Summary: An Un-put-downable sad story!
Review: The Nanny Diaries will make you rethink your dream to become one of Manhattan's elite. In this story, Nanny (appropriately named) agrees to work for the X's. She becomes little Grayer X's lifeline. In a world where outside appearances are everything, Nanny must pick up the slack for Mrs. X. In the process, Nanny almost becomes his "mother"; It is the ending, however, that will leave you with tears in your eyes.

This book does an excellent job of tugging at your heartstrings. I really began to feel for the children of competitive preparatory preschools, play groups and Park Avenue Apartments. A must read for any mother who questions her parenting skills!

Summary: FABULOUS
Review: I hate to sound so cliche, but this is a must read! You won't believe your eyes while you get a vicariuos thrill looking into the rich world of the upper east side. You'll come away thankful you didn't grow up in such "priviledge"

Summary: Pretty funny, but F word used too much!
Review: This was a pretty good book. Who doesn't want to know humorous details about the rich "mothers" on 5th Avenue that hire nannies to take responsibility of their children? It was cleverly written. However, the F word was rampant throughout the whole book, which was a little too much. There were paragraphs where it would appear over 5 times. For those who are offended by this word, they may want to think twice about reading this book.

Summary: I wanted a tougher Nanny!
Review: Without giving the ending away, I must say that any normal person with a shred of self-worth would have told Mrs. X where to go, long before some of the shenanigans occurred.

Yes, I understand Nan's devotion to Grayer (as she is the only adult who is devoted to him at all), and I understand her financial bind, but I still find it hard to believe that she would endure such horrible treatment.

After a while, I stopped feeling sorry for Nan, and figured that if she was going to be a door mat, then she was going to be walked on.

Overall the book was an easy read...I'd definitely buy the paperback, though.

Summary: Upper class meets working class
Review: Over the same weekend, I finished The Nanny Diaries and watched Gosford Park on VHS. How similar the maids, cooks, valets, butlers and other house servants were treated at the turn-of-the century compared to today's nannies. While one scene in Gosford Park had the Mary, the young maid wash, iron and prepare a blouse for Maggie Smith's character, only to change her mind the next day about wearing the blouse. How similar to Nannies' plight. I liked the book, but only wish there were an epilogue. Will Mr. X would leave Mrs. X. for Ms. Chicago. Will Grayer's tantrums will lead to rebellion as a teen. Only time will tell...

Summary: Great book
Review: Very entertaining. I know people like Mrs. X. Very accurate account of this type of lifestyle.

Summary: Average book
Review: I don't understand the big to-do about this book. The writing isn't outstanding (and it's peppered with obsenities), and the subject matter isn't original. However, it was funny in certain areas and it's easy enough to read.

Summary: Trashy but enjoyable
Review: This book is by no means a brilliant piece of literature, but it is very, very amusing.

McLauglin and Kraus nicely mock the child-as-fashionable-accessory parents, which must be on the uprise if you take a look at the latest Ralph Lauren ads. In doing so, they also satire the latest parenting trends, including the high-brow organic soybean kiddie food and the masculine naming of girls.

The characters are two-dimensional, the plot sometimes self-serving, and the ending unsatisfying. Also, the occasional illogic will sometimes cause the reader to want to smack her forehead in frustration (why doesn't Nanny's advice-dropping family give her some cash or a spare room!)

Despite all this, the book is a clever diversion and like Nanny, you will want to see what happens to the Xes. Highly recommended for beach reading, as well as for shock value in anyone planning to become/hire a child care provider.

Summary: The Nanny Diaries
Review: This was a total waste of time--yes, about 5-6 hrs of my tinme actually, since i finished it in hopes that it would improve--

The guy from Indiana had a very articulate review which i completely agree with--don't buy this book-i borrowed it from the library--As a mom who works full time and employs a nanny, I value her efforts more than any of my employees at the hospital where i work. Mr and Mrs. X are real losers, it's hard for me to believe anyone is this self centered, and harder to believe that "nanny" (the authors couldn't come upwith a name for her?) would continue to work for them. The reason being that she felt sorry for the dear little angel.
I wonder, what was the point of this silly book.
I'm amazed to see so many favorable reviews, if childcare workers out there are so mistreated, they need to move on to a better job---i believe many employers of nannies truly value their caregivers--

I wouldn't bother reading this!
