Rating: Summary: A sad story Review: I had heard a lot about this book and checked it out from my library expecting to have a few laughs.I found it very sad. These strange people who live in Manhattan and have children only for show apparently are sick. What a bunch of phoneys! I thought it was dreadful the way these supposedly upper class families treat their employees. What is worse is how the nannies and others put up with it. I believe this book was made up from several experiences with different families. However, if I had worked for the "X's" I would not have lasted a week. What a tacky pair!
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: Reading The Nanny Diaries was like sitting in front of a wide movie screen that lets you get close enough to peek inside the lives of a rich and oblivious family. I love the smart, fast-paced writing style, and the methods used to emotionally draw the reader into the story so we could feel compassion for Grover even though he's somewhat bratty. But after understanding his parents, you'll lighten up on the kid, and root for him. The Nanny Diaries is engaging, funny, clever, and a recommended read; especially for people who love NYC novels.
Rating: Summary: What's all the fuss? Review: I hearrd this was really good ala Bridget Jones. It's not even in the same catagory. Kind of depressing really.
Rating: Summary: Not So Funny Review: As with many other reviewiers, I found this book much more sad than funny. I didn't enjoy watching the emotional torture of this young girl and little boy unfold. It was a quick read, but not particularly entertaining.
Rating: Summary: cute story, but main character was annoying...... Review: she had no backbone, i like stronger characters
Rating: Summary: Great Book, Frustrating Characters Review: I read this book in 3 days. I started reading it only on my lunch hour, but found myself reaching for it at home as well. It was a quick, easy read. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations Nan got herself into, but overall I was just frustrated with the situation. I can see why she didn't stand up to Mrs. X, EVER (which as I can see was a major concern for other reviewers). But QUIT for goodness sake!! I realize this is a work of fiction, but it has some fact-based experiences that could really make a reader want to scream fruitlessly into the book. 4 stars for entertainment, 1 star for frustration.
Rating: Summary: Scrumptious Fare Review: I could not put the book down - I had to know what Mrs. X was going to do next. McLaughlin and Kraus did a sensational job. Mrs. X's character was ghastly and seeped into my dreams. How are people like them allowed to procreate? We need more Emma and Nicola - we need more!
Rating: Summary: Deja Vu Review: For anyone who has ever fallen in love with a child in their care, this is THE BOOK. "Nanny" comes from a priveleged background, but for some reason decides to undertake the strenuous and mind-numbing job of taking care of a neglected four year old boy. All her college courses cannot prepare her for becoming terribly attached to Grayer. She sees the injustices of his apathetic upbringing, and I found myself so often, while reading, exclaiming out loud. Having worked with upper middle-class children all my career, I saw many of my students in Grayer and his family. Nanny maintains her own counsel, though, and doesn't say a word to the people who pay her pittance of a salary. (The ear muffs blew me away) I would love to read more by these women!
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing! Review: I heard all the hype about this book and decided to buy it. Unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with what I read. You probably know by now what it's all about: a nanny taking care of a snobby NY family's 4-year-old, and all the (mis)adventures that happen along the way. All through the book, I kept thinking "Why doesn't she get out of there???" or at least "Why doesn't she tell these people off???" I didn't feel sorry for Nanny, nor did I think she was doing anything extraordinary. A college student should know well enough to get a better, well-paying, higher profile job than that. She never stands up for herself, and she ends up leaving in the wimpiest way possible. OK, it was funny at times, but it didn't really live up to all the hype that went along with it. Very disappointing!!!
Rating: Summary: A quick, fun summer read. Review: This was the perfect book for lounging on the beach and dusting the sand from the pages. I would recommend it for anyone who has kids, or has been a babysitter. I was casting the movie in my mind the whole way through!
