Rating: Summary: Headline: "Real nanny identifies with book!" Review: My best friend is a nanny, and picked this book up for a summer read when the family she works for went to Europe. She started the book before she left, and told me that I needed to read it too. I got on the waiting list at my library, and the book was mine in two days. The librarian told me that the book had twenty four to forty eight hour turnover time, and after reading it, I could see why. The book is hysterical. I am sure that the "nanny families" the authors worked for cringed when the book came out, and those brave enough to read it undoubtedly found elements of themselves in it. While I myself am not a nanny, listening to the tales my "nanny friend" tells me makes me feel qualified enough to say that this book is surprisingly true to life. While the uninitiated may think that Mr. and Mrs. X are over the top in their behavior, they would be mistaken. The life of the idle rich and their hobby children make for a gripping and gratifying read. The book has a juicy expose quality to it, but it is saved from being tawdry by the witty writing. I deducted one star from my review because the ending left me feeling unfulfilled.
Rating: Summary: Not Quite Worth It... Review: I bought this book craving for something funny to read and from it's hype and fabulous reviews, I thought 'hey! this is a must read'. Boy, was I wrong. It started off well enough and it's first chapter hooked me in but it progressively got worse and worse and I found myself just skimming haphazardly through chapters. I couldn't wait to finish the book so I could move on to something better. Yes, the subject may be untouched and therefore seem original but other than that, there isn't really much to it. In fact, I think the word I'm looking for is BORING. The authors didn't really know where to take the story I believe and it just went on and on. So my advice to you is to save your money and wait for something better to come along.
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing Review: Wow- they must have had great publicity to create all that buzz, because this book actually stinks. It was a great concept, but so poorly written the protaganist is not even likeable. It could easily have been condensed into an article. I don't know who edited this thing, but the ending was awful, and there was no resolution to subplots, including the nanny's relationship with her boyfriend. Very disappointing. Don't waste your money- wait for the movie.
Rating: Summary: Read This Now Review: This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was so sad to see it end and kind of felt cheated because one is left hanging. If the authors or anyone who knows them reads this review and can tell me what happened from the point where the book ends I would be grateful. The fact that this story was based on real experiences is so disturbing. Manhattan socialites of this type should be sterilized and the particular child in this book should be given to his "Nanny" for adoption. He seems like a sweet child with great potential if his mother had the capacity for love and nurturing like his "Nanny" did. "Nanny" I wish you could adopt him! That child needs you!
Rating: Summary: Where's the rest of it? Review: There's a fine line between being a martyr and being a doormat. Unfortunately, the narrator in this novel has "WELCOME" written all over her. While the portrait of her interaction with her employers was engaging, I just couldn't get beyond her wishy-washy-ness in the face of such, well, cruelty. Maybe her desperation to keep the job would have been more believable if she didn't have a wealthy grandmother and a solid post-graduate education to back her up. Then there's the ending. Imagine "The Wizard of Oz" ending before Dorothy has the chance to get home. That's how I felt when I got to the last page of this book. Nothing is really resolved: I wanted to know what happened to her burgeoning relationship with HH, the boy upstairs; I wanted to know what happened to her young charge, Grayer; I wanted to know if she got a new apartment or found a full-time job; and I really wanted--even expected--the satisfaction of poetic justice, some kind of final confrontation in which the narrator exposes her employers for who and what they really are. It's fiction, after all. You can get revenge in fiction. Needless to say, I was disappointed. It's a credit to the authors that I felt so strongly about the story, and the book as a whole was very entertaining; I thought it was well-written, especially the characters. For the most part, I could barely put it down. But the ending just didn't live up to the promise of the narrative. Why write a book about such mean people when you don't get to chance to yell at them eventually?
Rating: Summary: Revenge of the Nannies Review: Starts of good...nice details that will shock and amuse you. The nannies speak for all others who come in contact with these ignorant clueless parents. Unfortunately, once the fun wears off it becomes boring and tedious. The nanny love interest/tie -in is for the high school readers out there.
Rating: Summary: The book you'll remember Review: I can't believe this book could get anything less than 5 stars from anybody - - well, except Mrs. X, of course..... I saw this book in the store, but the cover and title didn't interest me, neither did the blurbs on the back. But my daughter bought it, read it, and loaned it to me with her recommendation, and I got completely lost in it - - couldn't put it down!!! I have bought four more copies - hardback no less - because I knew so many friends and family that would love it. Excellent!! Entertaining, enlightening.
Rating: Summary: The Nanny Diaries: A Novel Review: I really enjoyed this book and found myself shaking my head about many of the "upper crust" situations written about. My main concern when I finished the book was what will happen to the child in the story and to the baby expected. These poor kids will be a mess. I guess because I am a professional educator, my empathy goes to the children being raised in these families where "love" is provided by giving "things" and time for children is not convenient. It's a sorry social sceniero!
Rating: Summary: Nannies and Ninnies Review: This is a good book for summer/beach reading in that the reader is quickly taken into the self-indulgent lives of the wealthy and into the unselfish hearts of those who raise their unfortunate children. The problem is that the characters, with the exception of little Grayer, are all one-dimensional. I found myself pulling for Mrs. X to do just one tiny thing right, as even the most evil occasionally do, but it wasn't to be. Although the book has been touted as being hilarious, it is actually a depressing, though speedy, read. It does provide a glimpse into a world most of us find unfamiliar and, for that alone, it's probably worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Awesome, absolutely loved it!! Review: This is an absolutely, engrossing novel. I could not put it down until I had finished it, and then I wished it wasn't over!! This book keeps you laughing, and it's not a good idea to read it in a quiet study hall, since you WILL be laughing out loud... ;) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
