Rating: Summary: I have never rooted for a serial killer until now. Review: In this thoroughly written thriller, Thomas Harris takes us into the world of two disturbed people. A serial killer and the man coerced into finding him. The passion on both sides makes you look into your own motivations. This one can't be put down. - Buzz F. Wegman
Rating: Summary: Read this book and you'll never feel safe again! Review: In 1981 my college professor recommended this book and guaranteed I wouldn't put it down. He was right. As a peace officer and crime novel addict it's safe to say that when I found out how the villan selects his victims I never felt safe again. Mr. Harris pulls you in on the first page and never lets you go. Harris brings you into the minds of the villan and the hero. The ending rolled me over. Anyone who enjoyed Silence of the Lambs and never knew Mr. Harris wrote this book first will certainly feel short-changed. When I loaned this book to a friend and his wife, his wife locked him out of the house when he took out the trash....after reading these reviews it's time to read it again and pass it on to a "friend." Avoid the movie at all costs and hope that a better production will be made in the future.
Rating: Summary: You'll put deadbolts on your doors. . . Review: I could not put this book down. Interesting weaving of Hannibal Lecter into this case and downright scary. Not for the squemish. The book picks up it's pace toward the end and while the ending is surprising it is also somewhat predictable.
Rating: Summary: An excellent suspense novel that packs a punch!!! Review: I learned of Thomas Harris' Red Dragon curiously enough when James Ellroy, one of my all time favorite noir writers, mentioned it in the introduction to his latest release LA Noir. Ellroy mentioned briefly how Harris' work was not only a great influence on his writting, but in his words "Red Dragon scared the s**t out of me". With such a comment from one of our great noir writers I had to read Red Dragon and see for myself what Ellroy meant. It was a great find. Harris's chilling novel, is about the tracking down of a demented serial killer who preys on families. Harris takes us into the mind of the killer, in much the same way that Jim Thompson took us into the mind of Lou Ford in "The Killer Inside Me", and as Ellroy did with Martin Plunckett in "Killer On The Road". Harris can create the horror, of such a killer in great and powerful detail. Although not as gory as it was billed, I felt that scenes in Ellroy's "The Black Dahlia", and "The Big Nowhere" were much more graphically violent and horrific. Nevertheless, the suspense one feels when reading this book, is a resounding tribute to Harris' talent as an author. Harris to my knowledge has only written three books. This one, and "Black Sunday", and "The Silence of the Lambs". All made into films, as was Red Dragon, under the title "Man Hunter". I would look forward to more books by Harris. And without question recommend Red Dragon, to anyone who enjoys crime, and psychological suspense novels.
Rating: Summary: The most brilliantly-detailed and well crafted book ever!!! Review: Thomas Harris takes you into the heart of so called," obsession" and makes you come face to face with the most terrifying evil that man is capable of...what makes it more shocking is that he enjoys it. Mr. Harris, I am truly your # 1 fan! Please keep them coming...
Rating: Summary: Mr. Harris, are there any....bodies buried under your house? Review: Francis, my my ....MY GOD! As is usual with Harris, we are not merely treated to a bloodbath with nothing behind it. We see the crimes INSIDE the head of Mr. Dolarhyde (the strangely hypnotic evil-doer in this remakable tale), and we can't get out! It is almost as if Harris has some real life experience in the subject matter, eerily able to bring out the horror and the sympathy with neck-snapping jolts from one to the other. You don't sleep, you don't eat, you BECOME Dolarhyde, and you BECOME Graham (the rather murderously inclined detective chasing our buddy Francis), and damned if you can figure out which one to root for! I have never read anything like it, except of course the similarly excellent Silence of the Lambs, and all I can say is "Hey Tom, get off your butt and crank out another, or we might...just....have to HURT you!!" All joking (and threats) aside, Mr. Harris is the undisputed master of the serial killer tale. No one else comes close.
Rating: Summary: Strangely weird, I liked it. Review: Parts of Red Dragon got disgusting, but the detail did add to the story. I liked this book because the antaganist wasn't the ordinary bad guy. Instead, a guy who has found The Dragon, later realizing he doesn't want to be the bad guy. But, if he can't be normal, he must follow through. The ending was good, but a little too predictable. Overall, I enjoyed reading Red Dragon, and would recommend that you do the same.
Rating: Summary: Oh my goodness...this is good! Review: It simply does not get any better than this! While Dr Lecter's pulse rate max'ed out at 85 when he removed the tongue of the medic in the prison medical center, my pulse rate never fell that low while I held this book.
Rating: Summary: Not yet a let down! Review: Although Thomas Harris takes a great period of years to complete his novels, he had yet to dissappoint me. He has only published three novels since '75, but the suspense and explosive plot structure is well worth the wait. I could never figure out why Harris did not write a novel involving the manhunt between Dr. Lecter and Will Graham? That alone would make an outstanding plot for a Harris book. But, alas, we have yet to meet Dr. Lecter set apart from the confines of his maximum security facility (Psycho ward!). I am ashamed that I was never introduced to Dr. Lecter during his violent reign of terror. Oh, well, one can only hope.
Rating: Summary: POSSIBLY THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ Review: I've read this book 5 times and enjoy it every time I've read it. Anyone who has read "Silence of the Lambs" but has not read this Thomas Harris novel should rush out and buy it. I can't wait for his next novel to come out.
