Rating: Summary: Responsibility Review: It is about time that someone shed light on the lack of responsibility and accountability that exists in the upper classes of our society and how destructive patterns of parental behavior can ruin all children. Love and attention, not material property are the essential child-rearing tools. I LOVED IT!
Rating: Summary: What's funny about this book? Review: I see a lot of readers say this was so funny, such a great book yada yada yada. I must have missed the "funny" chapter. I couldn't find one character to like or even sympathize with. I hated the spineless nanny, the kid was a brat, and the woman/mom was horrid. I realize the point of the book was to show how some of the wealthy treat their kids and help. But come on... it's not funny!
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointed! Review: I got the Nanny Diaries based on all the great things I had Heard about it and I can tell you I was VERY Disappointed. I was hoping for a nice light Beach Read and all I got was a book about a very uphappy family and the perfect Nanny that comes into their lives. Not worth twenty-five dollars!
Rating: Summary: Blah, Blah, Blah Review: When I finished this book, I thought it was me. I was glad to see so many others at Amazon felt the same way. Before you spend money on this book, check out all the one-star reviews. Some disappointed readers have written very good critiques. Personally, I think that all the effort in this book went into the marketing. This was a very "sellable" idea. Apparently, however, not enough time and effort (and money?) was spent on plot development, characterization and editing. All in all, the story reminded me of a former co-worker who never stopped talking. It was blah, blah, blah all day. Every ten minutes or so, I listened to a sentence or two of her endless chatter and got the gist of what she was saying. Likewise, if you buy this book, you can read a paragraph...skip ten pages...read a paragraph...skip ten pages, etc. This book was a lot of blah, blah, blah. Don't waste your time and money on it.
Rating: Summary: A good read for a dire genre Review: I was in doubt as to how many stars to give this book. A part of me wanted, dearly wanted to rate it five stars, but another, that professional function (the Svenlike emotion) couldn't do so. As an author myself, I felt it was a very, very humorous first novel. And it actually contained a decent sense of satire that you rarely find amongst young, female American writers. But it was no Joyce, and for this and the following reasons I had to downgrade a star. The charaters names, whilest somewhat clever, made this book a dificult read. Nanny, for example, the protagonist who deals with the young child, a new boyfriend, finals ... is a brilliantly sketched character, but one feels that by her name alone her personality is dangerously drawn back into the characteture. Indeed, this would be the functional problem with the book as a whole: if there is a major one. It is just too cliche with its characters, something Tom Woolfe or Kurt Anderson have done with far more professionalism beforehand. It's a good read, however. The Nanny Diaries appeals to a mass-market, and when this happens, it is rare to find two authors so young who are doing it. Their age does not show through the veil of language or plot, particularly, either: which is as pleasant as it is surprising. I am a little tired with books by twenty-something girls writing about the lives and problems of twenty-something girls. But as far as this book is concerned, it's the best of the genre, and even something something quite touching.
Rating: Summary: Very entertaining. Review: Enjoyable read. I hope the writers put out another book soon.
Rating: Summary: This was the BEST! Review: I totally enjoyed this book. As a stay-at-home Mom of two, I really enjoyed reading how other women with much wealth got along on a day to day basis! I am sure there were quite a few over-dramatized scenes, but not that far from the truth. Daily I see women with their "Nannies" and only 1 child and the Mothers are always complaining about how they have no time for themselves or to get a thing done, because of the child. It is truly sad, but the kids didn't ask to be brought into the situation, they are just kind of scheduled around. I always wondered about the life of Nanny and how they felt about raising someone else's child. Mrs. X was a totally trip and througout the entire book I kept waiting for Nanny to let her have it! I wanted Mrs. X to get a totally wake-up call and come into reality. I wish the book had been a tad bit longer so we could see how Nanny fared with H.H. and Ms. C. Those were two parts of the book that were really juicy!! There were somethings left untold and I guess we could use our imagination a bit, but nonetheless, the story was still very humorous and very funny. Job well done.
Rating: Summary: More sad than funny for me. . . Review: I found much of the book funny but found myself overwhelmingly sad at the life this poor child led. All he had for stability were his "nannies" and when Mrs. X decides they have to leave for one transgression or another, he is the one who truly suffers. The last few pages where heartbreaking. . .I find the reviews that call the book hilarious very disturbing.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT book! Review: As someone who reads quite a bit, I have to say that this book was great, one of the most entertaining I have read in a LONG time. I honestly read this in three days, while working 12 hr shifts at the same time! I found it impossible to put down, and was reading every spare minute I had. I also was a nanny while in college, and I couldn't help but relate and nod my head in agreement with the events that took place in this book. While the very wealthy family I cared for was awesome and also very involved, I heard horror stories and saw with my own eyes how things were for some of the others! I think that everyone would enjoy this book though, regardless if they have had similar experiences!!
Rating: Summary: Talk about your guilty pleasures! Review: I love dish books and this book was fantastic. Emma and Nickola do an amazing job of taking you on a trip into the world of wealth and child rearing. A world where young "hip" nannies work or slave for mistressess that turn into creatures of the night. The things that nightmares are made of. Once I picked it up I couldnt put it down. I strongly recommend this book. It quickly became My number one book this year, followed by "Martha Inc" and because Im Pregnant..."Babytales: A Pregnancy Companion.
