Rating: Summary: School Book review Review: I read the book 1984 by George Orwell for my book report in school. This is a book targeted for an older audience than an eighth grader. Its main theme, I believe, is that we cannot let our government have too much power. The government is controlling the peoples' lives with a fist as tight as possible. If we allowed them to do this, we will fall into dispair. All in all, I didn't care for this book all too much. It was all kind of above my head. It used "Newspeak," past experiences, and things that just didn't make any sense to to me. I understand that most people really enjoyed this book. Maybe when I get older I will uderstand it more.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I love reading the clasics, and this is the best I have ever read. The characters are belivable, and the setting was wonderfull. Sure, I'm 12 and this may sound silly, but I allso enjoyed the love story. The ending was sad, but very well written and thought out. I think this book is realy wonderull and, unforunitly , Orwell didn't miss by to much.
Rating: Summary: A good read, but very depressing Review: This is one of the most depressing books I've ever read, but it does present an excellent discussion about conspiracy and power. I think that George Orwell had very little faith in mankind.
Rating: Summary: Best novel ever written Review: This book describes the internal human struggle at its fullest height. It is overpowering descibing a time when the threat of the loss of personal freedoms was everywhere and the Cold War was heating up.
Rating: Summary: Love Story Review: I viewed this book mainly as a pleasant romantic novel. But I found that the main character Winston was very arrogant and shallow though Orwell made sure that the character was very believable. Generally a very well thought out book, though some areas, such as when he is taken by the thought police are very simple and obvious and lacking in imagination. Anybody could have written that section, it lacked originality. However, I thought that the system of government was very well organised and well thought out and seems like an efficient and effective method of ruling. Although, very harsh and unfair and not something you would like to see in practise. Cold and harsh but effective. In conclusion a very romantic story that was upsetting in places. I cried when Julia was captured.
Rating: Summary: A very scary and real book... Review: 1984 was one of the best and most thought provoking books I have ever read. Is it just a matter of time before the Thought Police come for me or you. Maybe one days opinion pages like this can be used to convict me. Think about how much computers know and continue to learn about you everyday. How many cookies are in your computer. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!
Rating: Summary: 2 + 2 = 1984 Review: 1984 is a truly amazing book- probably the best I've ever read. Orwell keeps the reader interested from the very beginning by describing a world that is so different from our own, yet ironically it's a world we can all relate to. There is so much interesting detail on each page, you can ponder and debate every section of the book seemingly forever. From Winston's illegal diary in the corner of his room where he is hiding from the telescreen, to his torturous questioning in Miniluv where he is being brainwashed into thinking that two plus two is five, this is a superb book. Doubleplusgood.
Rating: Summary: not a good read -- BUT -- an excellent discussion Review: I, like so many others, was forced to read this book back in high school. I found it very hard to read & overall a big BORE. However, in class, I enjoyed the discussions the teacher & my classmates would have--interpretting the book, relating it to today's societies, etc... When I caught the movie on t.v. accidentally, I enjoyed it somewhat, so I decided to re-read the classic. Again, I found the book very boring. Reading it was like torture, but when I was done, I did appreciate Orwell's message & underlying theme. I enjoyed analyzing the book & discussing it with my peers. . (however, I'll stand by my statement that it is 294 pages of UN-EXCITEMENT). MY ADVICE: listen to other's interpretatin of it & possibly read the cliffnotes -- THEN read the novel. You'll appreciate it more.
Rating: Summary: Not just a "Political" Novel Review: As Orwell's 1984 is conventionally viewed as a "political" novel, it's value lies more in the deeper psychological meaning the book conveys, as Erich Fromm eloquently expounds in his afterword. More in this respect can the book be viewed as meaningful across both time and nation. It definitely is not just a novel for the disgruntled paranoids in our time and country as the political point of view might have it. As Fromm basically explains, the book is fundamentally an expression of the "deepest alienation in the minds of organizational man". In light of that, you might say that Dilbert lovers would appreciate the book.
Rating: Summary: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU! Review: When I read this story, I was amazed. Though it's written 50 years ago, you can find some things that really exist in our time. Maybe not as terrible but terrible enough. This story is a vision on the future. A future that may come sooner that we expect. I recommend this book to every book lover, this one you can't miss, and remember: Big brother is watching you!
