Rating: Summary: A former nanny Review: I fought reading this book until four days ago, I am now finished with it and I LOVED this book. EVERYONE told me I HAD to read this book because I was a nanny for nine years for four different families. This does not include the many other families that I babysat for throughout those same years. I also attended a prestigious college in the Boston area while doing so. Unfortunately I could completely relate to the character of Nanny. The ridiculous requests, the absences when needed most, the inconsiderate acts of not being home on time for classes and the lovable kids that make you stay. The book actually brought me to tears as I relived the tenderness of a child, the monstrosity of a mother and the non-existence of a father. Anyone who thinks this was unrealistic or spiteful has not been a nanny or probably has hired one. Of course not every family is like this; but there are enough out there to write a book about. Bottom line: read the book- it is fun, heartwarming and more realistic than you would like to believe.
Rating: Summary: Really Entertaining Read Review: I picked this up to read on the plane. It was great! The story follows the story of Nan (read Nanny) and her quest to find a PART time position. (Did I stress Part time) By happenstance she finds Mrs. X, and her delightful son Grayer, soon to be nicknamed Grover. This story follows her through a year in the life of this incredibly dysfunctional family. You will laugh and want to cry at the way the Grayer is used as an accessory by his family, but well loved by Nan. She really goes above and beyond trying to make up for the love he is missing from his family. My favorite part in the book is when she has to dress up as a tele tubby, can you imagine how hot that would be? Then throw back a couple of drinks to get through a childs Halloween party, it was great. It is hard to imagine that people live like this, but very insightful. After being in customer relations, I can really relate to what Nan had to go through with the selfish Mrs. X! Her relationship with her family and friends is wonderful, as well as the on the fringes romance w/Harvard. Her mother really does try and help her find a backbone with her employers, and you can really picture it. This book is well written and very beleivable, it made it to my "keeper" shelf. I recommend this book for anyone looking for something to pass the time enjoyably. If you employee a Nanny, maybe you should read this to see it from another perspective.
Rating: Summary: They should have taken more chances Review: I finished The Nanny Diaries 6 months ago, but I'd started reading it when it first came out and put it down for a while. I was kind of disappointed. Despite my disappointment, I couldn't get the story out of my head until I picked it up again and finished it. The authors really needed to take more chances. There were a few huge missteps that ruined the book for me. For one: The Harvard Hottie. Introducing him into the story was a mistake. He wasn't interesting, and I found it hard to believe this Harvard graduate who lives in the same building as the awful Mrs. X would be bearable. His biggest faux pas in the book is inviting Nanny to a bar with his obnoxious friends. I didn't believe for one minute he wouldn't judge Nanny. His storyline would have worked if he'd been impossibly snotty, and then learned something about his snottiness through Nanny. Another big mistake was Grayer. Why was the kid lovable? The more interesting story would have been an impossible Grayer. How would Nanny handle a kid that was just challenging and unlovable? I saw these horrible kids all the time when I lived in NYC. Was the book's message that all these bratty children need is attention and love? Because I don't buy that. The biggest mistake of all was Nanny's background. While I read the book I just kept thinking: Why doesn't she just quit? Many people I know asked the same thing and also wondered why Nanny didn't quit. Nanny couldn't convince me enough that she had no other choice but to work for Mrs. X. I understand the authors' intent: these people are awful to everyone, not just non-English speaking immigrants/people of color. And they wanted to make it clear that Nanny was educated and had a loving family. But for fiction purposes, Nanny's choice to stay with Mrs X and obey her was questionable. I was also disappointed that we didn't have more of an inside look into the rich lifestyle. There were predictable side stories that were fun, but why whet my appetite only to move on to something else without a satisfying conclusion to the previous delicious side story? An expensive apartment separated by masking tape because the couple is in the midst of a divorce? The authors take us there without giving us our fill of that story. Unfortunately, this happens a lot. Still, there are moments that are laugh-out-loud funny and I think this book is important because it exposes an aspect of life so many of us know nothing about. I just wish it had been edgier!
Rating: Summary: one of the best books of 2002 Review: i cannot say enough good things about this book! it's incrediably entertaining and funny, i read it all in 2 days, as i couldn't put it down. true, this book may not be for everyone, but i strongly recommend it. it would be wonderful to have a sequel to see what Nanny's up to, and if she ever bumps into Mrs X again. i can't wait for the movie!
Rating: Summary: It gets better as you read Review: The book starts as a weak copy of the "Briget Jones Diary" style, but gets better after the first chapter. In the begging it is quite difficult to like Nan, but almost in the middle of the book, she becames a nice, human and interesting character. It is a easy reading, do not expect much.
Rating: Summary: Nanny Diaries! Review: This book was really fun!! I could absolutely not put it down! At first it was assigned to us for English and I was bummed. It looked really " corny". However I picked it up and I fell in love with the characters and the Plot. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANY GENDER ANY AGE!!...
Rating: Summary: Somewhat Funny Review: Wanted more of Mr. and Mrs. X and less of Nanny. Not well-written but amusing none-the-less. Good summer read. Not as funny as NYTimes quote but if you are from NYC or familiar with the scene on the Upper East Side, then the book will have deeper meaning and charm; and if you are looking for a slice-of-life, a very narrow slice of life read then it's worth the price.
Rating: Summary: Worth the read but not one of my best reads Review: After some of the hype surrounding this book I thought I would really enjoy it. I was let down. Aside from being really annoyed that the main character's name was, in fact, Nanny, I thought it started out witty and cute. Very true to life. But I found it very easy to get annoyed with what a doormat this "Nanny" was. The ending left something to be desired. I am not sorry I read it but it was not one of those books I just couldn't put down. I do, however, think it would make a cute movie.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I just loved reading The Nanny Diaries! I couldn't put it down! I would love a sequel to find out how Nan and H.H. are doing :)
Rating: Summary: A fun read Review: I read this on vacation and thought it was a cute story. It was an easy read and a perfect addition to your beach bag. Not deep or compelling-- just a fun read.
