Rating: Summary: A big message in a little package... Review: We should all be so lucky as to have our own Stargirl enter our lives, to recognize her when she speaks to us, and wise enough to listen to her message! What I was really intrigued and touched by was the feeling I got that Leo was, in some way, a part of Jerry Spinelli as a young person, and that there was really was a "Stargirl" in his life when he was Leo's age. I first discovered Mr. Spinelli several years ago when I read Maniac Magee. Wringer and The Library Card absolutely confirmed my status as a devoted fan of his work. Although his books are shelved in the young adult or children's section of bookstores, I believe that his books defy sole classification. Any adult or young person who is interested in quality fiction will find much to love about Jerry Spinelli's books. Stargirl is a delightful celebration of nonconformity, a book guaranteed to make the reader smile and think about how we are all connected to one another, and think about how each of us makes an impact on the people whose lives we touch. An excellent book - don't miss it, it could be a contender for next year's Newbery.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful author Review: I have read many of Jerry Spinelli's books in the past, and while all of them seem to trail on the same subject, each has a great plot and twist at the end. I am happy to see Spinelli's story focusing on a girl for a change, when most of his books in the past have been about boys (Crash, Maniac Magee, Wringer, etc)
Rating: Summary: an honest & entertaining look at nonconformity Review: Another winner from the award-winning author, Jerry Spinelli! Stargirl was home-schooled up until her first day of high school, but her uniqueness goes far beyond that. At first, the other students are just curious; then they become infatuated with Stargirl's individuality. She is competely oblivious to what anyone else thinks about her, and even when they start to act like her, it really doesn't affect her. Then, the other students slowly turn on her. There is one person who stands by Stargirl, and he encourages her to "fit in." She does so for a while, but eventually finds she has to be true to who she is, regardless of how other people perceive her. Along the way, she teaches a boy about love and acceptance. This story is fresh, honest, and entertaining. Spinelli has a winner! I love the cover, too.
Rating: Summary: To conform or not to conform, that is the question. Review: Stargirl, with a name like that she would have to be an original and she is. No one at Mica High has ever met anyone so non-conformant to the group norm. Stargirl sings happy birthday to student in the cafeteria while playing her ukulele. She drops money on the sidewalk for little kids to find. She cheers for BOTH teams at sports tournaments. Can anyone this selfless and caring survive the pressure to "follow the unwritten school rules" of behavior? Will her individuality be squashed or will the town of Mica, Arizona never be the same?Karen Woodworth-Roman
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: Stargirl was such a great book and to think it was "predictable", f u cuz if the book was predictable then i might was well b typing on a monkey's butt!
I think only highly avid readers can fully grasp and appreciate the meaning of stargirl. It's about how to accept a person for who they are, even if the rest of the world is not ready to accept or adapt to such an extroadinary person. It's about knowing the person for who they are, not their actions or how they dress or why they sing happy birthday to people at lunchtime. I think Stargirl was a fantastic, heart-warming book and I encourage readers that enjoyed Maniac Magee and FLiPpEd to read Stargirl.
