Summary: Wait for the paperback to come out!
Review: For anyone who is a fan of Baldacci's suspense novels, this may fall far short of your expectations! I grabbed this one hot off the press because of my preference for Baldacci's literary susspense style.

After recognizing Wish You Well was a complete departure from his previous works, I decided to keep an open mind, since it appeared Baldacci has been wanting to try a different genre. I came away disappointed, however, in what I considered a rather pat, shallow story. Though the potential was great and the characters worthy of exploration, David falls short, leaving me with a feeling that it will take him additional attempts before he can touch the human spirit via this type of novel. All of the ingredients were present in the novel--it just didn't go deep enough. Perhaps David tried to put too many of his ideas into one book and wound up doing only an adequate job. I wouldn't discourage him from future attempts, as he'll undoubtably get better at this type of writing. In the meantime, I hope he returns to the suspense writing for which he's earned an admirable reputation.

Review: A real enjoyment to read.

Summary: Heartwarming
Review: This is a big change from the usual Baldacci story line. It only proves to me that he is an exceptionally fine author to be able to write a beautifully captivating tale so totally different from his other fine works. One can easily tell from his writing that this subject matter is very close to his heart as he unfolds the tale of this unique family of rural Virginia. At times, I found the story almost too simplistic, yet that uncomplicated style gave it a warm feeling as one became absorbed in the episodes of the family. This is the kind of book you'll finish and feel good about having read it. Loveable characters, family values, morals and good insight into the lives of people who call this area home. It is so very refreshing to read such a story!

Summary: disappointed
Review: Have read all of Baldacci's books. I'm a fan of his suspensful novels, and am surprised and disappointed to find him straying so far off from what got him there. Seemed like a simplistic story to me, rather than the intrigue that he's so good at.

Summary: A change from the author's usual books
Review: When I picked up David Baldacci's "Wish you Well" I didn't know what to expect. I had read "The Winner", "Total Control" and "Saving Faith" so I think I was expecting something more along those lines. Instead, what I got was a touching book about hope and love. The kind of love that a child has for a parent. Pure love. The description of the mountains of Virginia where the story takes place was so real, that I could literally visualize it. At various points in the story I wanted to reach out and give Lou and Oz hugs...something I felt they were so desperately needing.

The outcome of the book was what I expected to a degree. The story does not disappoint and is now one of my favorite books of the year!

Well done Mr. Baldacci. You have impressed me again.

Summary: Nostalgic and Real
Review: Although my Mom has been encouraging me to read David Baldacci for a while, this is the first of his books I have read. I could not put it down. I grew up in a time just as the world was becoming much more fast-paced. My favorite memories are those of the times I spent with my Granny enjoying the "simple" things of life. I also learned some of the ways of survival in the rural areas. This novel took me back to those days and reminded me so much of my Granny. It was a novel that touched my heart. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Hooks you from the first page
Review: In 1940s New York City, twelve-year-old Louisa Mae "Lou" Cardinal hero-worships her father, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer. Lou's dream is to become as highly regarded as he is, but she is unaware of how little money her dad Jack earns. Considered by critics one of the best authors of his generation, Jack is considering Hollywood in order to feed his family of four.

Lou's idyllic world crashes when her beloved father dies in a car accident. With her mother in shock, Lou and her younger brother Oz are displaced and move to their great-grandmother's remote Virginia farm. The two siblings begin to heal, but a new fight to save their new home is on the horizon.

WISH YOU WELL is a powerful character-driven historical novel that provides the audience a look at the bone marrow of emotions of the key players during tragedy. Readers will take to heart Lou, Oz, their mom, and their great-grandmother. The support cast augments the tale with even deeper glimpses of the Cardinals. Although David Baldacci overdoes the melodrama and reverts to a well-written courtroom climax, WISH YOU WELL is a great look at daily survival during a period of intense grief and displacement.

Summary: A look at the Virginia Mountains
Review: Baldacci has changed his writing style for "Wish you Well". I must say that I purchased the book with doubt. I have read every book that he has written, and reading what this one was about, I thought it would be boring and dull. His published works have had mystery and violence, but never giving a clue to the answers until the last chapter. This undertaking has a wonderful, gentle style, that reviews the hardships and problems of life in the Virginia mountains in the era portrayed. It has the drawing power from page to page, to find what happens next in the life of the characters. The character of "Diamond", revealed intellegence, whimsy, fun and survival skills that came from knowledge beyond "book learning." One chapter lead to another to discover if our characters could the hardness of life in the mountains. I believe it is a book for all ages.

Summary: Pleasurable
Review: Pleasurable would have to be word that describes reading this book. The characters, the setting, the story--all put together in a way that makes reading it enjoyable. It tugs at your heart and stirs your emotions. I really hated for it to end. Though this is not like his other books, I hope that he will write another like this sometime in the future.
