Rating: Summary: I love Stargirl Review: The book "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli is awesome! I could hardly put the book down and couldn't wait for the next thing to happen. Jerry Spinelli is an excellent author, the way he describes everything--the sentences are so smooth and descriptive. This story takes place in Mica, Arizona at Mica High School, where Leo, a 17 year old guy goes as well as "Stargirl." They are in 11th grade and it is Stargirl's first year ever in a public school. She is very outgoing, unique, and very, very different from everyone else, and the cool thing is she doesn't care about what other people say or think about her, she's her own person and very in touch with herself. Leo, on the other hand, blends in with the crowd and he's very ordinary and he does care about what everybody says and thinks. They end up meeting and getting a little close and becoming real good friends. He starts to worry about everybody's gossip and tries to change her. She does it for a while, but she doesn't like it and goes back to her old self. Then Leo is left to choose between being "popular" or being happy. I really, honestly liked this book, and the best thing about it is the whole point of the book. It means be yourself and don't worry about about other people's opinions--if you like you for you, then don't change at all. But if you're not happy with yourself then you're probably not being true to yourself. The book is really good and well written. Try it out.
Rating: Summary: Boring... Review: Someone said they recommend this book to ages 10-14? I hope they all take offence. I lent this book to my little sister, 11, and she went, "Uhhh, Megan? No offence, but this is pretty stupid." And I agree with her 100%. Stargirl seemed to be full of contradictions. I tried, but she never really came off the pages. One would expect someone as different as she is to be more straightforward, but she came off, as another reader has pointed out, elusive and a bit flighty. People are people, to say the least, and every action has a motivation. For Stargirl, I was left thinking, 'Umkay, why'd she do that?' None of the dialogue was very believable, and the writing structure was oddly built. The story was somehow set against the wrong background, and I can't really describe it more than that. Stargirl came out as cheesy. She wasn't ever portrayed as stupid, so one would assume she knew she was different and that other kiddies were calling her weird. And then, one would assume, she didn't care. But then she changes everything because of what Leo tells her? Stargirl seems more like the one who would smile, and say in some fashion, "I don't want to fit in-I don't care. I want to be me." But she changes everything? Why? The whole book just came off as very flat-but hey... Someone might like it.
Rating: Summary: A Year in the Life of A Star Review: Stargirl just came to Mica High School. Everybody thinks she is weird because she carries her ukulele and dresses funny. The people who are keeping an eye on her are Leo and Kevin, her two best friends. They are always following her around. Stargirl is very different and that is why she is my favorite character. I could really relate myself to Stargirl. She does not do what everybody else does. Stargirl and I are alike because we both have different style's. I liked the book alot. I especially like the part when they describe Stargirl and when Leo and Kevin follow her around. I would not change anything about the book. I would recommend this book to all young teens in shcool who are having trouble with mean kids. This is great and inspiring to kids. This book shows you how everbody can be different.
Rating: Summary: ^stargirl^ Review: ok stargirl is very touching i mean the way leo and stargirl like each other. but the only flaw to me is when stargirl has to move away but he rest of the book is 100% gold. read and love it. retell and let others love it.
Rating: Summary: Out of the Ordinary Review: Stargirl is a very unique book. It is about a girl named Stargirl, who is slightly different from everyone else. The author captures your attention by using a storyline that could actually happen. Stargirl moves to a new scool where she is shunned by her classmates because she doesn't act like everyone else. When she starts to like this one boy, eveyone starts to make fun of her even more. This is a good book and I strongly reccommend it.
Rating: Summary: 5-Star-Girl Review: Jerri Spinelli has done it again, along with other greats such as Jason and Marcy, The Library Card and There's a Girl in my Hammerlock comes Stargirl; a story the new girl at Mica High. In a school where everything is the same, clothes, hair, and on word can describe it... normal. But Susan Caraway(a.k.a. Stargirl) is not normal, in fact if there is such a thing she is just the opposite. Told from the view of Leo Borlock who has become infatuated with Stargirl from the moment he laid eyes on her. But he, nor anyone else, can figure her out or put their finger on her. She acts so out of the ordinary that no one knows what to think of her. She wears long, flowing dresses when the style is jeans and torso showing T-shirts and plays the ukulele singing happy birthday to people in the lunchroom, always with her pet rat Cinnamon resting in her backpack. At first, all the students (except Leo) think Stargirl is weird and don't pay her much attention. But when she does start to draw attention, resident snob Hillary Kimble tries to make everyone hate her by sabotaging Stargirl's appearance on Leo's show "Hot Seat." Although all of this happens to her and she knows she is not popular, she is still unwilling to conform to what is normal. But during a football game she impresses the entire school by doing crazy cheers, flips and rooting for the team. Then suddenly, she has friends. But again her unconformity shows when she begins to root for the other team and checks on their injured player. Mica High's students cannot stand for this and hate her again. Stargirl is shunned and Leo along with her. Although Leo loves Stargirl and knows she has to be who she is inside, he cannot stand being an outcast any longer. He tries to convince her to be the one thing she is not..."normal." As this story of individuality continues, first love, friendship, and personality shine through. It is one for those who just wish to feel good and should be nominated for an award.
Rating: Summary: Not just for teenagers! Review: This story of a unique, strong and proud teenage girl is not just a great read for teenagers. In Stargirl, Spinelli has introduced a character who is not afraid to be herself, who is unencumbered by others' opinions of her, and whose individuality of spirit is an inspiration. It's rare to meet this kind of female protaganist; kudos to Jerry Spinelli for bringing Stargirl to life!
Rating: Summary: Mike e Review: This book is about a girl named stargirl. She is very strange and weird all the other kids like her a bit in the beginning then she got on this show called the hot seat at her school everyone there started asking her questions about her life and why she was soo weird and goofy but she did not really care. She was a cheerleader at her school when at the championship game of her school she cheered for both teams and everyone got mad at her and suddenly someone through a tomato at her and that's when everything started going down hill. The people that hosted the show hot seat at her school where Kevin and Leo, Leo started falling in love with her and started liking her a lot but once they where together he got ignored and disliked by everyone else but his friend. I liked this book a lot it was really good and fun to read it had some dramatic moments but was real good out of a ten I would rate it a solid 8, I really liked how the author described the characters like "she seemed marooned in the sea of staring, buzzing faces". I would recommend this book to people ages 10-14 its really good book if people like a little of everything like drama suspense this book kind of has it all its also male and females would enjoy reading this book. I really enjoyed reading this book. Michael.E
Rating: Summary: What A Great Book! Review: This book was really great for many reasons. This book is unlike any other book because it shows what really happens in the present day, and so parents and teachers could see what it is like to be a kid our age. It also shows individuality because Stargirl, for example, likes to change her name when she gets tired of it. Leo tries to fit in but he figures out that he really likes Stargirl and Stargirl really likes him too. This book is very fun to read because you never know what will happen next and because there are so many changes in this book. It is also very interesting that Stargirl doesn't care what anyone thinks or says about her, but Leo wants her to be part of the group and be popular. Leo likes Stargirl, but he doesn't like being seen with her because no one will talk to him any more. Leo puts Stargirl on his news show at school called "The Hot Seat", and it turns out to be a very crazy show. This book is great for anyone and any age group. I strongly recommend that you buy this book.
Rating: Summary: Making Choices Review: This book is about a girl and a boy. This girl's real name is Susan Caraway but she refers to herself as Stargirl. She is what most students at Misa High would call "Wierd". This boy's name is Leo Borlock. He also narrates the story. Leo both hates her and loves her at the same time. I like the way the main character in the story (Stargirl) is so different and she does not care what other people think of her. I did not like the way that Leo tried to change the way she acted and the way she was just because she was different and he was ashamed to be with her. This book is fairly easy to understand. I did not have trouble comprehending this story. This would not be a book for teenage boys. This book relates to a very different teenage girl and if you ask me this would be a very good book for a teenage girl.
