was, who cares? I almost couldn't wait for this book to end. After about halfway through the novel, I had figured out primarily what was going to happen and, more importantly, I had also figured out that I didn't care one iota about a single character in this book. The main characters in this book are (1) a presidential candidate who is a complete puppet of the CIA and who has sold his soul in order to become president, (2) the director of the CIA who stereotypically is a crusty old guy in a wheelchair with a paranoia over future wars (that he is helping create, by the way), (3) three ex-judges now in federal prison for various crimes who are now committing extortion on a grand scale of otherwise innocent people who happen to have homosexual weaknesses, and (4) a lawyer who is doing the judges' dirty work in violation of numerous federal and state laws, not to mention the entire canon of legal ethics. The only thing that kept me going was anticipation of some very exciting Grisham ending. Fittingly, it wasn't there. Everything fit together very predictably and undramatically. In short, save yourself the trouble of reading this bomb.
Rating: Summary: Choose your pen-pals wisely! Review: This is the first Grisham book I have read and I plan to read more of his work. Some reviewers thought the plot was too thin and that the characters weren't adequately developed, etc., etc. However, I read for entertainment and relaxation so an elaborate plot and complex characters aren't necessary for me. Yes, I was able to figure out the plot early into the book, but it was still interesting to see how it unfolded. As for those who fail to find a protagonist/antagonist relationship, I think the author left it up to the reader to decide who the protagonist is-- there could be a different one for each reader, depending on your background and personal values. Grisham's writing style (at least in this book) is easy-to-read, entertaining, and lacking the profanity that so many authors think is necessary in order to tell a story. This book is good for a quick, entertaining read and I enjoyed it very much.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Review: Loved it. This is one of Grisham's best. It's as good as The Client and The Firm. As good as Pelican Brief. It reads very quickly. The two very distinct plots ultimately weave together into a Jim Dandy of a story. This is airplane reading at it's finest. I spent two 4AM nights speeding through this one. Superb plotting, excellent pacing, believable AND memorable characters. Enjoy! Kevin Hogan, ...
