Rating: Summary: A Winner! Review: This book was just so good! I couldn't put it down and I have a 9 week old baby, but I managed to find time to finish it in about 3 days. It made me cry at the end and very few books have ever done that. I was so sad for Grayer, who got attached to nannies and his parents sent them away. I also cried for Nanny, who loved Grayer and would never see him again. And I cried for all the little children who are actually living lives like that. This book is a fast read, very entertaining, funny, maddening, heart wrenching.... I could go on and on... but just read it and see for yourself.
Rating: Summary: A juvenile book about nothing. Review: First of all, I admit I had moderate expectations for the book, thinking that the topic of being a nanny to the high and mighty might be pretty funny, or at least "so true." But this book was a BIG disappointment - it was neither funny nor true. It tries so hard to be cute and smug, but the protagonist comes off as a giddy, witless college student, who wonders, just before a "big date," if she's shaved that morning! Then, of course, there is the "intrigue" of the extramarital affair Mr X is having, but you sympathize so little for anyone in the book that you just don't care. The story here is so hackneyed and contrived, I can't believe the book made the best seller list. Don't waste your time. Keep your money.
Rating: Summary: life immitating art or art immitating life?? Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could relate to "Nanny", having been a nanny for a family in London. People may think that some of the situations and/or attitudes of the "X" family were far-fetched but they were true to life and delivered with humour. On a more serious note, the book was also a reminder of how important the job of raising children is and how children are affected by everything and everyone around them. They take in more than we think.
Rating: Summary: Highly Entertaining Novel Review: This is not a piece of good literature. It will probably never be considered a classic and many of the characters seem to be stereotypes, flatly written and one-dimensional. That said, I must admit that this is up there with the most entertaining books I have read. It is impossible to put down. I found myself reading it every free second I had over the past four days. It's a perfect book for a light, fun summer read. It pokes fun at the rich in a way that is actually somewhat realistic. I know many families that are a little much like the X family for my taste. The novel covers nine months in the life of Nanny, a college senior struggling to balance school, friends, a blossoming love, and the every will of her self-centered employer. It is told with humor and I found myself laughing outloud at least once a chapter. The characters are not the most complicated ones out there, but they are definitely interesting. I loved Grayer, the child, the most. He was too precious, but I felt sorry for him at the same time. My only real problem with the book was that the ending left so many things up in the air. Part of me hopes there will be a sequel because I would like to see these things resolved. The other part of me really hopes that they won't. This book was a one-time deal and anymore outings with the characters will surely extend their welcome in my mind anyway. That doesn't mean this book isn't worth reading. It's, like I said, perfect for an easy, entertaining read. Perfect for summer.
Rating: Summary: Nanny Diaries - Best Book I've Read in Ages Review: I'm an Avid Reader and haven't been inspired by a really good book in ages---I'm also sick of diaries trying to copy Brdget Jones. I really liked the cover of this book, so I decided to give it a try anyway. I was plesantly suprised to find a fresh original story that kept me reading, despite the fact that I work a 50 hour work week. This book is definately worth reading.
Rating: Summary: An Adorable, Fun and Easy Read!! Perfect for a vacation! Review: I don't think anyone pretended that The Nanny Diaries was the great American novel! I read this darling book on the outside deck of a cruise ship. This is the perfect book to read when there are a lot of distractions (like beautiful views). It was easy to get into and there are not a lot of characters to keep up with. The writing is crisp and fast paced. Since my life is so far removed from the X's, I enjoyed reading about the rich and famous (are there really people like that?).
Rating: Summary: Save your money Review: I admit it, I bought this book because of all the hype. And I read it all hoping it would redeem itself. It didn't. Nanny is annoying and Mr. & Mrs. X should be put out of their misery. Grayer was the only endearing character in the whole book. Why would Nan continue to put up with the rotten antics of Mrs.X - a persona I hope I never meet in my life...what a waste of oxygen. Don't waste your time or money on this piece of literary junk.
Rating: Summary: Nanny should get a life Review: I remember when I was in my early 20s and allowed so many people to walk all over me, having no self-esteem to stand up for myself. Really didn't care to re-live that experience, but in reading "The Nanny Diaries" this is exactly what "Nanny" allows her employers to do to her. She's continually amazed at the horrible way they treat her/their child/each other throughout the book, however, she continues working for them until she is (no surprise) sacked like her predecesor. I read the book in just a couple days, waiting for more depth to the story but was disappointed. Reading it left me in a bad mood for several days. An okay summer read, but I don't necessarily recommend it.
Rating: Summary: a huge disappointment Review: It's hard to describe how disappointed I am after reading this book. While I didn't have high expectation, I certainly didn't expect to dislike the characters, especially the main character, as much as I did. Although to indicate that I disliked her would imply that I was drawn to the book, and that's just not true. Nanny professed much compassion for her charge but did nothing to make life any better for the child she cared for. She professed disgust for her employers, yet did nothing to improve her situation. The book read like a many page whine, which I get enough of in real life, I didn't need to pay to get more. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of this darn book from my bookshelf without contributing to someone else having to be just as disappointed as I was. Save yourself from this dilemma and save your money.
Rating: Summary: Loved it... Review: The Nanny Diaries is not just a story about how the upper class can sometimes be unbelieveably insensitive to their employees and treat them as if they come from nothing and have no education of their own. Well, thats what I expected form this book and I read it anyway. I am so glad I did because The Nanny Diaries was far more than that. "Nanny", the main character, seems to have it all, except rent money for her tiny oer-priced Manhattan loft and a boyfriend (but who ever has that?). So she gets a job looking after what first seems like a spoiled brat, but later becomes the object of Nanny's affection (one of them, but the other's a surprise!). The plot stays very true to the main story line- working for an upper-Manhattan mother- but has surprising twists that just make you wonder what will happen next. Its definately enjoyable.
