Rating: Summary: Interesting insights, but not smoothly written Review: Although Nan and Grayer's plights rang true, I was not drawn into the story at all. I could not follow all brand names of foreign and domestic foods dropped, and found the prose and storyline rather 'clunky.' The book is not 'hilarious.' Perhaps I had expected more from all the hype in the reviews I found here.
Rating: Summary: Breaks my heart Review: As many other reviewers of this book, I purchased this book for a little light reading but stayed up until 1:00 a.m. last night with my heart aching for many of the characters but mostly for little Grayer. I think this book portrays a different kind of child abuse -- emotional and psychological abuse. Mrs. X rips people away from her little son when they have become inconvenient for her. His one chance in this world to become a good human being is to bond with others and any time he gets close to someone, they are fired on a whim. Why have children if you have no desire to be with them and you "spatula" them off when they want a hug? My heart not only ached for Mrs. X's little boy, Grayer, but also for -Caitlin, the previous nanny fired for wanting a week of vacation -Connie, the maid who is made to scrub with a toothbrush, made to leave her own kids at the drop of a hat when Mrs. X doesn't want to be with her own child, and finally fired because Mr. X was having an affair and Mrs. X needed to take it out on someone -and finally Nanny, fired for wanting to attend her own graduation. Shouldn't these children -- left home without parents when they are sick, deprived of naps and decent food, forced to remain out of the house until it is more convenient for the mom -- be put into state custody and given to a good and loving family that would appreciate them?
Rating: Summary: So so funny Review: This novel is so well-written and is such a perfect picture of the life and times of a nanny for the truly rich, if not famous. Nanny is overworked, underappreciated and always shocked by the latest over-the-top bad bad bad behavior of her employer, Mrs. X. The tragedy here, of course, is the life of Nanny's charge, Grayer, who craves the time and attention of his Mommy and Daddy but who is treated as a burden and status-symbol by his two non-parents. This book is truly laugh-out-loud funny. I could not put it down because I HAD to know what insufferable situation Nanny would find herself in next. This is a great summer read that will not disappoint.
Rating: Summary: A comedy that made me boiling mad... Review: This was a very interesting and fast read which, though hilarious at times, ultimately made me very, very angry. I wanted to jump through the pages and kill Mrs. X in the most heinous way possible. She is, without a doubt, the most evil character in a fictional work in years.
Rating: Summary: Speechless... Review: The Nanny Diaries is a truly captivating read. When I first picked up this book it seemed like a "comedy" book, but I was wrong. This book is an absolute page-turner that makes you really think. A boy named Grayer really wants love, atention, and affection from his parents, but sadly he doesn't get any. Grayer trys to get it from the nannies his parents hire, but sooner or later, they are fired and replaced. It makes me sad to see someone like Grayer, although the story is fiction, there are many out there just like him, and that's what really upsets me. This story goes on to a surprise at the end, with a twist. Hopefully not many kids can relate to Grayer, and I pray to God that no one ends up with parents like that! If you think I am overreacting, you must read this book at see what I mean. I highly recomend this book, it's so heartwarming and touching. I know I am going to be checking it out from my library again! have fun reading it!
Rating: Summary: Disappointment- but a quick read! Review: I have been on a waiting list for this book for three months at my library. I finally got it yesterday and finished it in under seven hours. It went by so quickly that I didn't realize until today that I never got to know one character. The decision to use Nanny, Mrs and Mr X and H.H. as names completely removes the reader from the characters. Sure, it's cute, but we meet these characters already at a distance. Nanny has almost NO personality except that she's weak and a pushover. If I was given her 500 dollar paycheck at the end of the book I certainly would have protested that I was not paid the agreed-upon amount! H.H. is handsome. So what? That's all we ever know! The Xs are the most poorly written. There is so much opportunity for us to peek into the world of the rich, but all we get is a stereotype. When I invest time in a book, I want to learn something about the characters- I do not want to be given all I need to know on the inside flap! The ending is the biggest problem- I'm okay with how she's fired, but the loose ends are annoying, not sly! In the end, the book saddened me. I think that there are the Grayers of the world who need parents to love them. The book was not lighthearted- it was sad.
Rating: Summary: At least the kid's funny Review: So many funny observations, such a weak ending! These Diaries nail the way 4-year olds talk and the way imaginary rich people in books act, all to hilarious effect. Thus one hopes for a showdown at the end, where Nanny finally pushes back and stands up to persecution. Well...maybe in the movie version.
Rating: Summary: A "Half & Half" Review: I read this book in two days, and while I highly recommend it, I feel I should warn others that it is a bit bi-polar. The first half completely draws you in and you are laughing out-loud at Nanny's predicaments and cheering for her budding romance (this was day 1 with the book). On day 2 (the second half) you are terribly upset, want to scream at Mrs. X yourself, yell at Nanny to stick up for herself, and wish you could just take little Grayer in your arms and tell him everything will be ok. It is a very entertaining and easy read- I just wish there was more of it!! You become wrapped up in the characters and just HAVE to see what will become of them.
Rating: Summary: Voyueristic Review: I read this book in one day! It was so riveting with the Nanny, Mrs X and the boy. I wanted to know what was going to happened next. Was Mr X going to get caught my Mrs X. What really clinched it was the earmuffs and the week at the spa when her son had the flu. Both of authors gave us (the readers) a good look at the rich raise their children. It was disgusting how Mrs X treated her son as if he was a programmable robot. You know she will be paying up the wahzoo for therapy. It was great summer book and was like reading a movie! Very good! I just wanted to know if Nanny and HH continued their relationship.
Rating: Summary: Funny/Sad/Poignant Review: Funny in situations, profound in thinking, sad in parenting. This is a well-done story of not just a nanny but of a child of today with parents who are never there for him. Whether they live on Park Avenue or not, parents are not there for their kids today, and that's the sad part. However, nanny's thoughts as she goes through her days are hilarious! They could have come right from my own mouth. Highly recommended summer reading.
