Rating: Summary: Mercer fan disappointed Review: Jack Dubrul is one of those author's that I buy as soon as they come out. I've read all his stuff. Loved 'em. That being said, this book was a disappointment. I came close to giving up on it maybe 3/4 of the way through, but decided to muck on til the end. It really seemed disjointed, probably because of the 'Mercer falls in love' storyline that pop up just in time to kill whatever action is going on. I have no idea why some authors decide to do this. "Broadening the character" perhaps? Don't know. Don't care. I want ACTION!!! Please go back to the Mercer adventures that were pure adrenaline. To Jack Du Brul: I will still buy the next installment, but please return to the old way of writing, lest you receive the 'Cussler Curse." I used to buy all his books first edition hardback. After Fire Ice (which has a little something in common with Deep Fire Rising, by the way) I won't buy his stuff even in paperback.
Rating: Summary: Dubrul slippage Review: Jack Dubrul's latest Philip Mercer adventure Deep Fire Rising shows some plot slippage analogous to his earhquake causing fault lines. In his latest novel Dubrul interjects far too much religious mysticism and romance into his usual scientifically based thrillers. Mercer, a mining engineer/secret agent is once again recruited by deputy national security advisor Admiral Ira Lasko for a clandestine project based in the heavily guarded Area 51. Experimentation in the creation of a Star Trek-like transporter requires Mercer's subterranean mining expertise. This secret enterprise has created a seismic disturbance without the apparent occurrence of a volcano or earthquake. This anomaly comes to the attention of a group called the Order. The Order is a reclusive group of Tibetan monks who monitor cataclysmic geologic events and are capable of predicting future disasters. A radical offshoot of the Order headed by young megalomaniac Luc Nyugen is bent on using its power for world domination and eventually butts heads with Mercer. Nyugen's stunning and sensual sister, Tisa joins forces with Mercer to thwart her brothers murderous ambitions and becomes his love interest. The plot briskly moves on as Mercer strives to save the world from destruction. Dubrul, in his forward acknowledges that he strays from his normal format and requests reader feedback. I'm going to e-mail him to tell him to go back to previous successful style.

Rating: Summary: never finished Review: Maybe it's just me, but I have never finished a book from Jack Du Brul. I am a teacher of geology and was excited as to the prospect of a fiction book on topics of geology. I have tried three of Du Brul's books and never finished one. The whisky guzzling and sly humor(?) was too much. There is little character development in terms of getting an idea of what the person is all about, and the narrow escapes are just too much This coming from an avid Clive Cussler Fan!.
Rating: Summary: OK beach read Review: the hero Mercer, a mining engineer/secret agent is recruited for a clandestine project based in the heavily guarded Area 51. Experimentation in the creation of a Star Trek-like transporter requires Mercer's subterranean mining expertise. This secret enterprise has created a seismic disturbance without the apparent occurrence of a volcano or earthquake. The story takes off from here and is loaded with action though a little thin on character development. Those who are familiar with Clive Cussler and his Dirk Pitt Novels are the target audience. This is ok beach reading but do not expect much more. Also recommended: 'A Tourist in the Yucatan' same genre with more realisim and still plenty of action.
Rating: Summary: EXCITING LISTENING Review: Those with a scientific bent will be especially drawn to "Deep Fire Rising," an adventure tale with elements of earth science and state of the art technology. Multi talented voice performer J. Charles offers a commanding reading. His 40 plus years of theatre experience stand him in good stead as he captains listeners on a harrowing course perhaps leading to Armageddon. Geologist Philip Mercer has been retained to explore and excavate caverns deep under the sea, beneath Area 51. Little does he know that as his probing continues he is drawing closer to the plans and expectations of a group of monks. It is their determination that the world will come to an end, and they will do everything in their power to see that their prediction is correct. Of course, Mercer has an attractive assistant - Tisa Nguyan. Their task is a formidable one - to prevent the world's destruction. Exciting listening! - Gail Cooke

Rating: Summary: Good read Review: Though I've only read a few of this authors books, I did enjoy this particular one thoroughly. Yes, it was a lot of information to take in, but I felt that the characters were well rounded and the storyline was solid. If you're interested in fast paced reading, action, suspense and a little romance on the side, this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic story from a master of adventure Review: Tired of the same old plots with the same old characters? Well, my friends Phillip Mercer is the perfect fix for all us action/thriller junkies. Mercer has taken over! More over Jack Ryan, Dirk Pitt, and Kurt Austin! There's a new hero on the block! He's kicking tail and taking names. Once again Jack DuBrul has raised the bar, kicked it into high gear, and let it all hang out. Enjoyed every page!! Keep 'em coming Jack!
