Rating: Summary: JK's Nanny Diaries Review Review: High society, the ridiculously wealthy on the Upper East Side of New York City, and a babysitter trying to work her way through college form the plot of The Nanny Diaries. Written from the perspective of Nan or "Nanny," this story is based on the real experiences of the authors, ex-nannies themselves. This amusing novel exposes the way parenting is really done among the rich, and when Nan gets involved with a "family" that's just a little too dysfunctional for her taste, she is trapped in their web of materialism. The reason for this? She desperately needs the money. From Manhattan to the Hamptons, from lavender linen water to original Disney print's hung on the kiddy room walls, these are among the objects and places that readers will encounter on this hilarious book. If you are looking for a light-hearted story containing a kernel of truth, then you will love The Nanny Diaries.
Rating: Summary: Oh man, oh man! Review: I could not put this book down and found myself unexpectantly finishing it in less than two days...not a good thing to do during my finals, but this was an EXCELLENT book!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, wonderfully written Review: The Nanny Diaries, is, of course, about Nanny, a college student working as a nanny in New York City. She begins to work for an upper-class family, the Xes. Throughout the book, we follow Nan and her experiences with the Xes and their son Grayer. I read this book in all of three hours. The style of writing, like that of Bridget Jones' Diary, is addicting. I would often find myself laughing out loud while reading. Great story, hilarious characters, a must-read. After finishing the book I was craving for more.
Rating: Summary: TERRIFIC FUN Review: I was absolutely prepared to hate this book, but I couldn't put it down! I assumed it was just another in a long line of current pop fiction where the main female character was looking for love in all the wrong places. I absolutely loved the little boy who is the most dimensional character in the book, and probably the only reason Nan is allowed to endure all the grief that the X family shoves her way. The scenes become a bit redundant, and I wondered how Nan balanced school, thesis and work so effectively, but I never lost interest. It is surprisingly well-written and often moving.
Rating: Summary: Heartbreaking Review: While I found this book difficult to put down, I disagree entirely with reviewers who find this to be a funny story. I find it tragic. What is funny about child neglect, rude behavior, and abusive treatment. My heart ached throughout this book for that sweet 4 year old boy.
Rating: Summary: Great read! Review: I loved this book! It was a great read and a fast one too. Even though it has a disclaimer at the beginning of the book about the characters being fictional, you know they are based on someone somewhere. My older sister used to be a nanny in NYC and her family was nothing like the X's. The mother and the father worked but they both took time to spend with their children. The mother ended up quitting her job (at a major tv station) so that she could spend more time with her chldren. After my sister left their employment she would still go visit them and spend the night when she was in town. The parents are down-to-earth types and totally cool. Much unlike the self-absorbed X's. I wish the authors would have given more background on the X's to maybe explain why they were the way they were. I think the main explanation for Mrs. X's bad attitude was that her husband was cheating on her and she had to take it out on someone so she took it out on Nan. I would have liked to see Nan take her on in the end but Nan wanted to leave with grace and dignity. She knew that she would be bad-mouthed (even worse) if she had it out with Mrs. X so she didn't fight back. The closest she came to that was telling Mrs. X that Ms. Chicago had been in the apartment and she didn't do that out of spite but out of some sort of warning and misguided loyalty to Mrs. X. All in all, a great book, it will make you laugh and cry.
Rating: Summary: Sweetly Poignant Review: By the time I finished reading this story, I felt that I knew the nanny so well I was ready to adopt her! Not only was she strong and resourceful, she was ready to leap tall buildings in a single bound to keep her young charge safe, even though it sometimes meant putting her own career hopes in jeopardy. The character of the child, Grayer, was also excellently done. How could you not absolutely fall in love with a kid who said things like, "Be smart," carried around his father's business card, and 'wassailed.' This was a wonderfully done first novel and I look forward to reading more from these authors in the future.
Rating: Summary: Very Interesting Review: I thought this book was very good and kept me entertained. It was pretty amusing to see how the rich lived in this book and how uninvolved they were in each others lives. I liked the book until the very end, I thought it all ended very abrubtly as though the writer were ready to end the book and just finished all the loose ends as quickly as possible. I was very happy with it up until that point. It has left me asking why it ended the way it did.
Rating: Summary: Loved It! Review: I have to say that if you are a secratary, or an assistant in New York for an upper class indivual you can relate to this story. It will make you laugh and the funny parts, cry at the heartwrentching onces and symphatize with her because you know only all too well where the story will led to. It will also let you see how the "better half" lives and what they do with their time. What else can I say only to read it, trust me you will like it, everyone I have spoken with loved it.
Rating: Summary: Fun! Review: I loved reading this book and had a hard time putting it down. It gives you a look into the lives of the extremely wealthy in Manhattan and I found it very interesting. It isn't extremely well written, but it is fun and a quick read.
