Rating: Summary: After reading this book, I had to sleep with the light on. Review: I've read lots of suspenseful books, but this author knows how to string you along. He kept my heart pumping and kept me guessing throughout the book. This book touched me personally and disturbed me so much that I had to sleep with the light on. Boy, was that fun!
Rating: Summary: Overlooked masterpiece Review: Thomas Harris's "Red Dragon" is, in my opinion, the best of his trilogy of Hannibal Lector. I find Hannibal at his most fearsome in this novel merely because his character is underdeveloped. Hannibal is not yet a famous personality portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins- nor the super-intelligent gentleman he is molded into in "Hannibal." Here, Lector is a dangerous serial killer whom nobody wants to deal with but they have to. In the later novels, he becomes more popular and it is a treat to interview him. When he is despised he is scarier. Kind of like the serial killer in "Dirty Harry" you hate him so much, you actually fear him, but when the villain is entertaining, you don't fear him.But enough about Hannibal, he is a very small part in the book. I think "Red Dragon" is the best also because of the coldness displayed by each character. Graham hates nearly everyone but Crawford-who he begins to dislike, Lounds is an obnoxious weasal, and Dolarhyde is just sickening. The coldness of the killer is present in "Silence of the Lambs", but the main characters seem much more friendly-mind you I'm talking about the book, not the movie. The book takes this coldness between characters, and absorbs it into the plot-making it so much more realistic and that is why I feel that this is the best of the trilogy.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely loved it Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot was fast and engaging from the very beginning, and I couldn't put it down. The battle between the primary characters ranks as one of the best I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: good Review: I think this was a great book, it was full of cliff hangers, and I enjoyed it too much, I couldn't keep waway from it, overall I thought it was eacellent.
Rating: Summary: Not worth reading with the lights off Review: After reading Silence of the Lambs, I had high expectations for Red Dragon which unfortunately were not met. It wasn't as detailed as some of Harris' other books, and Lecters role was pathetically small. The book description gives the impression that Lecter is up to his old tricks, but there were none to be found. Not a total waste, the ending had an awesome twist to it that makes up for the mostly bland plot.
Rating: Summary: Nothing to brag about Review: Before reading "Red Dragon," I read "Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal." I thoroughly enjoyed both of those books and was hoping to find the same suspense in this book. This book lacked suspense and seemed oddly familiar. The storyline was somewhat similiar to that of "Silence of the Lambs," although it was no where near as good. Also, I was hoping that this book would explore the character of Hannibal Lector in more depth, like the book jacket suggests.
Rating: Summary: beautifully plotted and scary Review: Its really worth the detou
Rating: Summary: A unique and original suspense thriller Review: More of Thomas Harris' unique and original prose, and the kind of character insight which he has made his own. All complementing, of course, a fantastic adrenaline-pumping plot with some truly scary forays into the mind of a sadistic killer. I've read "Silence Of The Lambs," "Hannibal" and this, and although the other two are slightly better, that doesn't rob this of any of its well-deserved glory. Some parts of this book are truly beautiful--others will have you putting it down in horror and staggering out of your chair, clutching onto the table for support as your legs go weak at the knees. It's that good. Pure genius.
Rating: Summary: A scary, powerful thriller that sticks with you. Review: For readers expecting a full frontal assault by Hannibal Lecter, skip on ahead to "Silence of the Lambs" and spare us your griping. For those seeking a great read and a penetrating look into the mind of a serial killer and his driven pursuer, this is your book. "Dragon" is a powerful and gripping novel of suspense. For my money, Will Graham is one of the most interesting protagonists in any novel -- he's a mirror image of his archenemy, Lecter, but with a conscience. Harris here demonstrates the mastery of his characters and subject that will serve him well in later books. And it's truly scary -- I thought I knew how it would end, but I didn't. The worst thing I can say about it is that it ends all too fast.
Rating: Summary: Interesting thriller that falls short half-way through Review: I read "Silence of the Lambs" and thought it was a very good book (although I thought the movie gave the suspense and the story a better showing). When I read "Red Dragon", I was disapointed with the story and the ending. I thing Harris was on the right track but his villian was too odd and bizzare for him to be scary. Another thing is that Hannibal is hardly in the book and it almost doesn't make sense why he's in it at all. I'm glad Harris wrote this book first because "Silence..." follows a similiar plot and the character of Hannibal was explored and developed wonderfully. "Red Dragon" just doesn't seem well thought out and the ending is just plain stupid... it just seemed that Harris couldn't figure out what he wanted to happen and it shows. Skip this book and read "Silence of the Lambs".
