He's been kicked out of every school in Rhode Island and his parent were took off to jail so he had to move to 'the Boonies' of North Carolina with his Grandfather. He got kicked out of Traybridge Middle School in lest than a 3-week period so his grandfather sent him to live with the Applewhite and go to their home school that they call "The Creative Academy". If you want to know more about "Surviving the Applewhites" you need to read it! It's a awesome good book. Its excellent for kids in middle school cause there is alot of kids in middle school that are just like Jake Semple! Enjoy the book I hope this is helpful!

Summary: surviving
Review: Surviving the Applewhites is among the most fabulous book I have ever read in my life so far. Jake is a juvenile delinquent, who gets kicked out of going to any school in Rhode Island. When his parents get thrown in jail for drugs, his grandpa lets him move in. The first day he is there he meets the Applewhites. They home school Jake. They try and teach him they way of life. After awhile he becomes a nice guy and doesn't do all the bad he had done before.
Surviving the Applewhites means that you should never be a bad influence in life. You should always have a plan for the future, like becoming a writer. Never care about what other people think of you. You are what you are and you should live life to the fullest. "Applewhites, he said, shouldn't be required to do what other people did just because other people did it-Applewhites weren't like other people."(Tolan pg.17)
If I was in Jake's spot I would kiss the old life goodbye and start acting better and never burning down another school. And I would have came up with my own plan for school because E.D.'s would have been regular hard school stuff and I would want my own to work up to. E.D. always needs a challenge t become the best she can be.
This book is similar to my life because I tried to be the cool person and always getting into trouble and I'm into the hole eyebrow piercing thing and tattoos so I could relate to Jake in this story.

I would recommend this book to everyone who thinks there is nothing for them in life and if they are always in trouble and don't think there is a way out. Believe me there is a way to be a good responsible teenager and for adults too. Everyone needs a chance or two.

Summary: Survivng The Applewhites Book Review
Review: Surviving the Applewhites, is a witty story about a
family out of the ordinary. Each member has his or her
own individual talent and come together at the end of
the book to put on a unique version of the Musical The
Sound Of Music. In this story, the Applewhites except
a boy into their home named Jake Semple. Jake has been
kicked out of many institutions and schools and this
home school called "The Creative Academy", is his last
hope. The setting of the story is modern time, which

makes all the mishaps in the book believable. Jake is a
unique character because like many teenage boys, he is
rebellious and causes some problems. The dialogue used
in this story provides the reader with a clear,
descriptive insight to the characters. For example,
the youngest Applewhite boy named Destiny, is a
typical, curious little boy who just wants to be
treated like everyone else. He especially likes Jake
and is always following him around. Destiny likes to
ask Jake all types of questions, and even dies his
hair to look just like Jake. The words and vocabulary
used in this book are precise and mainly to the point.
It is a very easy book to read and follow. The reader
can see the use of figurative language in the story,
when the schoolroom Jake's classes are held in, is
being described. A banner decorating the wall reads,
"Education is an adventurous quest for meaning of the
life, involving an ability to think things through"
(pg 27).
In the story, there are many observations and
dilemmas that occur that almost kill the plot. It also
kills the major dramatic question of the book which
is, Will the group all pull together, over come all
the problems that have happened and still put on this
modernized version of The Sound of Music? This makes
the reader want to continue reading to the end, to see
if this question is answered. The pacing and style are
very appropriate in this book. Each event proceeds
after the next one and one event leads into another,
in an organized manner.
This book could be enjoyed and appreciated by various
groups of people. It would mainly be found in an upper
elementary school or middle school classroom. There
are references made in the book and some concepts
talked about, that show this book needs to be used
with older children. It also is a neat book because it
gives a great background and incorporates the famous
musical, "The Sound Of Music". I always loved that
musical and I am sure many people do too. Mentioning
The Sound Of Music is a great eye catcher to have in
the summary of the book, because someone might see
this and automatically pick up the book because he or
she likes this musical. This book can be used in a
classroom, to teach children not to give up and that
everyone has a special talent inside them. He or she
just needs the opportunity and time to show it.

Summary: Surviving the Applewhites
Review: Surviving the Applewhites
Stephanie S. Tolan Scholastic, Inc.

Do you like funny books? Funky plots? Then you will probably love
Surviving the Applewhites! In this story, great for older or younger
kids, you'll meet Jake Semple, the "bad kid from the city", who comes to
stay at Wits End, a furniture factory, gallery, studio, goat compound,
Creative Academy, as well as the home of the most chaotic, artistic and
forgetful family you'll ever meet, the Applewhites. The Applewhites

started their home school after one of their daughters, Cordeila, was
told in her science class that she could not paint a zebra black and
purple. Her dad, Randolph, said that real science requires creativity
and individuality, and pulled all his kids out of school the next day.
So that's how the Creative Academy started, a place where pretty much
each kid runs their own curriculum, doing math online, but otherwise
pursuing their talents and such. E.D., one of the younger Applewhites,

about Jake's age, is, well, different from the rest of her family. She
is less artistic, and likes being organized, and was not at all eager
about having Jake come to stay with them. Her project, now only
partially her's, since Jake came along, is a butterfly project,
photographing and cataloging every butterfly in the state. She feels
like it's being taken away from her when Jake finds her long hunted
Spangled Fitlery, which seems to only add to her troubles. Randolph is
directing a musical in town, the Sound of Music and he finds Jake a role
in it! Then the other people working at the theater all quit, angry
their own children weren't picked for the cast, and the Applewhites end
up taking the jobs. But, that's not all. Soon the shows been canceled,
and that's when the Applewhites take matters into their own hands...

The main characters in this book were:
Jake Semple: a punk, who smokes and swears and wears his hair in red
spikes. He supposedly got kicked out of every other school in Rhode
Island, and burned his last school down. His parents are in jail for
growing marijuana in their basement.
The Applewhites:
Sybil: the mother, a writer, supposedly working on the "Great American
Novel".
Randolph: the father, and a director with a temper.
Archie: the uncle, who makes, strange, unique furniture.
Lucille: the aunt, who is a poet and meditates a lot.
Zedediah: the grandfather, a rather weird character, easily amused.
Hal: a sculptor who lives in his room.
Cordeila: a dancer, and choreographer.
E.D. : short for Edith Wharton, a smart, stuffy sort of girl, wanting
things predictable and in order.
Destiny: a small, loud, mischievous boy who asks lots of questions.
Winston: the stubborn, old doggy.

I thought that this was an excellent book. It had a cute story, with
twists and turns, humor, and it really made it's points. I think that
some of the elements were friendship, stereotypes, and how even the
worst sorts of problems can have a good side. I think that it's a
wonderful book, a wacky realistic fiction. It has appropriate
language(despite what you may think) and is a fairly easy read. I
recommend it to all.

Summary: The Family that Fights Together...Stays Together
Review: The Applewhite's aren't your usual every-day family, every single person had some artistic talent, except for ED. ED is begining to feel alone, and then along came Jake...
Jake as ED says is a, " Tough looking kid with spikey red hair and too many piercings." I don't think he mind it either. Jake had been sent to live with his grandfather after his parents were put in jail. Jake needed a new school...after being kicked out of "all" of the ones nearby so, his social worker stuck him in the Applewhites Academy of the Arts.
As the story goes on, Jake causes problems, solves a few, gains friends, and suprises even the smartest of people. I love this book and recomend it to everyone who know how to read! <3

Summary: my favorite Book
Review: The book of the APPLEWHITES at first was really disturbing but the once I got into it, it actually got pretty good. This book is about a young kid named Jake Semple who was a pretty scary kid. People say that he burned down his old school and got kicked out of every other school in his home state. Until one day only one school would take him in one school that would try to put up with his big nuisance. I would recommend this book because it is really funny and it captures the imagination and once you get into it you can actually relate to the characters.
