Summary: Disturbing-In a Good Way
Review: Ah, the misfortunes of the Baudelaire orphans...Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. They've escaped Count Olaf three times already, but he's back on their trail again. This time, the orphans feel slightly safe in their new "home" at the eccentric Lucky Smells Lumber Mill for a time, but before you know it, they're facing their enemy again. Surrounded by a creepy and zany cast of characters, the Baudelaires' story continues, and this time it's filled with logs, bubblegum, a mad eye doctor, and a receptionist in disguise...

Before I proceed, I must say that you MUST NOT read this book without reading the previous three. I have read the first three in the series, and can say that this one will not make sense if you read it first. But for all those who can't get enough of Snicket, this book is just as good as the previous ones. Yes, it follows generally the same formula, but it's still satisfying with new characters, a new setting, and yet way of discovering and fighting Count Olaf. Snicket includes more "vocabulary words" throughout the text, and somehow, they continue to add to the story.

Before I close, I have one more comment. Snicket and "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is not for everyone. It must be read with a sense of humor, and an understanding that you shouldn't take everything seriously-it's a MOCK "gothic" novel. But for those of you who have strange senses of humor, a penchant for tongue-in-cheek wit, and a fondness for unique (and slightly childish) reads occasionally, this series is it. Yes, the seeming gloom and doom of these novels may seem disturbing, but in the smartest, funniest way.

Summary: Comical
Review: From the four books I've read so far, this one is the most silly. Not that being silly is bad, it's just that I wasn't expecting some of the events that occurred.

First of all, this super villian, Count Olaf, appears in this book dressed as a woman. I did think he was the foreman, but the description of the foreman really didn't fit Count Olaf. To find out he was disguised as a woman made me chuckle a bit. Then there was the sword fight. If Sunny was real, I would be scared as all get out of this baby. In this book, Sunny (a baby) is having a sword fight with an educated doctor (who barely wins the fight). Oh yes, this one was quite comical.

One thing I did notice is that Count Olaf isn't as strong a character in this edition. He seems to play behind the scene moreso than in the forefront. Which is fine, but I think he makes it more of an interesting read.

Overall, this isn't one of my favorites in the series. I will continue to read, but this one wasn't as good as the others. Enjoy.

Joy.

Summary: The Miserable Mill
Review: Hi my name is Alexandra and I just read one of the best books it's called The Miserable Mill. This was a book about these three orphans that have to live and work at a lumbermill called Lucky Smells Lumbermill. The names of these orphans are Violet, Sunny, and Clause. Violet loves to invent things is the oldest and is the next one to get the Baudelaire fortune. Clause loves to read and is the middle child and the only boy in the family. Sunny is a baby that loves to chew on things with her few teeth. In this story the orphans are sent to work at this lumbermill which is really crummy and the workers get paid in coupons and only get a stick of gum for lunch. Clause is sent to see an eye doctor because his glasses were broken because foreman Flacutono tripped him with his foot. Foreman Flacutono is a workman at the lumbermill who is mean to everyone. When clause gets there he meets two evil people and one of them is the orphans stalker. They make this evil plan trying to kill a work member but the orphans stop them before their plan works out. Lemony Snicket has really out done himself on this book. I really enjoyed this book and it was fun to read.

Summary: Deception Waits at the Miserable Mill
Review: The Baudelaire children are friendly and kind. Violet is the 14 year old inventor, Klaus is the almost 12 year old avid reader, and Sunny is the infant with a knack for biting things. Seeing such marvelous children, one might think they led lives of happiness. But it's just the opposite for Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. These three children happen to be the most unfortunate children on earth. And even though they might be friendly, it's hard to make a good thing out of a bad situation when you're at The Miserable Mill. The Baudelaire's, after their sad adventure on Lake Lachrymose, have been moved to a new guardian again. This time their caretaker is the head of the Lucky Smells Lumbermill, a place that isn't all that lucky. The children have been left in the care of Mr. Sir, the boss of the mill, who has a cloud of smoke for a head. Mr. Sir, I'm sorry to say, demands the children to work in the mill. Even Sunny must do her share of the labor. But it's not all bad, at least not to the children's new friend Phil who is a strong optimist. And there's Charles too, the friendly assistant to Mr. Sir. Unfortunately, both are such pushovers that they can't really do anything for the Baudelaire's except offer words of encouragement. But sawing the bark off lumber becomes the second worst thing on the Baudelaire's list of bad things, when the children realize that Count Olaf is back, only he doesn't look exactly the same...or rather, she doesn't look exactly the same. And if this wasn't enough, Klaus is suddenly suffering from memory loss, and only Violet can crack the mystery to save her brother and the other Lucky Smells Lumbermill employees before it's too late! All of this leads to one of the most exciting encounters in the whole "Series of Unfortunate Events". Lemony Snicket records another thrilling chapter of the Baudelaire's unfortunate lives. Look out for the pinching machine, long words in a book, people who aren't as they appear, and accidents that just might be fatal. Make sure you have book five and possibly book six handy, as these tales slip past you as quickly as Count Olaf.

Summary: Good but the rest are MUCH better
Review: In this book (4th) the Baudelaires are sent to work at Luckysmells Lumbermill. There they meet other workers and are forced to do horrible chores. Their pay for this "dreadful" work is coupons. Of course, Count Olaf shows up and fools the adults with her/his receptionist costume.
This book includes some laughs but it is NOT a negative book. I skipped books 1-3 but so far I've read/bought all of books 4-10. I personally think 1-3 are repetitive, but that is my opinion. If you are tempted to read 1-3, only read #1. To give you additional info, if you are looking for really exciting books, read books 7-10. They are soooo exciting!

Summary: How Miserable!
Review: MUCH better than the other three, this story follows the siblings to a lumbermil in some one horse town. But despite the misfortune of the Baudelaire siblings, Lemony Snicket makes sure that the 4th book in the series is funnier than the rest. Read it today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Shirley, you must be joking?
Review: Once again the Baudelaire orphans are transplanted in what will turn out to be a "Series of Unfortunate Events." Their newest home is the Lucky Smells Lumbermill dormitory.
Here once again Lemony tells the meaning of many words (usually with words that need the meaning explained.) We are treated to the difference of literally and figurative among other such concepts.
Naturally they think everyone is Olaf. And of course they are correct. A mystery has to be solved and to do this Violet must learn Klaus's skills of reading apprehension. Then there are lives to be saved and Klaus must learn Violets' inventive skills. Sunny stays En garde.

Summary: Filler Material?
Review: I used to believe that its only reason for existance is to send the Baudelaires to the school which changes the series and to provide more connections for the Unauthorized Autobiography.
After reading the latest books in the series, however, I cannot be sure any more. Could this be an Introduction to V.F.D.?

Summary: Most depressing book of the series
Review: Hmmm..... this book was unfortunately less enjoyable to me than any other book in the series. I found it to be depressing and full of sawdust, however the character persona of Shirley made me cackle like a hyena.

Summary: Must Be Snicket
Review: We all know that Lemony Snicket's books are so unfortuanate its hard to bear through it but this one is probably just another time passer to just make the Baudelaires a little more miserable, LIKE ITS POSIBLE! I like the books alot but I didn't enjoy this one.
