Rating: Summary: Pendergrast and Corrie -- You gotta love 'em Review: Even though it's a stretch to accept the identity and motivation of the killer (who turns out not to be a villain), this doesn't detract from the pleasure of reading this book.Pendergrast and his interactions with those around him force you to like at least two characters per book really well, tolerate some others and dislike a few with intensity. Pendergrast and Corrie in this novel, Pendergrast and Nora Kelly in "Cabinet of Curiosities," draw you into the relationship, if that's what it can be called, and you find yourself wanting the female leads to appear in the next book. You don't want to lose them. Pendergrast is too mythic to be real, the killer isn't credible, but so what. The authors tell a great story, force you to relate to the characters, and give you a spine-squeezing chill to which you want to respond by checking to see that the doors are locked.
Rating: Summary: Wow! This tale was a real page turner; not a dull moment. Review: This is my first book by these authors and I must say the storyline captivated me. Without giving anything away, I could not put this one down. The character of FBI Agent Pendergrast coupled with his novice assistant, Corrie Swanson, was quite a polarized but interesting mix. I hope to see more of Ms. Swanson in upcoming books. This thriller was riddled with everything - serial killer, interesting characters, subplots, unexpected twists and a surprise ending.
Rating: Summary: Child & Preston Continue to Deliver Great Suspense! Review: Having enjoyed The Cabinet of the Curiosities, the previous Pendergast novel, I was happy to see him back at work. Well on vacation actually, but thankfully his idea of fun is tracking down a serial killer who is terrifying the folks of a small Kansas farming town. The supporting cast is excellent, the townfolk well written, especially Pendergast's assistant, town misfit Corrie Swanson. And I'm w/the reviewers who were not disappointed by the ending, it was actually a better resolution than I'd feared. If you enjoy suspense and thriller novels this is not one to miss. I'd recommend you read the "Cabinet" first to get the full background on Pendergast and his mysterious powers. I hope to see Pendergast again in a future novel by the talented team of Child and Preston.
Rating: Summary: More Pendergast! Review: I thought STILL LIFE WITH CROWS was a "good" book, in general; what makes it "great" specifically is the character of Special Agent Pendergast. Hopefully, the authors realize they have a winner with this character and the more works they use him in, the better! I eagerly anticipate the next Pendergast novel to come out.
Rating: Summary: I suppose I set my expectations too high Review: Alright, well I have to say that this book really dissappointed me. And it's tough for me to pinpoint why because it has all the elements of a great thriller. I have read all of the Preston-Child novels and this is by far the weakest. The main reason that this book annoys me so much is that there is about a 100 pg section towards the end of the book during the chase through the catacombs that is utterly uneventful and boring. Also what annoys me is that this book follows a precise formula that these authors have done before--and better. In most major plot events this book is identical to Thunderhead. Furthermore, the gathering storm (both externally and internally) as the book reaches the climax is borderline cliche by now. We have seen this before! To a lesser extent, I do agree with other reviewers that the identity of the villain is a little stupid, but the epilogue justifies it. So if you are still unsure of whether you want to buy this book, buy it, only because of the epilogue which is extremely enjoyable reading. And it will make you think.
Rating: Summary: Actually, 4 1/2 stars.... Review: Okay, 'Relic' is still my all-time favorite, but this was great too. The writers kept the pages turning, that's the main thing. I had to deduct half a star because of the huge loose end flapping around so wildly. I HATE being baited like that, but it's good in that we all have something to look forward to, I suppose. Also, while I adore Pendergast as well, I couldn't help thinking that he's almost TOO perfect, isn't he? I mean, did he even get slightly dusty or a little bit mussed in the cave? One of the reasons why I think Indiana Jones is such a magnificent character is he's human. He curses, gets beaten up sometimes, makes mistakes, etc. And as I pondered the dismal lack of men like Pendergast in the real world, I realized that he can only really exist in fiction. He's invincible, isn't he? And I almost scoffed out loud when I got to the part about the Rolls. Okay, that's a cool car, but how practical is that? You're going to drive on dusty dirt roads in stifling heat, racing through corn fields, and you're going to do it in a Rolls Royce? Makes you wonder what his other car is... I digress. It's a great book, Pendergast is awesome, blah blah blah. The ending is a bit X-Files-ish (which is not necessarily a negative thing), but you'll get your money's worth. Definitely a book to snatch up hot off the press; forget about waiting for it in paperback. Preston & Child: keep 'em coming! More Pendergast!
Rating: Summary: Pendergast is fabulous Review: Still Life with Crows is a must read for those of you who are Child/Preston fans. I have read everyone of their books and was less than excited about Cabinet of Curiosites. However, this book was good. It was a quick read and allowed us to see more of Special Agent Pendergast, who is turning into a fabulous character. The plot begins to fade at the end with a less than thrilling capture of a serial killer in underground caves (there is at least a recurring theme of being underground as is Pendergast's want), but the story is quite fun and the writing is compelling. It's definitely worth your time and money.
Rating: Summary: Recommended Review: "Still Life With Crows" is one of those books which one wants to like based on previous works by the same authors. While "Still Life..." wasn't a bad book--it kept my interest until the last scenes--it seemed to be too self-consciously written, self-referential, and tried too hard to be clever and funny, both of which it failed at. Featuring a sub-plot that seemed to go nowhere from their previous book, "Cabinet of Curiosities," "Still Life With Crows" also featured the odd and eccentric FBI Agent Pendergast from the same story. Preston/Childs stories are always well-told, but this one isn't one of their best. Even so, I recommend reading this book!
Rating: Summary: A creepy page-turner Review: I don't know if you've missed Special Agent Pendergast, but he's baaaaaaaaaaaaack! On 'vacation' from hell, he gets involved into the mysterious happenings at the little town of Medicine Creek, somewhere in Kansas. You can expect many twists and turns as he investigates multiple murders that just keep on coming, never, of course, losing his cool. A definite must for all Lincoln Preston fans.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Story Telling Review: This was just one more great story from these gentlemen. The focus character of this story is FBI Special Agent Pendergast, who in other novels has always proven to be the best character of them all. This story will have you guessing for quite some time. The climactic ending will have you on the end of your seat, and the final 2 pages will leave you breathless.
