Rating: Summary: 5 Stars For Stargirl Review: I received this book as a gift from my Mom, one week before taking a 10 hour flight to Italy for a two week vacation. "I liked the cover!" she said. "Sure, Mom," I thought. Nevertheless, I snuck a peek (against her wishes) before we left so I could get in the amount of pages I needed to complete that semester. What I found amazed me! This book is quite possibly my favorite of all time. It documents the life of a boy named Leo Borlock, a typical teenager at just about the most typical high-school you could ever imagine...and the girl he falls in love with, Susan "Stargirl" Caraway. Stargirl's personality, one of individuality and salvation through humor and a remarkable zest for life, is "shunned," as Leo puts it, by his and Stargirl's fellow classmates. I don't want to give up the ending, but let's put it this way: I was reading this book under my desk the following day.
Rating: Summary: Brilliantly Written Review: Stargirl whose legal name is Susan Caraway is different from all the students at Mica High. She strums her ukelele in the school cafeteria to anybody having a birthday, bring a rat to school called Cinnamon, dresses in Victorian dresses of all styles, cheers for the opposing basketball team, cries at funerals she wasn't even invited to and many others. At first the school totally accepts her until she helps an opposing basketball's star player after he gets injured. The school blames her for their loss. She gets shunned by the whole school except for Leo who loves her deeply. However the shunning by the rest of his classmates catches up to him and he can't choose between her or the whole school. That when he uses his love to make her change and ultimately almost destroy her and her spirit. This was a great book and everyone Jerry Spinellii did a great job depicting a girl who we should all try to copy. We should all remember not to let others ruin our own spirit.
Rating: Summary: Where Did This Girl Come From? Review: The book, Star Girl is one of my favorite books I read this year. It is hilarious, I laughed out loud in some parts. My friends didn't know what i was laughing about. It is about this girl, some people thought she came from another planet or something. I thought it was kinda weird of her knowing everybodys birthdays. Oh and I didn't like that Hilari girl. You could tell that she was prejudice. It was really cute when Star Girl started liking someone. Everybody didnt know what to think. This is a really great book I think everyone should read it.
Rating: Summary: StarGirl-*girl* Review: My book review is on Star Girl by Jerry Spinelli, published 2000. The main characters in this book are Leo and Star Girl. In this book Star Girl is a kind teenager who is always singing birthday songs and always thinking about anyone but herself, and as a cheerleader she cheers for the other team. Leo, the one telling the story, falls in love with Star girl and they begin to date, but the problem is that Star girl is rejected and people do not accept her at Mica High. Because Leo is dating her he is rejected also. He desperately wants her to realize whats going on around her. Once he tells her she leaves and comes back with a new image. Curly hair a toe ring and lipstick. But still the school doesn't accept her. Star Girl wins a prize and is expecting everyone in the school to be there but only the principal and her best friend comes. She is deeply disappointed and gives up. When the Spring dance arrives, Leo does not take her. When she comes she is the most beautiful there. She dances for hours in a line into the desert and everywhere. After the dance she left Arizona. Leo never saw her again, but recieves a birthday present from her. I think the moral of the story is to be yourself. This book inspired me in so many ways. This book is incredible I would give it a 5 out of 5 rating. I reccomend this book to ages 10 and up.
Rating: Summary: Stargirl... enchanting & profoundly moving. Review: Stargirl Caraway enters the scene of Mica Area High School wearing a long-skirted pioneer-style dress, carrying a canvas bag, and strumming a ukelele. Students at MAHS, who typically don't express themselves as individuals at all, find that they can't tear their eyes, or their minds, off of this strange new tenth-grader. By December, high-schoolers of all grades and social statuses are surrounding Stargirl everywhere. For a few weeks, Stargirl is the most popular person in school. Then, things start to get rough. People start noticing how Stargirl cheers for the other team on the basketball team just as enthusiastically as for the MAHS team. Only one person stays by her side, Leo Borlock, who has just discovered that he loves Stargirl desperately. Follow Leo and Stargirl through their journey as a couple and be surprised by the ending of this book that can only be further described by one word: indescribable. Jerry Spinelli has penned the most captivating story of individuality ever imagined.
Rating: Summary: Very special Review: Originally I borrowed this from the library. Halfway through it I bought my own copy, and one for my niece. This is a story about a girl called Stargirl. She has been home tutored for most of her life and has no idea of conformity. She is herself, through and through. She wears pioneer type dresses, no make up, meditates, knows peoples birthdays, makes people feel good about themselves. At the start the majority of the school applauds her individuality and even flatters her when they copy her odd ways. But slowly they see her individuality as a hindrance and begin to turn on her. Leo, the 16 year old narrator of the book finds himself as her boyfriend, and as such is completely alienated from the rest of the school. It dawns on him that he has to choose, Stargirl or his friends and respect. This is probably one of the best books I have read for an awful long time, and I read a lot of books! I am keeping my copy on my bookshelf for my children to read, to teach them to applaud individuality, not discourage.
Rating: Summary: Excellent beach book Review: A very fast read, and fun story. Everyone has met or seen someone like Stargirl, the kind of teen who is her own leader and follows nobody. Then there's Leo, who is more like your average teen, worried about what others think, etc. I liked getting swept up into their world, yet in many ways it's the same world we all inhabit. Other fast reads like this one: Durable Goods, and An Egg on Three Sticks.
Rating: Summary: Spinelli has NO taste Review: Oh my gosh, this book was awful. It was so bad I wanted to cry. I'm an avid reader and an accomplished writer, so I know what I'm talking about. It seems like Spinelli just finally ran out of ideas...and you can tell with this book. People rave that's it's inspirational and beautiful, but they only say that because it's different and they really don't know what they think of it. The truth is, it's totally out of whack. Stargirl is a very weak character, and Leo is weaker. All this book does is shows how awful and cruel people are today. Don't waste your money on this book. Read Harry Potter instead. Spinelli's books are a waste of paper.
Rating: Summary: Mom & Daughter Both think: Stargirl's Cool! Review: My daughter and I got this audio book to listen to in the car on a long trip. I (Mom) chose it because the main character reminded me of my daughter---kind of different than the other girls, feels left out sometimes, but very creative and a free spirit. My daughter is kind of hard to please, so I wasn't sure what she would think. She loved it!!! I liked it too. She says: she liked how Stargirl was connected with the earth. She also thinks it had some funny parts--like the porcupine necktie! She says "It was awesome". My daughter hoped there was a sequel. We both recommend this as a great book for Mom & daughter trips.
Rating: Summary: beautiful Review: about a girl who finds a way into everybody's heart and touches the life of everyone that she meets! I want to be a Star Girl! She makes life beautiful :)
