Summary: HORRIBLE
Review: This book wasn't funny, insightful or even vaguely enjoyable. I was hoping for a humorous look into the upper crust world of nannying- instead I got a poorly written, utterly depressing story about a child that is completely neglected by his parents.

ugh.

Summary: The downside of upscale
Review: This novel shows the less publicized type of child neglect -- the over-privileged child with the under attentive parents. Mrs. X peels off 4 year old Grayer with a spatula like move whenever he comes close to her. The only warmth he gets is from his Nanny. She is over-utilized, outrageously taken advantage of, frequently insulted and stuck in the middle of a nasty triangle but she stays with the family because she genuinely cares about the little boy. That's the sad part -- at the same time this book manages to be one of the funniest books I've ever read. This would be perfect to read with the non-fiction book "The Trouble with Perfect : how parents can avoid the overachievement trap and still raise successful children " by Elizabeth Guthrie.

Summary: Mary Poppins doesn't live here anymore
Review: The Nanny Diaries is a window into a world that few of us will ever see: Park Avenue apartment life. When Nanny takes a job with the X family in Manhattan, her entire life changes. Although Nanny ostensibly becomes a part of their family, this book has very few spoonfuls of sugar.

In a funny and satiric look at the New York high life, the authors of The Nanny Diaries have used their own experiences as nannies to create a wonderfully flawed, but real, main character. Nanny (in a very Bridget Jones kind of way) is trying to get an education, find a boyfriend, pay for her meagre life in Manhattan and keep her sanity in the face of a childcare job that is much more than she bargained for.

By taking fun pokes at the attitudes of the rich toward their precious progeny, The Nanny Diaries roasts high society and takes a swipe at old money snobbery.

Wickedly funny and, at times, quite touching. A tremendous accomplishemnt for these first time authors.

Summary: Actually could not put this one down
Review: Absolutely vacillates between being the funniest thing I've ever read to being the saddest - I was howling laughing throughout, yet really crying at the end. Definitely a good read...

Summary: FOR THOSE WHO THOUGHT "NANNIES" HAD ORDINARY JOBS!
Review: The book made for interesting reading and there were parts that were so hilarious, you could read a line and still chuckle about it hours later. For anyone who believes child-rearing is a one-shoe-fits-all process, they ought to read about the trials and tribulations of raising children in New York. In "The Nanny Diaries", readers will meet the wealthy, whizzy-dizzy, Park Avenus mom, Mrs X. She is definitely not your ordinary everyday mom and these are by no means your typical, average nannies. While most readers will find the book highly amusing, if you live or have lived in New York, or any large major city, you are certain to have a better appreciation for the context of the book and a closer affinity to the escapades and experiences mothers, children and these unique nannies encounter. The book is highly entertaining and would make a top-notch movie or television comedy!

Summary: I laughed, I cried......
Review: This book is hysterical! enjoyed it from the very first page on. It also has a really good point to make. This book is a real expose of upper class child rearing in New York. If you ever wondered how private school kids end up dressed in designer clothes, clubbing and using drugs at the age of sixteen, this book gives you the answer: their lives at age four. I loved this book because it showed not only the ridiculous side of Park Avenue life, but another, less talked about, tragic one. As as alumna of one of these schools, I hope it becomes manditory reading for the parents! You'll laugh a lot, but you will put it down thinking.....

Summary: An Amusing and Witty Read
Review: I received this novel as a Birthday Gift from a friend, and am in LOVE. I've While this novel is not my favorite of all time, I would most certainly recommend it to anyone who has a love for a witty, lighthearted, and amusing reads. been reading the Nanny Diaries in concurrence with my assigned reading for my literature class. Perhaps the novel is not as amazing as I proport, but it is certainly a fast and amusing read in contrast with Billy Budd, Demian, or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest....The writers' voices are amusing, intriguing, and genuine, and the plot is full of life's ups and downs, complete with a hunt for panties, sea-sickness, and late night computer crashes that jepordize a term paper. I would strongly recommend this lovely read to any and all in search of inciteful and amusing entertainment. I would also recommend to anyone who has read this novel and enjoyed it, any of the novels by Sarah Dessen =)

Summary: Entertaining and there's truth behind the fiction...
Review: As you the reader will likely know, the authors worked as nannies for years in New York City, so their novel really is "authentic" in its portrayal of the nanny's everyday routines and ups-and-downs. While they say Nanny Diaries is not autobiographical, it's likely they wrote some of their individual personalities and experiences into the character simply known as Nanny.

The story's first several chapters are very funny, and there's a great deal of ridicule, satire and name-dropping to set the tone. The last third of the book is not funny though. Rather, it's sad to read how the parents of Nanny's charge, whom she affectionately nicknames Grover, completely disrespect Nanny's concern and love for Grover's well-being. They do everything imaginable to avoid bonding with their child, and at the same time, criticize and belittle Nanny's competence as a nanny and best friend to him.

The book is more than just a work of fiction. It's also a pointed and (likely) accurate look at a niche of American society that can afford the luxury of private child-care/nannies while they pursue their selfish lives. I've read that Miramax has bought the film rights, and Julia Roberts is reportedly interested in playing Nanny. I'm more than sure this will make a great movie, and Julia Roberts will be the perfect "Nanny" to bring the character to life!
